I Need To Know : Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfaction?

Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfaction?

I am a frequent user of the message boards and just took my first look at getsatisfaction. After seeing the dreaded "like" and "follow" options, I was wondering if the reviews section for listings is going to take on the same format or something similar. I see a HUGE potential for loss of a user's ability to easily find a review that is objective and useful, and/or loss of objectivity in the reviews themselves.

"Was the above review USEFUL to you?" YES/NO, with any user having the ability to submit a review and ordering the reviews based on that criteria only, by definition provides the most USEFUL experience. IMO, that's a huge part of what makes this site great. For example, take the review of Battlestar Galactica that is at the top and rated the most useful. The dude apparently hasn't rated anything else. For all we know he's never watched anything else. Yet 1317 out of 1374 people found his review useful enough to click the button and click on yes, because it was objective.

Even simply adding in a "likes" element to reviews strays from whether or not they are useful. If you add in the Facebook high school popularity contest element of "likes and follows" of reviewers as a determinant in how visible useful reviews are (or perhaps even limiting the ability to write a review at all to the most liked and followed), this site's utility as a source of easily accessed useful reviews goes right out the window.

No, user reviews are not affected by this change. The message board system and only the message board system is being closed. Nothing else.

FYI Col, I will be permanently boycotting IMDb because of your recent decision. I hope spitting in the faces of everyone who has been regularly supporting this site was worth it. Because IMDb will eventually die without it's message boards. And I hope it does.

I knew that you sold your soul years ago when you added a 'Facebook login' option before a organic IMDb login option (Which you need to click on other sign in options for... WTF?). That's when I knew you cared more about money and less about your userbase. But this... this is the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

I no longer want to be associated with IMDb anymore. And I ask anybody reading this to BOYCOTT IMDb

But this... this is the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

You're certainly not alone. I'll be one of those who'll boycott IMDb too, and so will my friends. Friends who aren't even registered at IMDb, but find great joy reading the comments of certain films on the different boards.

I've also heard people on IMDb who said they'll boycott Amazon as well, and I hope they do. I know I'm one of those too. Thanks for voicing you opinion and I hope IMDb will think twice, before the end of February 19.

Agreed! No one wanted the boards to go but him and the staff. He ignores the people who made this site popular, the users. We all want it to stay and he ignores all the backlash like it isn't happening. Probably the dumbest decision in the history of the internet. It would be like Facebook's taking the comment ability away. It's essential! I mean, are the owners of this site mental? To remove something to IMDB as indispensable as the boards? I can guarantee without the board this site wouldn't have become as popular.

I can't wait for the following weeks after the boards close, the regret will slowly sink in when the user base dwindles and another site takes over.

Re: Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfacti

Exactly! He thinks he's the nice guy when refers hither and thither, but nobody gets a sensible answer why he REALLY wants the boards to go.

All we get as an answer are the links to http://www.imdb.com/board/announcement and https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/imdb-message-boards. Plus all the other links to the IMDb on other social media. Who the hell is interested in that?!? That's not what we are asking, but what everyone is asking (and begs) falls completely on deaf ears.

The comparison with Facebook is really good, without the comment ability and Facebook would just be a big damn ad, which is actually is already, and one reason why at least I don't hang around as much as I once did.

Very few people who don't use the boards know what IMDb is, and especially not outside the borders of the US. I guess it all comes down to money in the end, it always is. Which isn't only tragic, but greedy, and I hope they'll regret it once the realize that very few people are interested in checking the movies here and like you say, when another site takes over.

Re: Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfacti

Perfect. Though I'll miss the message boards, IMO they really are just an adjunct to the sites more important functions. Thank you for responding.

Re: Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfacti

PLEASE DONT SELL OUT!

Re: Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfacti

You're a complete and total *beep* for killing the boards.

Re: Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfacti

Is the message boards system being closed and deleted or just closed? Will people still be able to look over old threads but just not post?

I am the son of a man named Tom.

Re: Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfacti

You will no longer be able to discuss and debate films with others. But IMDb will let you contribute to their ratings systems so that they can use that to market films and make them money.

Re: Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfacti

I'd go a step further and implore everyone who has ever left a review to either delete it or relocate it to a site that values their customers contributions.

Re: Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfacti

I deleted all my reviews, if people stop writing reviews, this is more pertinent to upcoming movies and beyond then there's not much point staying on this site except maybe to see what rating it got but people can go to Rotten Tomatoes for that and to post reviews and discussion forums for individual movies, but the older less known movies have less to no traffic on the forums.

Re: Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfacti

Exactly Jane. Deleting the message boards is a horrible idea

Re: Will the format of movie reviews be changed to mirror Get Satisfacti

I've thought about it long and hard over the past few days and there is really only one way to save these precious Boards......MEDIA ATTENTION....
If any one out there has any contact or influence with the Media, especially Television and even Radio to get the word out before it's too late, that's what needs to be done.

Trust me, IMDb, and especially Amazon do NOT want to be in the world public eye.

I urge you to use your resources, I'm sure someone out there reading this has connections. Even if you don't....pass the word around.

It will work
