Richard E. Grant : Why do we love Richard E. Grant

Why do we love Richard E. Grant

Well...
I know this is not the biggest IMDB forum, but I hope I'll get more than one answer...

the title says it all, I would like you all to write here the reasons why you personaly love the man.

No need of argumentation, just a list.
I'll start here:

his talent in acting, the little thing in his voice trembling when he's moved, his crazy laugh, his sense of nuance in acting, his wit, humour, bad mood (sometimes), looks damn' good, pale skin, huge changing eyes, his writing, talent for caricature, love of home land he knows how to share, his eyes filled with tears at the end of Withnail and I, his respect for theatre, the honest point of view he has on his career, his smile in the Scarlett Pimpernel, the way he "dies" in the Serpent's Kiss, his distance with entertainment world, his maneers in Ready to Wear, his voice, the "lick the mirror handsome" scene in the Doctor Who spoof, the huge emotion in the first scenes of Jack and Sarah, what he wrote about Hugh 16d0 Grant in With Nails, his accent, his delicate way to drink lighter fluid/white vinegar...

up to you!!

With . . . nail . . .

I realise that Richard is a very talented actor (as well as a fine writer is Wah-Wah is anything to go by) but it must be said, the sole reason why I love the bugger to death is because Withnail & I is my favourite film ever and he gives one of the finest screen performances ever. Whenever I watch that film I am awed by the sheer vanity and attitude of an alcholic oaf who is still so brilliant.

The fact that Richard is a teetotallar in real life just makes his acting skill even more impressive :).

Just in case he ever reads this, I'd like to thank the man for giving me some of the most endlessly quotable dialogue ever. And for giving me the nerve to walk into class at school half-drunk with a bottle of wine in my hand. I almost got expelled and I've never regretted it for a moment.

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

I personaly would love REG just for his looks alone. He is very very VERY handsome, and has such beautiful eyes and colourings but his acting is amazing as well. He is one of those actors who is able to involve you in whats going on in the film. plus he's got a breath-taking smile right?

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

I met him 10 years ago when he was filming in my village and he was a really nice guy. I was only 10 then! I asked if he'd mind me taking a photo of him and he asked if I'd like to be in it too and found someone to take it (I only realised later that the film in my camera was already full- gutted!).
So I've always kept an eye out for his projects because he was nice to me. :-)

Withnail and I is my second favourite film of all time (after Quadrophenia) so I have even more respect for him because of that!

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

I can't remember the first thing I saw Richard E. in but I've been obsessed with him for years! It's definitely the voice, the eyes and his turn as Withnail - Genius! I was lucky enough to go to a charity screening of Withnail about 7 years ago where Richard E. auctioned off a load of stuff from the film. It all went for much more than I could afford, but my mum and I offered £100 for his charity if I could have my photo taken with him and he was very happy to do that, plus I got a kiss on the cheek for it! Heaven! Funnily enough I've been besotted ever since! His books are also so funny. I love With Nails, and I have The Wah-Wah Diaries open in front of me right now! I also found an audio casette of him reading Dracula. One of my favourite books read by one of my favourite voices - it doesn't get much better! I better stop before I get too carried away.......

Why?

...er...because he was hilarious in 'How To Get Ahead In Advertising'?

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

His gorgeous breathy voice! His lovely eyes and smile. He eats healthily and looks after himself.

He's honest, and doesn't like to let people down, and is very generous and thoughtful to everyone, judging from what I've read in his books and heard from other people.

The day after he sold his Withnail Coat in 111c a charity auction in 2001, he met up with a bunch of his fans in a posh London cafe. He moved round the table so everyone could speak to him, then he paid for everyone's lunch!

I wasn't there, and have never met him, but he emailed me last week (honest!) to thank me for his 50th birthday present. WOW! Everyone I know is sick of me going on about it!

No I won't be posting his email here! Actually, even though it said Richard E. Grant in the name box (that can be changed quickly in any account), it didn't look like it was his own email, from the initials at the front. But still, he emailed me to thank me - how cool is that?!

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

lucky you...

I love how the actors who play vilains in lot of films happen to best the nicest in real life.

Thanx for answering to this topic.

