The Batman : Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

AMC Theatres has started to charge higher prices for Hollywood's most popular films — including this weekend's release of Warner Bros.' "The Batman" — as the world's largest cinema chain looks to get more bang from the biggest blockbusters.

Chief Executive Adam Aron on Tuesday told investors that the Leawood, Kan.-based company is bringing variable pricing to its theaters, an idea that U.S. movie houses have long resisted other than with matinees and other exceptions.

Aron said during a conference call that prices for "The Batman" this weekend are "slightly higher" than the prices the company is charging for other movies playing in the same theaters at the same time. This comes after the company previously raised prices at some of its theaters for weekend showtimes above weekday screenings, which tend to get lower traffic.

Demand-based pricing may be a novel idea for American movie theaters, though the practice is more common in Europe, where AMC acquired Odeon & UCI Cinemas Group in 2016.

Aron noted that AMC has had flexible ticket pricing at its European theaters for years. Variable pricing has long been the norm for other ticketed industries, including airlines and sporting events, as well as hospitality businesses such as hotels.

"AMC has been a bold thinker in the area of pricing," said Aron, whose pre-AMC business background is in hospitality. "One who is willing to take risk and one who is willing to lead and one who sees considerable upside opportunity for us ahead if we continue to be imaginative."

AMC did not immediately respond to a request for more details. The company did not say how much it intended to upcharge for more popular films, or what movies other than "The Batman" will be affected. Representatives for Warner Bros. also did not immediately comment.

According to AMC's ticketing website, an adult advance ticket for a Friday night showing of "The Batman" at the AMC Burbank 16 is priced at $19.49. A comparable screening for Sony Pictures' "Uncharted," which was released over President's Day weekend, is selling for $17.99 a ticket at the same location.

"The Batman," starring Robert Pattinson, is expected to gross more than $100 million Thursday through Sunday in ticket sales from the U.S. and Canada, according to people who reviewed pre-release audience surveys.

That would make it only the second Hollywood film to open with more than $100 million domestically since the start of the pandemic. The other was "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which opened with $260 million. People close to Warner Bros. are more cautious, predicting a debut of about $90 million.

Demand-based ticket pricing is controversial in the movie exhibition business. Some distributors have argued that theaters should offer lower prices for screenings of smaller movies to combat attendance declines for non-franchise releases. Movies geared toward adult filmgoers have struggled mightily since the pandemic, while studio action tentpoles have dominated the market.

Movie theater companies including AMC — which has a hefty debt load — struggled to grow attendance during the pandemic as patrons were reluctant to return to indoor auditoriums and Hollywood's film output remained lackluster.

Fuck that shit, fuck all corporate greedy cocksuckers.

Gone

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

I assume ticket prices will be cheaper than that at other theaters, but I don't like the idea of variable prices; other than maybe reducing the cost of tickets for the older movies (e.g., if a movie was released weeks earlier, then the price of a ticket could go down a couple dollars).

And I assume that you will be back to discuss this further???

Cool, but some of that sounds kinda like mistletoe, not for more appreciation but not really what we want now though should be thankful for at all.

Nope

That price is terrible.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

Nope

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

I have never been inside of an AMC Theater, but at that price, I had better not miss a single second of the film!

They had better have waiters to serve us concessions at our seats…

As for the seats??? Those had better be gold plated toilets with a cushy place to park my rump! An ass squirter with warm running water would make the whole experience perfection!

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

On the one hand, good idea to have toidies so that one does not have to leave to miss anything.

On the other, men being men will still stand up to pee blocking the view and will miss the bowl unless it is lit up somehow.
And the place would stink real bad from all those who crap.
And the noise from the flushing would be too much.

Bad idea.
Just have one put in your home theatre if you want that.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

You are over thinking this, Warren.
Shut up, shake off, zip up, sit down, and just watch the damned movie.

Bad idea.

I already have a bathroom…

Since I have a theater at home, I also have a pause button.

Have you gone out to the movies since the lockdown or would you go now?

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

No. I haven't, but then I rarely went before that.
I prefer all of the comforts of home. and I can do without the expense and the aggravation of the noisy people in a theater.

You don't like going to restaurants either.

