EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate has kicked off Cannes by acquiring the US rights to Genius, the Michael Grandage-directed film that stars Colin Firth, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Laura Linney, Guy Pearce and Dominic West. The U.S. deal was just shy of $4 million. It was completed yesterday after buyers, including Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, were shown the film for the first time late last week by CAA, which brokered the deal for the Oscar-bait film.
Grandage, the Tony-winning director whose stage credits include Frost/Nixon, directed John Logans adaptation of the A. Scott Berg book Max Perkins: Editor of a Genius. Genius tells the story of a life changing friendship that developed between literary lion Thomas Wolfe (Law) and Perkins (Firth), the respected literary editor. The film was produced by James Bierman, Grandage and Logan. Deepak Nayar, Nik Bower, James J. Bagley, Berg, Tim Bevan, Steve Christian, Ivan Dunleavy and Arielle Tepper Madover are the exec producers. The financing came from Riverstone Pictures and Pinewood Pictures. Lionsgates Jason Constantine and Eda Kowan are overseeing the project, and FilmNation is handling international.
Re: Hollywood reporter say Genius generating major interest
Woah that was fast that sizzle reel must have been a killer, 4 million is pretty good number for a small film like genius so there must have been a bidding war.
well look like its going to be a busy September for Kidman, with her play and films premiering back to back.

Great. They also have Freeheld, the LGTB drama lead by Julianne Moore and Ellen Page. Almost all distibutors have their plates full, so it's good news Lionsgate bought it, I gu111cess.

Grandage will meet up with his leading lady in New York next weekend to discuss aspects of the play and talk about Genius, the film he directed in which Kidman appears alongside Colin Firth, Jude Law, Laura Linney and Dominic West.
Grandage will also stop off in Los Angeles to participate in distribution meetings about Genius, his film directorial debut, with the Lionsgate studio.
Early rehearsals for Photograph 51 will take place in July, but the bulk will be in August.
Re: Genius thread
TIFF announced their second lineup, and Genius was not one of the films mentioned, obviously Grandage has moved on to the theater, so the film should have wrapped a while back, Lionsgate have picked it up but they've done no promotion so far perhaps they're planning on launching the promo/marketing in September, regardless the film's prospects are not looking very good.

Re: Genius thread
There is still a chance that Genius will show up in award season. Some films like Wolf of Wall Street and American Sniper had a December release and they did not do TIFF, CANNES or New York festivals and it still received nominations.
Just hope that this is Grandage and Lionsgate strategy ( Not to show it too early)
Therefore, less time for the competitors to find fault with it.

Re: Genius thread
It could be smart, as long as they don't hold back too much and the film fall completely under the radar like "The Painted Veil" did a few years ago.

I love love The Painted Veil, such a shame that movie never got any attention, it's so beautiful and romantic!

I don't think it was all that great if I'm honest, but it was perfect Oscar bait and the score was one of the greatest ever!

Its called Genius, and it stars Colin Firth, Jude Law and Nicole Kidman. Due for release just before Christmas (and award season), the film, touted as the bio-pic of the year, is about a book editor. Yup. You read that correctly. An editor.

Grandage gives some info on Genius
Lionsgate is deciding its release schedule. Does Grandage think his stellar cast might pick up more gongs with it? Its a very delicate little film about a massive subject, but certainly the performances here are as good as ones these actors have won awards for.

Although he does have the Donald Crowhurst film next year with Rachel Weisz, from the director of The Theory of Everything. I'd be willing to bet that'll get him his next Oscar nomination.

Re: Genius thread
Too bad Colin is playing an editor for Genius and that's considered too mundane or boring for the film to succeed. On the other hand, Jennifer Lawrence is picked to win her second Oscar for playing, guess what, the inventor of a new type of mop. And I'm 100% sure she will get the Oscar nom for it, if not the Oscar ("Why don't they just give her the Oscar now?" one reviewer wrote)

So far [Grandage] is still motoring, and in several directions at once. He has directed and produced his first film, Genius, about the literary editor Max Perkins, which co-incidentally brought him together with Kidman. It also stars Colin Firth and Jude Law and will likely be released early next year. It was a very scary transition because I had no idea what to do, he says. I can't believe what that film did to me. It's like all my nerve endings came up and I felt alive in a way I hadn't for years.
Sundance/Berlin then?..
Re: Genius thread
I think it may be wise to hold off until next year since there are already SO many British films that have huge hype this fall. Between "Brooklyn", "Carol", "Suffragette" and "The Danish Girl" (sigh) this could end up going completely under the radar as it has had almost no promotion thus far!

