The Watercooler : What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

It keeps growing to my side, and has done for years. I'm literally at my wits end with it. I've tried bleach, plant killer, boiling water.. The spiders that inhabit this thing!!

The minute I start chopping it down at MY side they come out and have a meltdown and ask what I am doing and ask me to stop because it will kill it off! tf! Um, I'm chopping down this fucking ivy what does it look like ya fucking idiots!!

They can do whatever tf they want with it at their side but it is beyond a joke now. AND SOMEHOW IT HAS STARTED GROWING ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE GARDEN!! PRETTY SURE THEY PLANTED A ROOT THERE OR SOMETHING

So, yeah. I would really appreciate some tips because at this point I'm about to go douse the lot in petrol and wipe the lot out.

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

I can't even use me hedge trimmer or shears anymore because I just get attacked by spiders so I just need something, anything that will shrivel it up and kill it.

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

Bought a hedge trimmer and I don't even have a hedge!! It's like a mini chainsaw. I feel like throwing it over their garden.

OH. OHHH! AND THE BEST PART IS THIS FUCKING IVY IS DISGUISING A GATE THROUGH TO MY GARDEN!! IT'S LIKE SONETHING OUT OF THE SECRET GARDEN. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW FOR YEARS UNTIL THEY ASKED ME TO TAKE MY LOCK OFF MY GATE SO THEIR DELIVERY GUY COULD TAKE SOMETHING THROUGH!! THE AUDACITY!!!

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

Post a pic.

You should call the police station to ask what the laws are. You could get in trouble if you kill it. The law could also say they have to trim it or pay a fine.

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

I will when I go out there again. I'm just tidying up before the electrician comes AGAIN! Lol. Oh fuck today honestly. Not even 10am and I'm ready to scream at somebody.

I might call my local station tho and ask about it because this is a joke and strsssing me out.

Ivy stressing someone out. You cannot make this shit up!

Ivy isn't stressing you out. The spiders are.

i suggested some troubleshooting tips 4 days ago. did you at least read them? try the steps?

if circuit breakers/fuses trip/blow, then there is an overload on one side or both. the overload could be a faulty wiring job in the electrical box, or it could be at the socket, or it could be the component: telly, fridge, laptop, printer, fans, mommy's little helper, and the like.

or the ONT box is at fault, but u said that was replugged.

i'm going with faulty breaker/fuse or bad wiring which overloads one side.

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

I unplugged EVERYTHING in my house, EVERYTHING!!! and then I plugged the kettle in-tripped, plugged the toaster in- tripped, plugged the dryer in- tripped, plugged the air fryer in-tripped, plugged the microwave in-tripped. The only thing that DOESN'T trip it off is the bloody fridge and washer.

You can't tell me that everything in my house has an electrical fault. The toaster and kettle are newish. It's obviously a fault with the wiring.

The rcd was replaced and now even that doesn't shut the electric off when you press it.

The weird thing is that everything tripping the opposite side of the house, no matter what side it's plugged into.

The last elecrician that was here said the wiring is wrong somewhere but I was barely paying attention. I just don't think he could be arsed to figure out the problem. I said I thought it was my pro tripping the electric, and then he instantly said it was my ont box, and then he fucked off and said if it keeps tripping then to call the landlord.

Fucking joke. Don't even get me started on why I have been waiting a whole week..

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

Oh my GOD I could scream. The electrician just spent 2 hours trying to figure out the problem and he is stumped!! He tested everything and it's all fine so now he has to come back with a co worker and examine the full house 😐 I have to take all my flooring up in the bedrooms by the time they next come. I wanna die.

send nudes or at least tasteful candids before you end it all.

are you paying for this or is your insurance covering this? in the us of A, unless you ahve a special service plan, you pay and i mean through the sex orrifices pay. some electricians will do a looksey and possibly ID problem and then quote a repair job. some charge by the hour– and that means even if job done in 10 minutes u pay by the hour.

why would u need to remove flooring? brits have wiring running under flooring and not through the walls? if no problem, i wouldnt go through cost and hassle to do this. u can go to ur local home improvement place–u got those in england?– and buy a resistance/impedance tester. you can check for short circuits cuz only way to trip a breaker/fuse is with excessive current= short or exceptionally LOW resistance.

us of a uses 120 Vac 60 hz. for big jumbo loads, its 240 VAC. englanders and europe use 220Vac 50 hz/cycles. i assume your water heater and AC take 440?

last year, i had the following. actually, started in 2019. in one room, the power would go out totally. this is where the wifi and cable boxes are so no internet!! there are 3 wall outlets and all 3 have 6 plug capacity= 18 load could be plugged in. i only had 2 lamps, tv, stereo, laptop charger.

weirdly, in the kitchen next to this room, the oulet where microwave plugged in, and the stove, and a wall outlet were also "dead." The kitchen light and fridge were ok. the stove is a 240 volt load. everything else is 120.