Are you agoraphobic?

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

I don't think so…
I go to friend's and relative's homes. I get out and shop now and then.
Lately, I have been going to the library and the animal shelter…
I'm looking forward to shopping my favorite nursery for plants for my ever growing garden…
Since it has warmed up, I'm even ditching the treadmill for long walks out in the fresh air, weather permitting.

Would you say that I am?

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

I hear ya.
Yeah, be it ever so humble there is no place like home.

I can relate since I feel like the couch for watching sports is the best and the cheapest seat.
They say there is something about the stadium experience but I am fine without the crowds and the second mortgage for the parking, concessions and ticket prices.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

I use to like going a lot of places. Stadiums were fun, but you are right. The prices for everything are ridiculous. I'll admit that now that I am much older, I can do without "The Experience".
You get a better view from the tv, and instant replays! In the winter, you are much warmer!

I use to enjoy the stock car races and the horse shows. I am just no longer into getting out with a crowd of people these days.

I still enjoy civic things celebrations in the summer. Now that flu restrictions seem to be behind us, I look forward to getting out more.

Is the Ukraine war a reason why the price is up now?

We don't talk about Bruno! No, no, no!

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

No. And for having shameless greed I am gonna short their stock even more so they go bankrupt.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

Not that I went to theatres to see movies all that often but I have lost interest since the lockdown to go out and see them at all.

I just don't feel that excited for any upcoming ones like I used to and I don't stream them.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

I'd pay that amount for an ungodly huge screen with a blasting good stereo and great seats, sure. Isn't that pricing in line with a lot of sporting events?

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

"Isn't that pricing in line with a lot of sporting events?"

It depends.
HS and small colleges can be free.
Then prices vary and get higher the bigger the venue, the closer the seat, the sporting event and the importance of the team in terms of status.
I doubt there is any pro sports where a ticket costs $20.
That is how much it costs just to park in their lot.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

Probably. There is a 4D theater near me that charges $25. The chairs move to simulate movement. When there are rapid fire gunshots they vibrate. It’s good for action films and special effects heavy films.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

Sounds like fun!
All we have in our city is one theater. It's a multiplex which means that you are herded into these tiny rooms with small screens. The seats are close and uncomfortable. Who needs that when they charge $15.00 for a ticket and forget food and drink!

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

Yeah prices are outrageous nowadays even the food. Most theaters here converted to reclining chairs so they only hold half the number of people they used to. It feels more luxurious so you feel like you get your money’s worth.

Sounds wonderful!

On second thought, at my age, in such comfort in the dark, I'd fall asleep and miss the movie!

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

Hell no. I hate going to theatres to watch movies anyway.

I'd go to see the ballet, but to watch a movie where the volume is at 500 decibels, squinting in darkness with tons of people yapping their pie holes or kicking the back of my seat, talking on their phone. Oh please. Pppttthh.

I'm with ya, but I still do go to the cinemas at least twice a month. Readings have Titan Luxe sessions, but need 30mins to drive there. Recliner seats which are very cosy and spacious with a decent sized screen, but the Dolby Atmos can be loud.

I love the ballet.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

Yeah, and I already did. For a movie like this that’s meant to be a cinematic experience, I don’t mind paying such a price to see it on the big screen.

🙄🙄

Too long didn't read

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

I wouldn't pay 0.49cents to see it.

Around $20.00 would be the average ticket price in Australia depending on where one chooses to go to see it and what kind of cinema experience. Event chain are the rip-off merchants and an adult for a normal session is around $22.00.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

I wouldn't pay that to see Jesus when he returns.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

Our cinema has Tuesday and Wednesday showings for $5.

My dad is frugal and only goes to the show on Tuesday or Wednesday.

However, I wanted to see The Batman badly, being hyped for this years and all, so I forked out the money for opening day. I figure if it's a movie you really want to see, and it only happens biannually, then $40 for 2 tickets biannually isn't going to break you.

But of course, it'd wouldn't be wise to do this with every movie. But special occasions, and special movies, yes.

Monster, how should I feel? Creatures lie here, looking through the window.

Re: Would you pay $19.49 to see The Batman?

I would have paid $199.49 to see it. I have never seen a better film.
