Last of the Summer Wine : Why isn't cast honoured by the Queen?

Why isn't cast honoured by the Queen?

In my opinion, "Last of the Summer Wine" is one of the best of British comedies. But why isn't the cast awarded with British honours like an M.B.E., O.B.E., or C.B.E.? I would take this cast anyday over any other show. Frank Thornton, Peter Sallis, Kathy Staff, Jane Freeman, Dora Bryan, Jean Alexander, Bert Kwouk, and others have long been ignored by the British honours system. The show keeps going on and has a rich wonderful history. I envy Roy Clarke's ability to keep it fresh, alive, funny, and clean without going to far to offend anybody. When I watch it, I wish I had a hometown like theirs to go back too when I retire. Who says being old, means you're dead? So come on, let's get this perfectly talented ensemble team nominated for an M.B.E. for their services to television comedy. Frank, Peter, Kathy, Jane, Dora, Jean, Bert and the others who are long overdue for their honours. Please visit the following website

The only cost is postage to the nominator and the process takes 2 years. Frank, Peter, Jean, and Dora are well into their 80s. So hurry them up.

Why not? At least writer Roy Clarke was made an O.B.E. in the 2002 New year Honours List.

Re: Why isn't cast honoured by the Queen?

Hear hear! Especially since we got reminded of Thora's damehood at the beginning of every episode!

Re: Why isn't cast honoured by the Queen?

Dame Thora was 83 years old when she got her Damehood and I believed she richly deserved that honour. Maybe it wasn't her choice to use Dame THora Hird, maybe it was the producers. But she was truly one of the finest of British dames. I know that Dame Judi dislikes Dame as an address. Some like Vanessa Redgrave, Geraldine McEwan, have even rejected that Honour. So they call her Dame Thora, why not? She was 83 years old and at that age, you can call her what she wants to hear.

Re: Why isn't cast honoured by the Queen?

I know Roy Clarke got an OBE in 2002, Dora Bryan got an OBE in 1996, Thora Hird was made a Dame in 1993 and Bill Owen recieved an MBE in 1976 - but I'm surprised no one else has been honoured, especially Peter Sallis (Clegg), Kathy Staff (Nora) and Jane Freeman (Ivy) - they have been with the show since it started back in 1973.

Especially Jean Alexander!

I think it's a shame the Queen never made a royal visit to the show when they were filming, considering it was meant to be her favourite programme, and she's visited Coronation Street and Eastenders! It would have been a great recognition from her.

Re: Why isn't cast honoured by the Queen?

Since my last post, Peter Sallis got the OBE in 2007 and Burt Kwouk got it in 2011.
