We Own the Night : terrible movie. who's with me?

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

BemoreOnce again you said what I wanted to. I've had celebrities die at home with family present and we still had to have the family officially identify them.

I think this film is so misunderstood. It's a small film with personal themes that play out logically. It's sad and touching to see a man forsake his life for his family. The dialogue was realistic. Even the father's platitudes were identifiable. The characters were believable. The cinamatography was beautiful.

I did not approach this movie as the next blockbuster, so I wasn't disappointed. It had nothing to compare itself to, even though others were comparing it to The Departed, erroneously in my opinion.

I've watched it several times and have enjoyed it each time. The minor faults, which all films have, are of no consequence.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Incredibly bad. Duvall and the rest of the cast took the paycheck and mailed in the performances. Story made no sense. A precinct vs. the Russian mob. C'mon.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Yeah I was really disappointed, particularly with the script. It was so cliche and felt completely fake.
I also thought it was completely ridiculous that Bobby makes the transition from druggie to cop so easily, I mean would the police department really take someone like him, considering his past?

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Bobby wasn't a druggie. He, like many in that era, used drugs recreationally. Definately not a hard core user. He may never have been arrested before the raid. Obviously he didn't have enough drugs on him to prosecute.

If you seriously think this movie was hard to follow, you shouldn't be allowed near sharp objects.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

true :)

i just don't see where all of these comments are coming from obviously there are many more ppl who liked the movie than those who didn't

it all see like bandwagon jumping to me

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

My boyfriend and I had debated seeing this movie for months. We finally broke down and man am I sorry we did. What an awful movie and I will watch anything. There was zero character development, terrible costumes, and horrible dialogue. I was literally laughing during the entire thing. Joaquin was so lethargic, it was painful to watch. Save yourself the $5 bucks and watch any other mobster movie ever made.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Maybe your expectations were off. This was not a "mobster movie".

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

It was good not great!

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Hard to follow? How was this hard to follow?

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

This movie is total garbage. So unrealistic and corny. I could not believe how bad it was directed. With the actors and scenes that they setup it could have be at least good if not great. It boggles my mind when I see that people actually liked it.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

i totally agree. when i was watching this I feel asleep and woke up and asked my friend why they were still talking. it was nothing but talking and a very predictable movie. Had an amazing cast but poor script.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

There's varied opinions on this film here. I think most people who just see it as a standard cop movie and completely miss it's subtlety and stunning performances are to be frank, morons. It seems if a film doesn't have a bloody murder at regular intervals, say a 'hit' every ten minutes then it's considered dull. That's the trouble with great modern cinema, it's wasted on the soulless masses that go to see it.

Most of the comments in this thread I would put in that category.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Im gonna have to agree and say this movie was sheit

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

You're crazy. Movies do not required a kill or a "hit" in order to be good. This movie was flat out stupid. Watch the parts like the stupid car chase in the rain that was so fake. Duvall was talking on the radio, shooting at the other car, and driving at the same time. What does he have, three arms? When a movie doesn't have me convinced that I'm watching a movie than I think it has bad directing. Yes there were good actors in the movie. But it's like sports, you can win with good players and bad coaching. Watch the end again, when Mark Walhberg gets shot or something happens to him in the cornfield, and the other cop tells Joaquin Phoenix to go in and rush the building instead of him! Joaquin wasn't even supposed to have a gun and now he's a hero? Phoenix was a night club manager. Even when the cops had the place surrounded, they announced it from like 200 feet away. "this is the police". WTF is that? Bad movie. Plain and simple.

You're judging people by saying all we like are kills and hits. Well all you like are big names. Like brand names and such. You're one of those people that like movies like "Home of the Brave" or "Stop Loss".

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Hard to follow how? It's a pretty simple story, as evidenced by people complaining that they've seen similar things done in other movies. yes.gif

Uh, did you watch the movie?

