Elvis Presley : What were you doing when you found out he died?

What were you doing when you found out he died?

It was 10 years before I was born but my Dad said he was fixing a bicycle when one of his friend's came over to his house and told him that Elvis had died.

Sitting in the back of a pickup truck. Coming home from camping. Listening to a little radio. Couldn't believe it was true. Was 15 at the time.

Re: What were you doing when you found out he died?

My dad was coming home from work and my grandmother/his mother told him. I wasn't born yet when he died.

Re: What were you doing when you found out he died?

I was writing a short story when I heard the news over the radio. I put down my pen and just remembered shaking my head. He was only 42 -

I was sleeping in my car seat when m 16d0 y parents heard the news on the car radio. Given I was a year old and sleeping, I didn't even notice at the time, but I know what I was doing!

Re: What were you doing when you found out he died?

My Co-workers at work told me. I worked for the Bureau of Consumer Protection, Federal Trade Commission in Washington, DC.

Re: What were you doing when you found out he died?

I was in my college dorm writing a research paper when the news came on the radio. I remember distinctly...I gasped, sat back in my chair and was so stunned I didn't move for several minutes.

Re: What were you doing when you found out he died?

I was two when he died, but my mum remembers my older brother, who was staying a few days with my aunt, phoned her up to tell her. She said it didn't seem real and my brother who was eleven at the time was completely shocked.

Re: What were you doing when you found out he died?

My mum was roughly 11 weeks into her pregnancy. Should I consider myself Elvis' contemporary?

Re: What were you doing when you found out he died?

It's like the Kennedy assassination or Lennon assassination, if you were old enough you knew exactly where you were and what you were doing when this event happened -

Strumming LOVE ME TENDER on a guitar.

Re: What were you doing when you found out he died?

In the bathroom. Radio was on.

Re: What were you doing when you found out he died?

I was talking to my friend on the phone (we were both 12 at the time) when he said he had to go because he just heard that he died. I hung up and started yelling to everyone at home that Elvis Presley was dead (my parents were big fans since the '50s when they were teens, while my siblings became fans as they grew up). Since he was my favorite singer for four years already, I was in kind of a daze that entire week.

No blah, blah, blah!

Re: What were you doing when you found out he died?

I was living in the Los Angeles area at the time and I was driving home from work in the rain. I was listening to 710 KMPC radio and heard Gary Owens announce that Elvis had died in Memphis. It was a total shock. Later that evening Wink Martindale played "If We Never Meet Again (This Side of Heaven)" from the "His Hand In Mine" album, released in 1960, on his show on KMPC. That time was so sad.
