Birth : Vibrate sound

Vibrate sound

There's 2 scenes in this movie, back to back, where it sounds like there's a phone or pager that's set to vibrate. I made sure it wasn't in my home, I paused in the middle of the noise twice. Does anyone remember this, and/or know its significance?

Re: Vibrate sound

Spooky/supernatural soundtrack to make up for a weak script?

Re: Vibrate sound

Yes! I do remember it. But I thought it was my brother's phone in the next room. Strange that it was actually in the film, I wonder if it was supposed to be.

Re: Vibrate sound

I guess it means she was so involved with the kid and that particular moment that she doesn't even notice her cell phone vibrating

She might have fooled me, but she didn't fool my mother.

I absolutely heard it, but thought it was a problem with the dvd!!!

Re: Vibrate sound

lol watching for the first time and I checked my phone just now. I thought maybe I set my phone down and had it on vibrate.

Re: Vibrate sound

I just watched and I did the same thing. Then I thought there was a phone ringing in the movie. So I waited. Nothing. I think that was just the background music they thought would be brooding.

Re: Vibrate sound

I'm watching it on IFC right now, I have the DVD but haven't watched it in forever , and when the sound played I literally tore my room apart looking for a phone because I didn't remember that sound being on the soundtrack! It creeped me the hell out. lol

Re: Vibrate sound

In which scenes do you hear the vibrating?

Re: Vibrate sound

It's very noticeable in the scene immediately following the string quartet playing at the party. Clifford has arrived late, and confronts Anna in the dimly lit kitchen as he tells her that the boy is not Sean. We hear a phone vibrate repeatedly.

It's an interesting, subtle and eerie use of sound because we don't see the cell phone anywhere, and no one says "Hey, are you gonna answer that?". I think the implication is that it's either Anna's fiancee trying to reach her or Sean's mother calling, but whoever it is doesn't matter: by this point Anna is utterly convinced the boy is Sean, her husband. She is now rejecting everything that might be to the contrary a phone ringing/vibrating with another potential naysayer, Clifford's plea that the boy is NOT Sean, even the threat of an arrest. She has tuned out.

I love the haunting yet melodic score, the sound and the other FX throughout this film. It's mesmerizing without being melodramatic or whimsical.

Re: Vibrate sound

Yea, I noticed the sound throughout the movie and paused it as well even though I don't even own a cell phone and nobody else I live with has one either. It kind of gave me a headache.

Re: Vibrate sound

Heheheh.. I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I watched it on my laptop and paused the film a few times because I thought my DVD drive was acting up.

Re: Vibrate sound

THANK YOU. I came to this site just because I found the noise so annoying.

Re: Vibrate sound

I'm SO confused because I've seen this movie a few times and didn't notice this noise until now? It happens in the part where she puts Sean to bed, and where Anne Heche's character brings the Sean kid into the bathroom. Huh?

Re: Vibrate sound

I think I finally heard the so-called vibrator noise. It has to be part of the soundtrack. It is too subtle to be anyone's phone. Especially since there are different characters involved in these scenes

Still, I don't have the best sound system on my television.

C'mon, Oscar! Let's you and me get drunk!

Re: Vibrate sound

Oh my God! It's sooooooooooooo obvious it's a cellphone vibrating from someone of the movie crew.

Re: Vibrate sound

The vibrating sound is also there on the official soundtrack. Therefore Glazer purposefully kept it there last, it's very creepy.

Re: Vibrate sound

lol everyone, it's definitely music. It's a synthesizer playing a few really low notes. I thought it was kinda groovy actually :). Although I must admit I also thought it was a phone for a moment in one scene

Re: Vibrate sound

I thought it was an incredibly effective use of sound. It gives the ominous feeling of a call being madebut where from? From beyond? It's very eerie, and ties in nicely with the theme of the film. I also paused the movie to see if the noise was coming from elsewhere.

"Just forget you ever saw it. It's better that way."

Re: Vibrate sound

I wondered about that too.

Re: Vibrate sound

The sound is actually a really low electronic bass note, which is part of the soundtrack. Ideally your meant to be listening to this with a good soundsystem - one with a subwoofer at least so it can accurately output the lower frequencys. If you are listening to it on a tv it distorts these lower frequencys into a vibration because the speakers can't handle it. So, I don't think it is deliberately supposed to sound like a phone vibrating. I'm sure if you saw this in the cinema you wouldn't confuse the sound for a phone.
