Today, the vast majority of 3D movies are made and shown digitally. In the 1950s, they needed two film projectors running together. In the 1980s, a single film projector with a special lens was all that was needed.

Much like today's RealD, polarizing filters and silver screens were needed back then. But the possibility for projection problems were greater, sometimes causing headaches and nausea. Maybe because of fewer problems today, 3D has caught on better this time than in the past. The 50s era lasted only 3 years with 50 features. The 80s version lasted about as long, with maybe half as many features. So far, we're into the 6th year of this generation of 3D.

Oh, and there was no 2D to 3D conversions back then.

Hope this helps.

I saw the question about 3-D movies in the past, and on Youtube is a video taken from The Stewardesses In 3-D special edition DVD called "A Short History of 3-D" which should answer all your questions.

The video is separated into two parts and here's the link to part one:

It's unfortunate that many 50s classics only surface these days as red/green anaglyphs. Although this is cheaper to distribute and show, it's not as good as polarised projection. Most people have probably never seen these movies as they were meant to be seen.
