Screenwriters : Without Screenwriters There Are No Movies…

Without Screenwriters There Are No Movies…

Okay, there are documentaries.

But Screenwriters come up with the initial idea (if it is not based on a comic book or board game or a remake) and the story and write the *actions of the characters* and write the dialogue and have a finished script which includes everything you will see or hear on screen *before* they hire the director or actors.

The screenwriter is the most important part of any movie. First on.

Re: Without Screenwriters There Are No Movies…

Bill, as much as I agree that a screenwriter are one of the key members of any production team, I don't agree that others are less important.

Simply put, a screenplay is not a film. Screenplays are tools, like cameras, without which making a movie becomes exponentially more difficult and likely to fail. People who have mastered those tools are therefore integral to the production of any motion picture.

This is a collaborative art. It's not about the individuals, so much as the collaboration BETWEEN the individuals. Movies are built out of sharing.

Re: Without Screenwriters There Are No Movies…

He is a riddle.

When I was the CEO of a manufacturing company I had designers who invented new products.

Financiers who invested in the development of that product.

Tool makers who made it possible to manufacture those products.

A work force who produced the product.

Marketing people who created a way to inform people that the product existed.

Sales staff to sell the product to retailers who sold the product to the consumer.

Who was the most important person in that chain.

I agree cinema is a collaborative medium, but you must also agree screenwriters are nowhere near as respected as actors or directors. They're paid less, remain obscure throughout the process, don't get enough credit for their work, sometimes aren't even invited to work on script changes if the director, actor or producer thinks the screenplay needs changing, and many times are blamed for the movie's failure.

The auteur theory has placed the director on a pedastal. I think it's understandble some people will react against this and put the screenwriter on a pedastal too.

And what of the producer who comes up with a great idea and hires a writer to create an outline ? Or some journalist who wrote the article that some director is inspired to buy the copyright from and base a film on it ? Or the studio executive who thought of a great comedy idea about a man trapped in a bathroom while they were sitting on the can reading variety magazine?

I think the OP meant screenwriters who write original screenplays.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.