I'd suggest you figure out what actually happened with Wahlberg at the end before your next post, and Phoenix's character was sworn in as a probationary officer for this particular raid, which, actually happens, hell, his character was somewhat based on a real informant and much of the incidents and people had real-life influences. You don't have to love the movie, but in the 'how stupid is this' range, it's really not any worse than most films, no matter how lauded they are.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I just watched this film & thought it was really enjoyable to watch.
Not the best film I've ever seen, but thought it was full of emotion & there were some really suspense filled scenes.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Since I quoted them, I doubt anyone's confused.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Nope, just mildly annoyed to be notified about a reply that had nothing to do with me

Plus, if you don't reply to the right person, then they may never know your response is there, in the first place

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

What, are we still talking about this? Actually, sometimes I hit the reply button to a post and then my response hops down a spot anyway, for example, for my last post I hit reply on your post but it was actually posted two down, not sure why that happens. But in the future it's good advice to not let such incidentals annoy you. Moving on.

Difficult, since it means I have to waste my time checking unnecessary e-mails, but you're right; I guess some people are just inconsiderate

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Dude (yes, 'dude' is justified here) I'm not sure why you just won't leave it alone, don't pick at your scabs, let them heal themselves. I know you've read my posts because you keep responding to me, but you still want to squabble over the fact that my responses are directed to someone else, and I said every time I have so posted, I do hit the reply button, but blame the site, the wacky computer, what have you, sometimes the posts are shown below the wrong person, it happens sometimes, not others. Inconsiderate is not an accurate word to use here, I have to correct you there. But if you receive emails to be alerted to new posts, you must be anxious to read new posts and for that, you're welcome. Now see, that's called turning a frown upside down.

And if you're still barking mad, Howlin' Wolf (I know, I'm on fire!), let me suggest this, you don't hate me, you hate White Power Bill.*

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

No; you definitely hit reply on mine because I got the note! but I'm going to stop there because explaining the rules of cause and effect seems to be difficult

If it was an accident, that's cool; if it was on purpose; I'll cope - but if there was a slight chance to stop it happening again I thought I'd ask you to be more careful where you click next time, OK?

If you use 'nested' mode then you can see clearly who you are replying to. It's nothing to do with where the reply shows up; it's to do with stopping me getting mail saying someone's addressing me when they aren't Take my advice or not, it's up to you.

I receive e-mails when someone hits reply on one of my posts. If you aren't talking to me, then please try not to do that. If you are talking to me, then do it as many times as you like! cool.gif Thanks.

One last thing - is that a Bill Gates reference? (they show Arrested Development in the early hours of the morning here in England, so I haven't caught it yet giveup.gif smile.gif)

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I can assure you that when I was responded to someone else I hit reply to their message, but I've seen it happen before, regardless of whose reply button I hit. I understand you think it's a pain in the ass, but no need for the subtle condescension, I'm not a moron. I hope it doesn't happen again, but I promise I wasn't out to vex you, just as I'm sure your goal wasn't to try to make me out to be someone who's entirely illiterate. Not a big deal either way, as I can see it. So let's unknot our underoos and play nice :)

It was an Arrested Development reference to an inmate known as White Power Bill aka Dirty Ears Bill, when he was being counseled by Tobias: "I hate the Jews.I hate the government.I hate my fatherI hate White Power Bill."

To be clear on that, it was meant to be funny and lighthearted, not an insult.

Cheers!

We'll just have to agree to disagree on the way the IMDB boards system works At least the misunderstanding got us talking, though, so I'm more than happy to "play nice"! smile.gif

Funny/lightheartedness/insults I can take it all!!!

I'll go and do a bit of research on Arrested Development, now. I need to start watching it! You may soon have another fan joining your ranks

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Not to oversell it, but AD may be the funniest show ever made, I think one critic called it a once in the history of time sort of show. If you check it out, I hope you'll like it, everyone that I've introduced to it has become addicted. It's also immensely quotable, as my quote demonstrates. (Alright it makes no sense unless you're acquainted with the Bluth frozen banana business, but still.)

I'm glad we've worked this out, there was never any hostility behind it so far as I can tell, there weren't any claws bared.Howlin' Wolf. I know what you're thinking, 'why isn't this person doing stand-up?'

;)

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Yes, it was very slow and boring, and I actually fell asleep watching it.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Totally agree with you. It's like the director didn't know what movie he wanted to make. All the acting was fine, but the characters were lost in a meandering plot (or what passed for a plot).

