Star Trek V: The Final Frontier : now tell me, who or what is god?

now tell me, who or what is god?

I just don't get it, after the hundred views. I just don't get around the plot with god.

Is god a hologram, a trick made up by the Klingons?
To lure the Enterprise (Kirk) to a barren planet and finally kill him?

In the end the Klingons seem to help Kirk. Was this due Spock's doing to convince the klingons for help? Maybe part of a subplot was missing?

In the movie god is a entity imprisoned on this barren planet for a long time, trying to escape he is in need for a starship.
So god is not actually that face we see, god must be a person or something alien.

What is the connection between Sybok and the alien god?

Does Sybok actually exist or is he a offspring from that entity which disguised himself as god?

Why does the evil entity suddenly manage to lure Kirk and crew to a barren planet at this point in time? why does this all happen now and not at a different moment in time? Why does Sybok show up at this moment?

Re: now tell me, who or what is god?

Wow. Really? All that?

You realize one could make up a billion questions about anything for any movie in existance, right?
If is it not explained in the movie, then it is not explained in the movie.

The answers:
1. who knows, probably not, wasn't explained in the plot.
2. who knows, probably not, wasn't explained in the plot.
3. who knows, maybe, wasn't explained in the plot.
4. who knows, wasn't explained in the plot.
5. who knows, wasn't explained in the plot.
6. who knows, wasn't explained in the plot.
7. who knows, wasn't explained in the plot.

Here's a few more:

why are vulcan ears pointed?
why does the enterprise have two engines and not 3 or 4?
does the transporter disintegrate people and recreate them from local matter?
does McCoy get laid?
white is the Enterprise white?
what is the back story of that dancer? I NEED TO KNOW!
did uncredited JJ Abrams help write this?
how did that guy at the front even live? Eating dirt?
how many nutrients are in that dirt?
what was the name of all the nearby planets within a million mile radias?
what did the drinks in the bar taste like?
what was the point of having water on the pool table?

It was a good response for a 100% dumbass OP.

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

Re: now tell me, who or what is god?

I think in the novels this God was an evil Q inprisoned by other Qs. Those weird paranormal characters from NEXT GENERATION and VOYAGER. The God was originally Satan, then an alien pretending to be God, but the movie doesn't explain much.

Sybok probably trained himself with his feelings and magically healing others and I guess was the only one this God imposter to contact, and because Sybok believed in religion so much, the evil Q used it for his advantage.

Re: now tell me, who or what is god?

The novelization of the movie does not say that. At the end, they are contemplating the existence of God, and Spock states that some being somewhere was responsible for building the barrier to trap the god/demon in.

"Oh no...they sent the wrong Spock!"

Didn't say anything about the film's novelization.

Re: now tell me, who or what is god?

Since GOD is not a separate entity, Sybok created his own GOD, which was only a aspect of his own 'notion' of the Supreme Being, which was born out of his attitudes and beliefs. He mentioned something near the end, about his arrogance and that is why he joined with the entity, to save the others. The 'God' being wanted the starship, as that is what Sybok wanted, in order for him to attain his quest. Sybok and the 'God' entity were 'one', which is what the point of GOD is. If Spock or Kirk, had the notion to search for GOD, then it would have been a different experience, depending on their own notion of 'God'. That is my take on it, anyway.

Re: now tell me, who or what is god?

I always thought it was a reference back to the old Star Trek episode about the barrier and the two people getting god like powers. It was someone transformed like they were.

Re: now tell me, who or what is god?

A figment of a lot of people's imagination.

Re: now tell me, who or what is god?

I always thought that the god-creature was actually a Thasian...

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Thasian

He seemed to have all the powers and abilities that a Thasian would have. Perhaps he was marooned there by the other Thasians because he was destructive.

Re: now tell me, who or what is god?

It's always confused me too. My take on it, and I'm probably talking utter claptrap, is that Sybok has somehow gained the ability to project emotions into solid matter, albeit temporarily. How else is he able to make McCoy's father appear, or Spock's parents? McCoy even touches his father, and everyone in the room is able to witness this happening, so it cannot be in McCoy's "imagination".

When they reach the planet, "God" isn't there, as Sybok hasn't willed him into existence yet. He's just expecting him to appear. When he finally wills him to appear, he shouts about his arrogance and that this creature is his doing. Or I could have got that wrong, haven't seen this film in quite a while. By throwing himself into the "God" and joining with it, the Klingons are able to destroy it, as by killing Syborg the God he created with his imagination dies with him.

Well, that's always been my take on it, I should perhaps stop snorting the washing powder....

Sorry. I know this is an old post and you probably already got the answers you were looking for but I wanted to respond anyway. Your above quote pretty much sums it up. There are a lot of god-like aliens in Star Trek. This was just one of them.

My guess is that it took decades for Sybok to develop his mind powers or whatever they were. He must've always wanted to pass the barrier and search for "god" but he didn't have the resources or the power to do so until the time this movie takes place.
