Steven Spielberg : When is he ever going to shoot a film entirely in 65mm?

When is he ever going to shoot a film entirely in 65mm?

I know he's used 65mm for the effects heavy shots in Close Encounters but he's never shot a film entirely in 65mm. I think the majority of his films are not only wonderfully directed, but beautifully lit as well.

I really hope one of his next films are going to be shot in that terrific format. I just LOVE that Nolan shoots Dunkirk entirely with 65mm and IMAX camera's though I have the feeling the majority of that film will be shot in IMAX (which is even better lol) but other than Tarantino with Hateful Eight and PTA with The Master, no one else is utilizing the format.. Look, I know that 65mm camera's are expensive af and limit the director in terms of shooting style (like no zoom for instance) and the cameras are bigger and all that. On top of that are logistical reasons, Peter Jackson wanted to shoot LOTR in 65mm but due to the fact that they shot it in New Zealand and there not being an industry to make the prints made it impossible to shoot in that format. Even though I'm grateful it was shot on 35mm imagine LOTR in 65mm...
On top of all that I also know that there are fewer and fewer 70mm projections in the world. Sure, I hear that Laser in the real IMAX theaters is a just replacement but other than that more and more theaters are going digital if they haven't already. Luckily, there are still 70m 5b4 m projectors left and I think 65mm (and IMAX) deliver the most beautiful images in film ever. It are wonderful cameras and it feels more real than any Xth K camera because it's a different kinds of sharpness know what I mean?

I just really really hope Spielberg will shoot at least one of his new films entirely in 65mm, it would be incredible, especially with Kamiński as the DOP.

War, what is it good for?

Re: When is he ever going to shoot a film entirely in 65mm?

Oliver.I agree WORD BY WORD with what you said.I think exactly the same.
It´s what i think at many time.
The LOTR in 70mm would be INCREDIBLE!!!.
Spielberg never made a movie in 70mm and is possible one day to make.
He never said because,i think,Close Enconters is ALMOST a 70mm movie.
The question is:to shoot a movie in 70mm is MORE EXPENSIVE i think and is a rare format, actually, like you said in the post.
Would be great a science fiction Spielberg movie in that format, yes,of course but i never heard Spielberg to say that he wants to do a 70mm movie.
It´s a pity, i agree.

Well I recently saw Empire of the Sun 70mm print and it was amazing.

Sure it's expensive but he's one of the best directors working today, if he'd set his mind to it I bet the studios will grant him his wish.

Fingers crossed we see him directing a film entirely with 65mm cameras!

yes,i hope so too but a good movie for to make is "Robopocalypse" for exemple."RP1" isn´t in that format,i´m sad but i think that one day he will to do a movie in 70mm.

Re: When is he ever going to shoot a film entirely in 65mm?

It is great that RP1 is being shot on 35mm tho, but yeah, 70mm Spielberg would be fantastic

I saw Empire of the Sun with the 70mm print and it was indeed amazing! I wish Spielberg would shoot something in 70mm.

Maybe the announced Montezuma project?

Re: When is he ever going to shoot a film entirely in 65mm?

Not very likely as he seems to prefer a grainier and grittier aesthetic.

He's a grain lover and so is Kaminski.

Re: When is he ever going to shoot a film entirely in 65mm?

I think it's unlikely. If he had done it, it would have been for COT3K or EOS. Surprised he didn't go the quasi IMAX film route for WOW.

I think also, he has come around to digital some what. I know he was a lover of film.
