perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

Better Call Saul - Season 6 (AMC, 2022)

Starring: Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, Jonathan Banks, Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando, Giancarlo Esposito, Tony Dalton
Grade: A+

Favourite Episode: Saul Gone

Series Grade: A+

a terrific final season that affirms once and for all that Better Call Saul is a series about the fundamental choices we make and their consequences, intended, unintended, anticipated, and unimaginable. these choices, and the ensuing decisions we make in their wake, shape us, but we can control that direction.

i have so much i could say about this incredible season of television - the masterful direction, the way every character got the perfect ending for their story, the beautiful study of the relationship between Jimmy and Kim and of themselves independently - but i'd struggle to put it all into words.

this is the perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga. even if i had a time machine, there isn't a thing i'd change about it.

suck it.

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

one of the best things about the BCS finale was pointing out - in Walt's final scene ever, no less - that Walt always was, and always would've been an unlikeable, condescending asshole that pushes away anyone he sees as "weak" or "lesser" in whatever capacity regardless of whether or not he'd stayed with Grey Matter - which even in the end, he still blamed Gretchen and Elliott for, even though we know for a fact he left of his own volition bc he felt outclassed by Gretchen's wealthy family. a true "temporarily embarassed millionaire" in the ironic American tradition. the argument i always saw made by toxic Breaking Bad fans was that Walt was a victim of circumstance and nurture, that if he had just had the world handed to him on a silver platter he wouldn't have cooked meth and murdered people in the double digits, or treated his wife like absolute garbage, and that final 'Granite State'-adjacent scene of Jimmy and Walt in Ed's hideout felt like a very direct response to that. like a final statement.

suck it.

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

also, i LOVE the contrast of Mike and Walt's responses to the time machine question - Mike offers Jimmy a genuine, camaraderie-filled moment of vulnerability, and Walt literally vomits the question back at Jimmy, repulsed at the notion he may have to examine his own motivations and actions / the subsequent effect they've had on his loved ones.

suck it.

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

I liked that Mike's answer, which originally was going to be fixing a tragedy (his son's death), was instead one introspective of his own failings (taking his first bribe) and the example he led, which resulted in his son being killed. It really shows the dichotomy in humanity between Mike and Walt, whose answer was still money-related and nothing to do with his personal failings. Mike always acknowledged his own moral corruption.

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

yup, exactly. even bringing Marie back felt like it was driving this point home even further. showing Steve's widow as well, to illustrate the extent of the damage Walt did to the lives of those around him.

suck it.

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

This Mike scene is one of the most beautifully emotive pieces of art ever

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

Other than Sophie and Orson, literally no one else on these boards have decent anyway, so that's hardly saying much.

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

don't forget Corwin.

of course!

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

Something I also thought was worth mentioning. How nice is it having a show finish on a final note that's not cynical or subversive? Finding optimism in ugliness, quite literally finding colour in the drab world of the last few episodes, is often undeservedly viewed as corny, while dark endings are held up as mature. In no way does the ending cheaply absolve Jimmy or Kim of their actions, not even morally, but it searches for the innate goodness in them to do right, despite Jimmy's potential, as Chuck said, to take shortcuts as he always does by accepting a plea deal for a shorter sentence, and it concludes you can be whoever you want yourself to be, that you're not defined by your past irrespective of your mistakes. Given the circumstances, it's the happiest ending the show could have had because Jimmy's confession goes against what everyone thought of him and he's able to find peace with Kim.

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

very true. i've been a fan of Kim since episode 1 and i'm glad that this hasn't changed throughout the series' run. when Kim announced she was gonna leave Jimmy bc… it broke my heart but i understood.

suck it.

very true, sis. 100% nailed it in a wonderfully crafted review. amazing post. i love u

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

Vince Gilligan says that they're not finished yet. What will the next show be?

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

i am not sure. have u seen this Breaking Bad sequel movie? i haven't but i will probably some time next week. i know it's about what happens to Jesse after Walt's death, right? so idk… i agree with u and hungry that a Lalo prequel would be nice that is about the cartel and how the Salamancas rose up in that business n became this drug lord family. i'd watch that. i loved the first 2 seasons of Narcos btw. drug lord/cartel show i would watch.

i heard Gilligan is planning on doing a new show but that is not in the BrBa universe. it's gonna be more like X-Files n Twilight Zone…? hmmm

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

The first two seasons of Narcos were very good. The dude that played Pablo is a phenomenal actor - reminded me of Gandolfini with the subtle mannerisms and way he could turn on the charm and then be a psychopath at the flick of a switch.

I watched the new Narcos, but gave up. It was wildly mediocre.

I didn't really like the Jesse movie at first, but I watched it again and enjoyed it a lot. It's quite grim, but I won't say more at the risk of spoiling it

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

yes!! Wagner Moura (i think?) was amazing. i think the show would have been half as interesting without that performance. totally agree with u. the new season was alright, i thought, but it was a totally different show for me without Escobar/Moura… so i watched the whole thing and while mediocre, i didnt feel like i wasted my time. that it focussed more on a female character, this widow of one drug lord who got killed and her child struggling to survive in that hostile milieu kept my interest enough.

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

I'm sure I've told you a million times, but you need to watch Gomorrah, Romanzo Criminale and ZeroZeroZero - all Stefano Sollima shows and 10/10

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

i do yeah. i'll put it on my watchlist. i still have to finish Justified. i'm in the 5th season currently and moving forward slowly. but i love this show. then i'll start The Shield which i also havent seen yet beyond the first season and then i'll probably do Gomorrah..

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

The finale is damn good: Goggins and Olyphant are two of my favourite actors.

They're making a new show fyi

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

yes, Olyphant has always been a fav too, but i'm new to Goggins and i'm gonna watch The Shield after this mostly bc of him.

heard about the new Justified show!! very nice.

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

The Shield is just about up there with BB, The Wire, sopranos etc

Pretty bleak show

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

Can someone answer these questions 4 me?

How did Jimmy talk them down from 30 years to 7? with the promise of dirt on Kim? This turned out to be a ploy to get her in the courtroom that day I know, but how did he manage to talk them down 22 years without first revealing that " dirt " on kim?

one of his charges were knowing about the deaths of 2 feds, He seemed to be wanted for this BEFORE he was caught in the dumpster so how did they KNOW that he spent some time with Walt after Hank and Gomies death? It seems like the kinda thing he could just deny and there would be no evidence that he knew after the fact?

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

The lawyer had a 100% conviction rate and knew Jimmy could sway the jury

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

also, where the fuck did those diamonds come from? They were shown in episode 1 of season 1 IIR but I dont recall them being a thing in BrBa or even in BCS? did i miss something? lol

I tried to start watching the series again. It just doesn't appeal to me like it used to. Sorry. Maybe there is something else that we could watch together?

Donna you aren't smart enough for this, love. Go stare at a wall or something

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

And I really do love Sophie so if you think that is crazy then something is wrong with you.

Lol did she really make ballzy so scared that he put on his world of Warcraft wizard costume and hid under his bed for a week?

Re: perfect, deeply human conclusion to a 14 year saga

I’m pretty sure there’s some truth to that.

She threatened to kill him.

But Balls was relentless. Even I.. felt sorry for her.

Lulz not really. But yeah.
