NYC Premiere

Re: NYC Premiere

Daily Mail love to show off the worst images of her they can get their hands on, but she looks really quite scary on top 3. The arched eyebrows and makeup combined with that hairstyle and dress She looks like she's auditioning for the Adams Family reboot.

Re: NYC Premiere

I hate that dress, she looks very silly next to the rest of the cast. Oh Nicole.. it is ok to just wear something sensible and enjoy yourself.

Re: NYC Premiere

"I hate that dress, she looks very silly next to the rest of the cast. Oh Nicole.. it is ok to just wear something sensible and enjoy yourself."

My thoughts exactly, Diva! That outfit might look appropriate at the beach (with the dress part detachable for a bikini or swimsuit underneath?) but definitely not for a red carpet premiere. I feel like saying, "Okay, Nicole, what is this with showing more and more of your skin on the red carpets lately and less and less of the dresses??"

Re: NYC Premiere

It is just as awful as her outfit for The Family Fang premiere. It just makes her look desperate for attention rather than glamourous. She still has the potential to totally knock it out of the park, she needs to knock off the, "I'm a rebel and I will wear something impulsive" attitude.

Re: NYC Premiere

I thought she looked nice! She has a really quirky style that she's tapping into now that she's done with the whole 'Hollywood Glamour Queen' phase :)

LAST SEEN: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (7/10) / The Family Fang (10/10) / Special Correspondents (4/10)

Re: NYC Premiere

Well, she has said in regards to her fashion choices, she chooses what pleases her. Obviously, she's not interested in conforming. She does have a "really quirky style" in her films too!

Re: NYC Premiere

I love it personally. She looks like a gotgic Goddess.

Re: NYC Premiere

I agree a Gothic Goddess look. I like that she's embracing darker styles and isn't all about people pleasing and be being boring with her fashion styles.

I've just had another look and stand by what i said. What i divine dress! Some of the photos of Nicole's face aren't that flattering but that's the daily fail for you.

Re: NYC Premiere

She is wearing Rodarte. Isn't it the first time she wears something created by them? I just imagined the premier of The Beguiled with Fanning, Dunst and her wearing Rodarte. Yikes. (Fanning and Dunst are known to be dressed by them quite frequently).

Re: Genius thread

From early reviews Genius's reception from Us critics seem to be divisive, which is a step up from the straight up pans it received in Berlin.

It's still early but I'll be glad if it can maintain a 50% average, by the end.

Re: Genius thread

"studious, beautifully conceptualized and penetrating"
"Its slow and literary with an often dusty whiff of archival Depression Era solemnity that seems jarring in an age of fast-moving movie action. But a sound, perceptive screenplay by John Logan, a set of judiciously understated performances by an all-star cast headed by Colin Firth, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce and Laura Linney and profound direction by Michael Grandage, the British theater sensation fresh from his revolutionary reign as artistic director of Londons Donmar Warehouse, inform and elevate it above and beyond the mundane level of formula filmmaking"

New Clip

Re: New Clip

Kidman has already played a romantic partner to both Law (Cold Mountain) and Firth (The Railway Man), which further mires the film in a zone of prestige-picture blandness, despite the blistering ferocity that the actress brings to the proceedings. Shes a memorable presence, even if she isnt playing a character so much as an unsubtle dramatic device, the cruel teller of inconvenient truths. There are things to appreciate about Genius and its belief in the necessity of good editing, but when Kidman utters a line like Human beings arent fiction!, you may feel like pulling out a red pen of your own.

LA Times

Re: New Clip

That dialogue (clip) is cringe-worthy.

I think Kidman should stay away from all of scripts on the so called black list like Stoker, Grace of Monaco, Genius. It's almost a sure sign of a disappointment.

Re: New Clip

Thanks lemon, I really loved the clip, Kidman is luminous.

First BO numbers

Genius (RSA), 16 theaters / $26k Fri. / 3-day cume: $86k/Wk 1

http://deadline.com/2016/06/warcraft-conjuring-2-now-you-see-me-2-weekend-box-office-1201770307/

Love & Friendship grossed $133,513 in its first weekend in 4 theatersb68. It's also true that it had the favour of the critic.

Re: First BO numbers

that's very weak, she needs to do something commercial, she can't continue making films that nobody watches, but to be fair this isnt her film its Colin Firth and Jude Law's.

Hopefully HBO's BLL will change that.

Yep, wasn't she on set just for a week?

Re: Genius thread

Lionsgate and Roadside opened Genius with Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Laura Linney in 16 theaters, averaging $6,580

Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions Genius opened at a slower pa1c84ce, perhaps not catching the alternative-programming wave many Specialties try to position in summer. Genius grossed over $105K in 16 theaters, averaging $6,580, the best PTA of the weekends group of limited release narrative newcomers. This is for an upscale, older audience thats interested in great books and great writers, said Roadside co-president Howard Cohen earlier this week about the title. For this, its a hybrid similar to what we did with The Skeleton Twins. Roadside opened that film starring Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader and Luke Wilson in 15 theaters in September 2014, averaging $25,379 its opening weekend, eventually grossing over $5.28 million. Genius will head to the top 50 markets June 17.

Re: Genius thread

BoxOfficeMojo reports a $470 PTA and a total gross of $6,500. My God, if those numbers are true.

