Star Trek: The Next Generation : Which Data Episode Is This?

Which Data Episode Is This?

I used to have a DVD which was a collection of episodes that were chosen by the actor/actress who played the Captain in that show

So William Shatner chose his favourite 3 episodes from Star Trek: Original Series (1966-1969)

Patrick Stewart chose his favourite 4 episodes from Star Trek Next Generation (1987-1994)

Avery Brooks chose his favourite episodes from Star Trek Deep Space 9 (1993-1999)

Kate Mulgrew chose her favourite episodes from Star Trek Voyager (1995-2001)

Scott Bakula chose his favourite episodes from Star Trek Enterprise (2001-2005)

And the DVD was made up of those episodes and also some episodes chosen by fans. I sold the DVD when i started buying the complete Seasons of each show on DVD

Patrick Stewart chose an episode of Next Generation, where Data falls in love with a woman and they start dating, a very funny scene is where Data goes to his room carrying a lunchbox and says 'Honey im home' it is a good and funny episode

Which is it?

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

In Theory, if I'm not mistaken

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

4.25 "In Theory"

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

Season 4, episode called "In Theory."

It is a funny and sweet episode, though it ended on a mixed note for me.
Probably cause the crew lady (can't remember her name) expected a lot from Data, even though he straight up warned her that he didn't really know what to do and she was already in an emotional state when the relationship started. It's not a bad episode at all, just sort of finished oddly to me.

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

I liked how she was all emotional about the end of the relationship and he is like nothing happened.
I have been in a lot of those relationships. Lol.
To me when it's over it's over. So long. Have a nice life. Please refrain from stalking me.

I thought she was meh, it's over. seeya.

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

I think both already knew the relationship wasn't going to work out, they just didn't know how long it would last.

She (I really need to remember her name) needed a stable person who's been with her and understands what she was going. That's one reason why she was attracted to Data: he naturally remembers exactly what people want to know/hear and can be prompted to deliver. He doesn't judge, has been there for her as a friend, never tries to intentionally hurt others, and has this way of making her feel at ease.
It's assumed her ex-boyfriend was a bit of a jerk (though how much and to what extent is never really presented), so she needed those qualities Data had to help her bounce back. While it probably would have been best if they just remained friends with him as her strong support, she was very emotional and lacked self confidence at the time, making her feel that she needed something to prove to herself that she was capable of having a deep, strong, relationship with someone.
If I'm remembering the episode correctly, she does talk to the crew about what turn the relationship might take if they keep going. She didn't sense much confidence from them, and Data's inability to 'sense' what she needed only gave her more doubt. When they met up on the final night, I got the feeling she realized she didn't have any strong romantic attraction towards him and figured out she needed to just focus on improving herself. She's probably mad at herself for ruining what was a really good friendship, but that just gave her all the more reason to straighten herself out.

With Data, he never wanted to hurt her or ruin their relationship, but he just doesn't get what he needs to do. He's viewed her as a good friend and coworker that needed someone to listen to them about their problems, and naturally has a desire to assist.
When the relationship turned to something based more on feelings than predictable behavior, though, that's when he knew things would either right themselves out or end in disaster. No matter how much he tried or experimented with, he just couldn't get anything to go the way he expected them to go.
While he couldn't feel the breakup as she did, his sensors probably did take some time to get used to the fact they were no longer a couple, and thus those related senses were no longer valid or needed which caused them to disconnect and be stored.... However he stores them.
Being the being he is though, he more than likely let himself wallow in the customary 'break up' phase for a time and sought out his cat to help his functions return to 'normal parameters.' Since his programming is very sophisticated, it probably didn't take much time for those sensors to shut off or whatever (not too much info techno babble) and be set up in a way that they wouldn't affect the whole system negatively later down the road.

Long post, I know, but I just feel like both knew in some fashion that they wouldn't last. She might have been able to feel it, but he could already pick up on the fact his attempts weren't really helping her and make his own conclusions. Just goes to show, it's best to really consider one's expectations from a relationship based on the small cues that are present.

Well thought out. A little too well. Lol.

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

Yeah, my brain seems to love rambling, detailing, dissecting, and search for meaning in anything I greatly enjoy.

Too bad for me that my favorite things were hardly required texts and books for English class. I managed figure out the strategy after a few weeks with the teacher/professor, but it's still annoying how my mind loves to mix up priorities and waits until after classes are done to go "hey, you know what was really interesting about that literary work? *deep, philosophical, literary reflector dish sorting-jumble." Haha.

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

I agree with you. My head is full of useless info. Lol.

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

Do you know which are Shatner's, Stewart's, Brooks's, Mulgrew's and Bakula's favorite episodes? You gave us the number of their favorites, but none of their titles. I'm just a little bit more than curious.

Spenser with an "S", like the poet.

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

I heard previously Stewart's favourite episode was The Inner Light.

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

You can have more than one favorite.

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

Patrick Stewart briefly lived in my building around 15 years ago when he was in a (NT?) production locally, and in the few times we got to chat he said Inner Light was his favourite. I'm guessing he didn't say that publicly, because it might appear egotistical (as he is the sole focus of the episode), but that's what he said...

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

Thanks for that info Michael but I've seen interviews where he did say that Innerlight was his favourite episode from an acting point of view.Did he mention A Fistful Of Datas as well I believed he directed the episode and was quite proud of what he had achieved with some hard and tough labour to make that episode (working long hours on location in the hot sun and working from early till late just to get the shots he wanted.)?

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

I didn't manage that level of detail! He just said his favourite was Inner Light, whereas a different episode was quoted in the post I replied to (are you viewing 'nested'?).

Maybe he's changed his mind more recently...

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

Well what I mentioned (In Theory) was taken from the extras on the TNG DVD/BRD set but like I said I heard on other occasions him mentioning The Inner Light as his favourite. No I am not viewing "Nested'(don't even know what that is?)I am viewing ENT on DVD.

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

'Nested' refers simply to the way you view this forum, and if you're not viewing it that way you might not have realised I was replying to a specific post.

And I'd never seen any extras or DVD's, so I'm embarrassed to report that I wasn't quite sure at the time what episode 'Inner Light' was!

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

You don't have any of the dvds, Decker?

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Robert Vaughn

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

Sadly not. I recorded them all onto VHS as they were broadcast, and watched them from time to time over the next ten years or so.

Re: Which Data Episode Is This?

Ask for them for Christmas. Worth it.