The man is a genius.

I felt some love should be expressed here.

;-)

I'd love to meet him, would be impressed but thrilled and happy.

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

Okay, I'm getting on the Richard E. Grant bandwagon very late but he's in Australia at the moment and every time he's been on TV he's just seemed like the most intelligent and funny guy.

Whether it's making fun of morning TV presenters so subtly that they don't even notice or quoting Alice in Wonderland as his favourite book, he's making me want to see every movie he's ever had anything to do with!

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

Possibly I can't think of an actor who does the sort of controlled hysteria that he does. Withnail is a helluva performance, a character who is selfish, sneaky, but somehow quite tragic and strangely loveable. Also very talented as a diarist and a writer..

... OK, I'm biased. I've written a novel and I've always had REG in mind to play the lead role, have been trying to write the lead character's dialogue to match his speech patterns. So, if REG or his agent wants to talk, they know where I am.

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

He's been my favorite actor ever since Jack & Sarah. The pathos conveyed in those beautiful blue eyes. And Withnail, a classic.

Wish we could see him more in the States. Looks like he's been doing lots of British TV, voice work, etc.

Hope those Brits know he's a national treasure!!

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

I have read few threads where so many pleasant things have been written about one actor, and I have to say that I agree with all of them. He is one of those few who really can move your emotions when you watch him, he is so good at either making you laugh, want to slap him or feeling terribly sorry for him in whatever role he's in. Ever since I first saw him all those years ago in A Christmas Carol I have always given him some time when I've had a chance to see him. Also he has a great voice, so very english. He is without doubt a very intelligent man in real life.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm doing a Jimmy Stewart imitation myself - James Stewart

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

Only seen him sadly on posh nosh, Scarlet Pimpernel, and Jack and Sarah. I love his voice, love how he smiles, love his EYES, man! they're a kind of almost inhuman blue, I dunno.. They're just different to most eyes I've seen, watery. When he smiles, I get a sense that he's gleeful about something, not just happy, but REALLY happy (especially evident in Jack and Sarah!)

And his voice, when he speaks softly, is just... captivating. It's a beautiful thing :)

Kung fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene...

for all those little things….

I love him for all those little things....

1) because of Whitnail and I.
2) noone can work up a hysteria like him.
3) his height, wonderful smile, his dark hair, pale skin and big blue eyes.
4) his voice and diction

and most of all:

5) he's a brilliant charachter-actor!

Re: for all those little things….

ditto, can't be bothered writing it all out but my first viewing of Withnail and I pretty much made me a life long fan, he's just a joy to watch.

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant…..CHOICES

Life is about choices.

As an actor, you are defined by your choices....but it's not as simple as 'he chooses dignified roles..he is dignified'
or
'she chooses large budget films, therefore she is a sellout or, even worse, a vacant voice'

NO.

It's the larger picture of choices that tell a story. And Richard Grany is a man whose choices in association define him as compelling, if not worth taking a deeper look.

Yes, he's physically appealing, but without the substance to apply the many lessons and secrets that lie beneath the surface of life, we are left looking at nothing more than a 2-dimensional picture...and REG is, if nothing else, multi-dimensional.

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

I was about 7 years old when I first saw Hudson Hawk, and since then I remember I used to recognize him in different movies. So he's like some kind of childish memory for me LOL!! Apart from that, he's a great actor!

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

nobody else could portray a a believable smiling Franz Kafka.

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

The funny thing is that I was so convinced by REG's portrayal of sleazy characters that I didn't realize how lovable he is. But recently I've seen him on a public television documentary about the great hotels. He is infectiously happy. I googled him and discovered all these smiling photos and that he has been married for more than 20 years and has children (probably grown). The more I see him now the more I like him. He has a great bad-guy look. I seem to recall seeing him as a bad priest. Out of those roles he seems to be bubbling over with joie de vivre.

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

He is an intriguing guy. Reminds me of old colloniel england, british empire in India, those kind of things.

Re: Why do we love Richard E. Grant

He's just a really talented actor. I like the type of comedy he does as well. I think he would make a fantastic Doctor (Who). I know he did the comedic sketch of it and he was just golden in that!