Re: Genius thread

Must be a mistake, we have a statement directly from RRA claiming it grossed 105 k.

Re: Genius thread

Lol, a movie starring the box office poison brigade will bomb, but not that badly.

My 2 Cents

Finally watched the movie last night. There were 2 other people in an otherwise mostly empty movie theater.

Pros:
-The movie itself is a rather fascinating study of some of the personalities and interesting process behind early 20th centurys great writing.
-I really liked the vintage touch the cinematography rendered. The retro/sepia effect added to the quality of the film.
-Scenes where Max Perkins reads/Wolfe narrates the poetic lines from the novels. Just so tender. Beautifully scripted & shot.
-Laura Linney's on-screen charm

Cons:
-Jude Law's exuberant, in-your-face portrayal. It was just a pain to watch.
-Colin Firth's typical Colin Firthesque restrain.
-The Wolfe-Bernstein story was hurried & superfluous. I was not invested into that plot or her character at all.

This movie had SUCH great potential. Some scenes are just so masterfully shot. Unfortunately I fail to look past its faults.

Re: Genius thread

It's earned $442K as of June 20 and is #98 in Rotten Tomatoes top 100 films of 2016. Unfortunately, Genius has a 45% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

On the other hand, Family Fang is #64 in Rotten Tomatoes top 100 films of 2016 with a 79% fresh rating.

Re: Genius thread

It's out on DVD end of August, people can start watching it online

Re: Genius thread

Well, at least it earned a million at the BO. The Family Fang barely earned thousands. $15,285.

VOD

Genius is available online.

Re: VOD

Who could possibly finish this one?

I'll probably remember it as the most boring film Nicole Kidman's ever made. And don't even get me started on her character.

Re: VOD

The same could be said for Strangerland, The Family Fang and Queen of the Desert. Good lord, her recent output has been dull to say the least.

Re: VOD

There's still no Australian release date for Genius yet. I'm still intrigued to see it..

LAST SEEN: Love & Friendship (8/10) / Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (7/10) / The Family Fang (10/10)

Re: VOD

Dont be. It's cliched, by the book, and anemic. A truly pathetic attempt at an awards-type film from everyone involved (except maybe Linney). And Kidman's character is a clumsy, melodramatic plot device at best.

Re: VOD

I 238would say as a Kidman fan you should watch it but it's not something you need to see right away. It's very by the numbers but still there's some redeeming qualities - the costumes, photography, and Laura Linney sharing the screen with Nicole. What I found most fascinating is that Aline is both completely unlikeable but completely right about the situation she's in. I feel the final scene vindicates her character. So from that point of view it's worth the watch.

That is so Haven!

Re: VOD

Lets hope Lion doesnt follow that trend. To me, it looks like it easily might.

Re: VOD

I know, right? I know Nicole is friends with people involved with this project and she was about to do Photograph 51 with Grandage, that's probably why she did this, but it made me so sad to see her playing a character this shallow and ridiculous. I hated almost everything about this movie. Colin Firth's hat, Jude Law's accent, Laura Linney's lack of screentime, the film's 90s Miramaxness I seriously recommend my fellow Nicole fans not to see this. She's barely in it anyway.

Re: VOD

And when she is yo just feel sorry for her.

Miramaxness is a great term, although a bit of an insult. To Miramax.

Re: VOD

Jude Law was just outrageously awful! He has never been much of an actor, in my opinion, or at least, a very narrow set of skills. Oh Nicole, I am trying to be hopeful for BGL, and such. At any rate Michael Grandage should not be the director for the film adaptation of Photograph 51! Absolutely not!

Re: VOD

Photograph 51 shouldnt be made into a movie, period. Unless maybe as a BBC drama.

Nobody would pay to watch it with Angelina Jolie, let alone Kidman.

Re: VOD

I absolutely agree. It should NOT be made into a movie. Why mar a perfectly good piece of theater?

Re: VOD

Nicole is my favourite so i do really want to see this. I have found some of other films over the years that others have slated i have enjoyed.

I notice i can buy an import of it on amazon. As well as Queen Of The Desert. I am wondering if it is worth it? I had The Family Fang on my list too. Almost ordered it but i have noticed i can now get an official UK release which is out February 6th so i will wait for that one.

I have been patiently waiting to see this for ages it seems. I don't care for watching them on the internet.

Re: VOD

Don't expect much from Genius. It makes a 3rd class Kidman films like The Human Stain look a like masterclass. She was really scraping the bottom of the barrel with that script. A

It's one of the three Kidman films I couldn't even finish (the other ones being Happy Feet and Secret in their Eyes).

Re: VOD

Yeah, do yourself a favour and avoid Genius/Queen of the Desert/Family Fang. You'll be happier for not having seen them. Just wait until Lion to redeem faith that Nicole can appear in a genuinely good film and excel while doing it.

Re: VOD

It's 84% fresh on RT now with 85 reviews. It's really holding up well.

I just wish the movie didn't have that one long monologue of hers. It was so blatantly Oscar baity and made the character seem weird with the whole 'vision' thing.

Re: VOD

Haha yes. I mean, it's apparently true but the way she was directed to deliver it did feel like obvious Oscar bait. I doubt Sue Brierely ever slipped into an intense monologue like that with her son. I still enjoyed it for what it was.
