I heard about this movie years ago and did a bit of research into from what I could find online. I always felt that the masked killer with his featureless face and black slouch hat and coat looked like The Blank, a Dick Tracy villain from the late 1930s who used early latex makeup to make himself appear to literally have no face. The similarity of appearance was such that I wrote a Wold Newton article forming a distant connection between the two killers.
Most recently, I finally got to see "Blood and Black Lace" on DVD thanks to Netflix. Part of the features was an audio commentary by Bava expert Tim Lucas, during which he notes the dead-ringer similarity with the Blank as well. Awesome!
