We Own the Night : terrible movie. who's with me?

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Hey you stole my thunder but I agree that this movie was very slow and too cliched. The portrayal of the Russian Mafia is too stereotyped they are a bunch bad dudes we know that they are all about power and the money that comes with it we know that. I'm guessing the real Russian Mafia wouldn't have put themselves in such a weak position as was portrayed in the final shoot-em up scene. And unfortunately this movie has no personality no depth. The shoot-em-up scene did have its good moments but I had to wait over an hour to get there. And then there's the final scene at the Police Academy graduation ceremony that was a bit cheesey.
All the main actors put on reasonably good performances given the weak script. However, I'm not a fan of Eva Mendes I find her one dimensional in her roles. She's a hot looking lady but that's it. And that's not enough.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I gave it a "5" for Eva's nipple. If she had been totally nude it would have earned its 7.3 rating.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I didn't find it hard to follow. It was simplistically bad. Joaquin Phoenix looks very drugged thought the film. I know this character was supposed to be high sometimes. But even when the character is supposed to be straight he looks dopey.

Does he have a drug problem?

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I didn't get "drugged" from Joaquin, I got a bit depressed, as he is a man who fate resigns to a life he never wanted or intended. You can see that weight in his performance.

"Why would a banana grab another banana? Those are the kinds of questions I don't want to answer."

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

This was bloody awful.

There are some incredible actors in the film who were playing characters with absolutely no depth to them - was there anything memorable about Bobby's character? I have no idea why an extremely accomplished actor like Joaquin Phoenix would've chosen to play such a lifeless character in a such a stale film. Even when Bobby was 'bad' he wasn't that bad - in fact, he was tame and boring..even the 'criminal underworld' seemed a little tame to me! The 'bad guy' who supposedly cut off people's heads just looked like a skinny, greasy, pony-tailed wimp who was being chased after by a completely unorganised, ramshackle bunch of cops.

As well I just couldn't believe in the supposedly deep bond between the two brothers and all the cops, or the relationship between Bobby and his girlfriend. All the characters were boring and the film had no pace - even the colours and cinematography of the film were dull.

This film had no internal or external resonance for me, did not affect me in anyway apart from giving me an unabashed feeling of relief when it finished.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Couldn't disagree more. I am really not a fan of Marky Mark, Eva (except she's hotter than hell) or Joaquin Phoenix, but I thought this was a really good movie. Not as great as Departed, but still really good.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

this film was a sack of cack.

It has been a very unstable week for me, I found myself sobbing during an episode of Alf on Monday.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

i actually really enjoyed this movie. I thought phoenix was great in it :)

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I liked the film, i liked the characters. I just thought the story was a bit shallow

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Am I with you?

Um naw.

This movie is great. It's a rare film which has a strong plot, strong acting and great script.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Yeah, this movie dragged on and on and on so slowly that all the life was sucked out of it by the director. What a disappointment!

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I really enjoyed it. I was engrossed from start to finish.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Nothing spell-bounding, but I certainly wouldn't call it bad, and it was far from boring in my opinion.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Hey OP. I rewatched this with a friend earlier today and was SEVERELY disappointed. For some odd reason I had it in my head that this was better.

It was super long, super boring, and I got tired of Phoenix and Mendes humping each other after 7 minutes. They're all good actors (except Mendes, she's just pretty) but this movie sucked a big one. I'm glad I only bought the DVD for $5.99.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

After 7 minutes? Their sex scene lasted about 2 minutes from the time he walks in his office until he kisses her goodbye. There is no "humping"

I don't think you watched it, at all.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Uh, yeah. I watched it. I saw it premiere night and I watched it again yesterday, unfortunately. Did you not read my comment?

The only scenes worth mentioning are the hotel argument and chase scenes. I really don't understand how any movie-goer could call this a great movie. It's average at best (and NO, I'm not a brainless action movie kind of girl). This is a real shame. I think the reason why I thought this was better was simply because of the actors.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

nope i enjoyed it ,it had kinda a little slowly pass but its a good thriller

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I thought it was good to,, but some elements wear just a little cheesy. The acting in this movie (along with star presence) is what carried it.

I think Eva Mend's character could be have been done successfully with a unknown actress. She just did not seem a hundred percent fit within the story. Perhaps they had to cut allot of her screen time? Keep the three stars and surround the rest with minor ones.

I found how it was the main antagonist discovered Joaquin's character to be undercover a little cheesy.. Someone forgot to roll up the window??? I think something more clever could have been done.

The ending was done well and left us with the pathos of a tragedy, as Joaquin's character became like his brother, but in the plus it brought them close together.