with no human input, the lights in the first room and the affected kitchen loads would come on BUT they be flickering like a cheap pink floyd coverband light show. usually 15-20 minutes and power come back. sometimes, it was ok and maybe a few days go by before repeat. but sometimes the system would fail again in minutes. this was happening in summer and winter. never in spring or fall.

one time in the room with no power, i plugged in a phone charger to an aoutlet. guess what? i could see the phone charging icon displaying the "charging" symbol. WTF?? if my lights and tv and wifi are out, how the fuck do i have this?

i started sequentially plugging/unplugging loads to see if maybe i had a loose connection in the outlet boxes. nothing.

i asked my local repair store and an expert said the problem was 99% in the outlet boxes and was probs a loose return wire or ground/neutral wire. i set out to examine each box and the connections inside. 1% chance problem was a loose breaker.

but before i could do any of that, by chance i was in back when power went down also killing my home's AC system. i was looking at the digital power meter and clearly saw that power coming into the house but now not only the usual room outage but the big giant AC load. at no time did any breakers trip nor did they feel "loose".

i called the power company and explained what i saw. they dispatched a repair crew. these guys took under a minute to diagnose the problem: the input power lines had not been properly insulated when connected to the lines running into the electrical panel/breaker box.

there are two 120 Vac lines coming in. the house is wired so a balanced load is approximated: 120 for one half, 120 for the other half. with each 120 supplied by a seperate line= 2 lines. the big monster loads like stove and AC take 240: both lines go into these breakers for these 240 loads. you need BOTH 120 lins to power. because one 120 line physically seperated from its connecting house line, NO powere. and because the tiny loads need 120 to turn on and power, no workey. the phone charger worked cuz it doesnt need the full blown 120.

TL,DR: check the actual wiring come in from BritPower or whatever and make sure u have no external wiring problems. since these guys repaired the lines, no problems.

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

Movieman is full of shit! Even the super concentrate roundup has an extremely difficult time killing English Ivy.

You'd be better trying to smother it with the money you'll spend on that Ortho garbage.

Go with the strongest roundup or anything with Glyphosate.

That Ortho shit contains Ammonium Nonanoate,
Which won't do fuck all on English Ivy

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

Buy a 1x1 ft 1/4 inch sheet of steel. Weld a ring to the corner and a flat disk perpendicular to the plate on an edge adjacent to the ring. Sharpen edge opposite disk.

Pound the plate into the ground with a hammer along the edge of the property line. Pull it out using the ring. Repeat until you have a long thin trench cutting through the roots.

Buy one of those long 1 ft wide rolls of really thin tin. Cut a length. Bury it in the trench. You can now poison the ivy on your side and it can not grow back through the new root barrior.

Beware the sound of one hand clapping.

Spray it with vinegar. It will die away gradually. You'll have to do it every day.

Any specific vinegar? I noticed nettie and another suggested that but I mean do I just pour the bottle straight on or what? I'm not really a gardener.

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

Plain white vinegar they sell at the store. Pour it in a spray bottle then spray it on the ivy every day. In a week or two, it'll dry up.

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

Killing English Ivy with Herbicides One of the reasons that killing English ivy is difficult is because the leaves of the plant are covered with a waxy substance that helps prevent herbicides from penetrating into the plant. So, in order to be effective at killing English ivy, you have to get through that barrier. The first thing you can do to make herbicide more effective for removing ivy is to use it in the winter on a sunny day. The cool temperatures make sure that the spray does not evaporate quickly and gives the herbicide more time to penetrate into the plant. The sun helps keep the wax on the leaves more pliable and more easily penetrated.

https://www.hunker.com/13426432/what-is-the-salt-and-vinegar-mixture-that-will-kill-english-ivy

Topical chemicals used for killing ivy are only effective when the temperature is somewhere between 60 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (15ºC to 32ºC). You’ll also want to work on a day with minimal wind in order to prevent any chemicals from blowing onto nearby gardens and landscaping.

https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-kill-ivy/

The take away here, is the time of year that you try to apply topicals is important. Otherwise it’s manual removal. Good luck.

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

Yeah, or maybe the US Army still has some stockpiles of napalm and Agent Orange defoliant left over from the Viet Nam War that could be put to good use.

Re: What is the best way to DISCREETLY kill off my neighbour's ivy?

I wish I could help, because I know how invasive ivy is and how hard it is to eradicate it, but one problem I have with your request is that there really isn't a way to "discreetly" kill off their ivy without them noticing that something's awry. I mean, since they've already noticed you trying to chop it down, which they promptly bitched about, one can only assume that if you used some sort of chemical ivy killer on it, they would surely notice the dead vines and immediately conclude that you were the one responsible. So, a ninja-style ivy-killing attack may be out of the question.

Many cities/towns in the civilized world have various laws and town codes regarding maintenance on or about property lines. You should really talk to your town authorities first before you do anything drastic. Depending on what your town's code says, it might in fact be your neighbor's responsibility to keep the ivy and other vegetation trimmed back.