After the sex scene in the first minute of the film, I couldn't figure out why Eva Mendes' character was still chewing up screen time. She contributed absolutely nothing. I'm not critizing her acting, just that the character served absolutly no purpose.

The cartoonishly bad scene where Robert Duvall is killed. Would these uber-criminals really choose a drive-by on a moving car in the middle of a rain storm as the best time to make a hit? Why not just wait until you get to the destination? Or at last wait until you're stopped at a light.

The scenes used to move the "plot" along are clunky and forced. It's only the acting talent that kept them from being laughable. It's like Gray used a "direct-by-numbers" template, but still couldn't stay in the lines.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Meh, I liked this film. I liked the story line. Don't give a *beep* much about whether a film is overly realistic. I don't watch films for realism, MOST of them would probably be boring as arse if they were very realistic.

The acting was great. Especially Joaquin. Good times.

- Timothy Dalton should get an Oscar and beat Sean Connery over the head with it!

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I thought the movie was good and very easy to follow.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

LOL too easy to follow! and very dull the whole way through, in fact I was so pis$ed off at the end because I was thinking "this movie is really wasting my time with its cliches, unnecessary language/violence and mundane storyline, it better be building up to something" - then it ended and I'm like "wtf? gimme my 2 hours of life back!"

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Personally I am a pretty big fan of this movie. The acting was great, pretty much across the board with maybe the exception of Joaquin's accent Kinda bad, but other than that I liked it.
Plot was decent, if far fetched. Maybe dragged in places, but I thought it told the story alright.
Yeah, I am sure I liked it.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Probably one of the worst movies of 07 in my humble opinion. I just couldn't believe how they could make such a terrible movie with that cast.

I'm just here to kick azz, sleep till noon. http://longnorthhorn.wordpress.com/

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

100% behind ya.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Hard to follow OR very slow, make up your mind! I think the movie was ok.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

It just got unbelievable when Joaquin was made a cop but told he had go to Police Academy right after this case was closed, I'm sure that frequently happens. Meanwhile here's a rifle and go on a solo hunt in a burning field for the bad guy.

The problem isn't getting enough caviar. The problem is getting enough toast. 'Casino Royale'-Book

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

People always get this wrong, Joaquin didn't go on a "solo hunt," it can't only be my DVD that shows a field full of cops. And he was not issued a weapon, Bobby expressly says that in the film, his brother gives him one of their father's revolvers, it is only when Joe collapses that Bobby takes his riflein the heat of the moment.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

Bemore, Sometimes I think people watch, but don't see. Viewed casually, this is standard fare. If you REALLY watch it, it has a subtly that is sublime. color, texture, character. The story is a simple one presented well. I love it.

What the hell?

Am I surrounded by 13 year old mindless morons here?

The movie was slow? Are you kidding me?

The movie was badly written? Are you kidding me?

The movie was too unbelievable? Are you kidding me?

Either someone made multiple accounts stating the exact same thing to piss me off.

Or I am seriously surrounded by idiots.

I think it is both.

Wow.

Jesus. Wow. This is what happens when you get surrounded by idiots it makes you become dumber. Wow. I just don't know what to say, but wow. I lost 100 points of my I.Q.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I love every actor in this movie, Duvall is a legend, Joaquin is smooth, all have appeared in some classics but this film was utter GASH.

Awful premise. Poor dialogue. terrible direction.

How can you take several high calibre actors and make all of them look pedestrian? The answer put them in this movie.

I turned it off half way through utter bollocks.

You've been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to your life

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I just found the plot hole where they let Joaquin's character, a known drug user and gang-associated felon become a full-fledged cop. I just couldn't believe that.

Re: terrible movie. who's with me?

I am watching it now, and am having a hard time not changing the channel. So glad I didn't sit through this in a theater. There are some slow movies out there, but they kept me interested. I couldn't really put my finger on what was bothering me. I think it was mostly there was this HUGE build up to a resolution in a scene and then the resolution scene was less than 5 mins long. EhI don't know.the editing bothered me too, too many fades to black.
