TalhotBlond : Should be REQUIRED watching for Internet users!
Re: Should be REQUIRED watching for Internet users!
I completely agree with you! I am watching the movie now and just came online to get some background info. As I was reading about it I remembered hearing about the case when it was in the news. Totally crazy story and it shows how out of touch with reality people can get! All parents should get their teens to watch this movie! You gotta be careful out there!
Re: Should be REQUIRED watching for Internet users!
whats Bizzare about this is that he was lying and pretending to be someone else yet it never once crossed his mind she could lying as well!

Because he was an Internet newbie wanting to believe a fantasy. It was better that way. Usually, when you know you are the one guilty of something you don't assume the other is too. You're more focused on yourself and your own deception.

The daughter was 18, otherwise I guess it could be exploitation of a minor or something. So maybe if the daughter didn't want to press charges, there's no case for fraud. Anyway, the lesson here is, always use a secure password. And, um, leash your dog.
Re: Should be REQUIRED watching for Internet users!
Agreed.
The perceived anonymity of the Internet can be a heady thing. It's funny but they were doing could have almost been a Role Playing Game. They were both pretending to be made up people. Yeah, okay, "Katie" was the daughter but it wasn't really her, it was just pictures of her. It wasn't her personality because she had nothing to do with it. She didn't know any of this was going on. "Talhotblond" as she was in the chats was just as made up as "marinesniper," so they were both basically fictional characters.
The difference is, though, that in an actual RPG, all of the players acknowledge this fact. That's the important part, knowing where to draw the line between fantasy and reality.

you can be whoever you want to be on the net.i am a nurse and one of my patients had aids..he had so many sores on his body that no one wanted to have any contact with him, even hospital personal. i told him that he should get on line.he could be himself or anyone he wanted to be on line he said ."no, i sure don't want carpel tunnel syndrome".he died very lonely and i felt like computers would have made him some friendseven if he never saw them.
Re: Should be REQUIRED watching for Internet users!
No, should be required to watch for STUPID internet users. Common sense on any of these rednecks' parts would could have stopped this.

I knew about this case & I was waiting for this movie.
I saw the doc a while back & I was so shocked by the story. I remember telling my husband & son and they were both slack jawed!
My teenage son watched this with me last night- I think it's a very good lesson for young people on the Internet!
I googled it then & read a little about it- that guy was such a complete ass! Sorry but he was- I felt sorry for his wife & daughters.
I honestly believe the woman should've been charged with something! Fraud? Anything. She set that whole thing in motion. The only person telling the truth, the young co-worker was murdered! Pathetic!
Just goes to show ya- You can NOT trust anyone on the Internet! Sheesh!