Help keep "Boogie Nights" off the top 250.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Rolling up the window When the main Russian mob boss Vadim?? is arrested after the cocaine house bust, while waiting in the car (handcuffed) Duvall's character is talking furious about not being informed of his son being undercover and "He is going to haft to go into protection" he hears this because the window is down somewhat. I just thought it was a little cheap that a little mistake like that makes for the next narrative challenge.

The ending I just felt that Joaquin's character becomes more like his brother. Cold, workaholic, and likely to have allot of trouble with his kids when they become teenagers onto young adults as he is always working and not there. While at heart he is a family man. Except Joaquin's character has no relationship outside his brother and during this violent period he lost the one he loved, furthering into a internal sadness. I highly doubt after joining the police force he is going to be at card games and nightclubs like he was at the beginning. That is what I was meaning.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I don't know if I even finished this movie but I remember it being just about offensively derivative and bland. I gave it a 4/10 and I can't believe the IMDB score.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

In my opinion, all who couldn't enjoy this film have some serious issues. Come on people, we're supposed to be appreciating cinema on this site. There is some stuff in this movie that has not been done before or since. Kudos to all involved I say.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Not appreciating cinema, but critiquing it.

I admit I didn't watch all of this movie, but what I did see wasn't too impressive.

Like most people I tuned in because of Phoenix/Wahlberg/Duvall; that's all-star casting right there. These are not just well known actors, but actors most film buffs consider pretty damn good at their jobs, and I can't fault the film for it's acting at all.

My problems with this film were entirely in the writing:

So Whalberg get's shot in the face and his car is firebombed with him lying partially underneath it. I'm thinking, "wow, they just killed off Mark, so this is going to be like a Joaquin revenge thing, ok, I'm feeling that."

But it turns out he wasn't dead. Ok, now I'm thinking, "ok, Joaquin is going to avenge his near mortally wounded brother, good enough"

But he wasn't near mortally wounded. In fact, he suffered no lasting ill-effects (save perhaps PTSD). The first time you see him outside the hospital he has a dot on his cheek. That's it.

So I ask people here to critique cinema, what was the point of the shooting scene? Why was it written the way it was?

Similarly, when Joaquin is at the drug den, panics during the shoot-out and stands up (/facepalm) and then jumps out the window, falls about a floor, and his lower back connects squarely with the top of the fence.

Ok, now I'm thinking we're going to have a parapalegic Joaquin, and lots of drama associated with Mark's anger that Joaquin did what he did to avenge him, and Mark's guilt about what happened to his brother because of it, and Joaqiun's anger about his current condition, and so forth.

But no. Joaquin just has a bit of a limp the next time we see him. So I ask again, what was the point of that last sequence with the window? Why was it written that way?

Then Duvall gets shot, from one moving car to another, in the head, with a shotgun, crawls out of the car in a seemingly unconcious state, has no blood on his face, and dies. How does this move the story forward? What is the point? Do the characters still need this motivation?

By this point I was quickly losing interest in the whole thing.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Yes, the "pros" line was laughable. You don't call someone a pro when they fail misreably.

Russian mob hits typically consist of two guys emptying entire pistol magazines into the face and upper torso of the victim. Sometimes they reload if they are trying to make a point. There is no chance of survival. There is no chance of even an open coffin; quite deliberately. That's how "pros" would have done it.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I don't think it's terrible, just very mediocre.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

yea i wish i could have rewrote it ,lol
i didnt like joaquin turned cop,
i didnt like killing off duvall
didnt like eva leaving him.
the whole second half sucked imo..
the car chase, the corn field chase, etc
and why was there russians running the el caribe/? i thought it was latino

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I agree, this movie was poor at best. I lose a lot of respect for certain actors when they perform in rubbish like this. All about the money I suppose.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

The big-time Russians casually showing an outsider round their drug den
The NYPD drafting a known degenerate into front-line service
The 'black sheep' of the family suddenly becoming the golden boy
The big bad Russian numero uno escaping from the jail, not even explained in convincing detail
Bobby carrying out a ridiculously dangerous undercover operation
The totally random character switches
The ridiculously sloppy escort of the star witness (Bobby) to a safe house

It goes on and on! Cobblers.

Wonderful car chase in the rain, and good cinematography in the cornfield/mist shootout

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I have a gay friend who pisses on every movie that gets great reviews. He just decides to hate everything that is critically acclaimed. But he's got nothing on you guys.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

A total and complete crapfest.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

not a total disappointment, I just think the plot was too predictable, could have used a twist here and there. Juauin's character should have had more conflict within himself and have not been so easy to go on his family's side.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

None of you has a clue what you're talking about. None of you. This is a great film, and you're all too dumb to recognize it.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

NOT ME! I loved it.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I didn't like it as well, only words that I can think of now to describe this move is bland, boring & mediocre.

This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time.
