Why "Best of Both Worlds" Succeeded

I've often stated that Frakes is much better at directing than acting.

Almost any episode that involved Frakes taking over a lot of scenes failed entirely. He was horrible at portraying rage, sadness, bewilderment, etc.
But he was solid in these episodes. Why? it required him to portray a guy who was calm and in command-- director qualities.

In other words, Frakes is good at playing himself, and nothing else.