Deadline Interview with Grandage
http://deadline.com/2015/09/deadline-q-and-a-michael-grandage-james-bierman-on-nicole-kidman-photograph-51-1201526695/
DEADLINE: Whats the latest on Genius, which you shot last year? What was your attraction to the story, and will we see it?
GRANDAGE: When I read John Logans script for Genius Id never read anything that had spoken so clearly to me about what I do. The story of Max Perkins [the book editor at Scribners who first published Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fizgerald and Thomas Wolfe] is the story of directing. He had to take this extraordinary raw talent and open himself up to these writers to gain their trust and help them deliver their very best. Its an absolute direct correlation to what I do. Through Max there was a way of talking about a whole creative process, and about any relationship with artists.
BIERMAN: Were looking to release the film next year. Itll be probably in the second quarter. I think were looking to do some early festivals and then roll to a July release in the U.S

They should have faith in the film if they thinking a July release, or at least i hope so
Re: Deadline Interview with Grandage
I think so. I'm sure that the only reasons it's being held back are a) Grandage is busy with "Photograph 51" and b) There are too many British films slated for this year for this film to make a big splash.

Berlin Film Festival Possibility
http://variety.com/2015/film/news/berlin-festival-lineup-scorsese-1201658688/
Elsa Keslassy at Variety predicts the film will make its World Premiere at Berlin Film Festival, which previously have showed Kidman's The Hours and Queen of the Desert. As the film is ready and the producers wish for a festival run in the spring, I could see this happening. It's one of the most high-profile festivals that time of year, save for Sundance, which the film skipped.

Also, if the film premieres at Berlin, I think she will be too busy filming Big Little Lies* for her to attend.

"New movies starring Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst will compete for the top honours at this year's Berlin International Film Festival with offerings from Iran, Tunisia the Philippines and elsewhere, with Meryl Streep presiding over the jury that will choose the winners.
Eighteen movies are in contention for the Golden Bear prize at the first of the year's major European film festivals. In its 66th edition this year, it runs Feb. 11-21. The typically diverse program was presented by organizers Tuesday.
Theater director Michael Grandage's movie debut Genius stars Firth, Kidman and Jude Law in a look at Max Perkins' time as book editor at Scribner, overseeing work by Thomas Wolfe and Ernest Hemingway among others."

My expectations for this film is very low,
I mean for lionsgate to champion the awful freeheld flop over Genius, there has to be some rationale behind that.
Apparently Kidman is said to be attending the Premiere, it's Grandage's first film so

Re: Genius thread
Oh yea i remember now the film was finished, ready for release last year, but they shelved it till now & yea premiering it in Berlin doesn't really mean anything specially after what went through with "QOTD"
Re: Genius thread
Michael Grandage apparently knows a good script as there must have been a fairly good one for Photograph 51. QOTD did not have either a coherent plot or a good script, according to critics. As far as Freeheld, wasn't that with Julianne Moore? If so, Moore was coming off an Oscar win so there was lots of confidence in her performance and that's probably why Freeheld was preferred over Genius. Also, Jude Law and Colin Firth are not the big stars they used to be.
I'm glad Nicole has a supporting rolewhatever the outcome, she most likely won't have all the blame if reviews are "mixed". I don't expect the film to be a box office draw thoughseems like the subject matter would be a little dry for most theatergoers taste.

Grandage hopes the film will illuminate a significant collaboration that often goes overlooked by readers of classics and beach best-sellers. Does anybody ever read a book these days and consider that behind the book, there might have been a rather mighty collaboration to get that to the page? he asks. I just love the idea that people will watch the film and actually maybe rethink the way they read a book.
