Easy Rider : Why did the commune people reject the Dennis Hopper character?
Re: Why did the commune people reject the Dennis Hopper character?
It's been a while since I've seen Easy Rider but I seem to remember some coolness going both ways from the start. The commune leader, under stress from the lean times the group was going through, felt that Hopper's character (not a personable guy anyway) was a threat to his authority, would not play by his "rules", and would openly question the viability of his commune.

Thanks.makes sense
Re: Why did the commune people reject the Dennis Hopper character?
Hopper was a drunken, drugged up, hyper, type-A personality, who wouldn't sit down, shut up, chill out, or take no for an answer.
So was his character . . .
You Fill Me with Inertia.

The stranger on the highway pretty much brushed him off constantly, pretty rudely, but Jack Nicholson's character interacted with him more than Fonda.
Re: Why did the commune people reject the Dennis Hopper character?
Poor Billy wasn't really accepted by anyone except Wyatt and George. The commune hated him, the motel clerk hated him, the men in the caf hated him, the girls in the caf didn't even know he existed while Wyatt was with him and even the prostitute couldn't hide her disgust for him and she was being paid.
Re: Why did the commune people reject the Dennis Hopper character?
Wyatt and Billy were technically on the same journey, but they were actually searching for different things. Billy was worried about the money being the key to his dreams, and Wyatt was more in search of something less tangible. You see this almost every time they stop, with how he reacts to people vs. how Billy reacts.
Re: Why did the commune people reject the Dennis Hopper character?
Because Billy laughed at their crops.
Re: Why did the commune people reject the Dennis Hopper character?
It was a combination of the commune and its ideals failing and jealousy of sharing the women.
Why did the commune people reject the Dennis Hopper character?
But it was clear he was not welcome.
