Comic Books and Comic-Con : What has been the dumbest retcon you've read?

What has been the dumbest retcon you've read?

I was reviewing in my brain about the story that ended the initial Spiderwoman series. It never really caught on. Due to poor sales, It got canceled. The last story featured some magic that wiped out her existence. That was a total cop out. For the most part, retcons clean up continuity issues or is terrible writing used to cover up previous terrible writing. What's your most terrible retcon you have read? Spidey clone/Gwen Stacey comes to my mind as a very notorious example.

Parallax as a yellow space Pokemon is something I really dislike.

DC: The New 52. I thank them for getting Barbara Gordon out of that chair and back into a Batsuit but I can take her back as Oracle if they brought back the standard DC universe pre-New52.

Hopefully after Convergence things will make more sense.

Re: What has been the dumbest retcon you've read?

What I am reading is that the current continuity will remain the same. Since, for the most part, I absolutely hate New 52 that isn't good news.

I'm sure they won't tamper with whatever is going on in the Batman books since they never do but the rest of the DCU might get retooled somewhat. I'm still not understanding the existance of the Legion of Super-Heroes or if the multiverse is back, why should we even settle for The New52-niverse.

Re: What has been the dumbest retcon you've read?

They really didn't mess up Batman too much. They somewhat distanced him from Catwoman which I didn't like but that will likely change. Too much money riding on him to do otherwise.

The LSH is active now but not in their own feature which will make zero sense if that continues after Convergence. You still have the multiverse but, hopefully, they won't limit it to 52. DC would say "But, 600-1,000 Earths are too many to keep track of." The reply would be to not use them unless you needed them.

By far, my major beef has been the obliteration of the Earth-2 heroes. I actually met Marton Nodell some years ago and found him to be absolutely delightful. Now, they've changed his Green Lantern to the point I don't recognize. The fact that he's gay isn't the issue. The previous incarnation had a superpowered gay son and they handled that very well. That was ripped out. Wildcat is now just a white haired older man in a muscle shirt. What publisher willingly destroys their heritage? The Marvel NOW reboot was superior and done with minimal damage to continuity.

I hear that it makes the DCU more accessible to new readers because the old one was "hard to follow" How? Only if you have the attention span of a 5 year old.

Comic books are comic books. The writers get bored and they mess with things. That lasts until someone comes by and restores sanity.

Sorry, but after reading these things on and off since 1962 (yes, I'm that old) this really ticks me off.

Good grief, talk about a small world.................

Actually, I wouldn't have met him if I hadn't brought along John Romita Jr's entire run of Daredevil for him to sign. He made sure to sign every last one of them and we talked for awhile. He then pointed over to a table and said "Go talk to Marty, you'll like him".

I did and I did.

Re: What has been the dumbest retcon you've read?

X-Factor Annual 2: Quicksilver's becoming a villain being attributed to Maximus' mind-control. Now that was a cop-out if ever there was one. If I remember correctly, part of my anger over that retconning had to do with Maximus being in a coma, offworld, or otherwise in a position where he wouldn't have been available to mess with Quicksilver's mind when he became a villain and started attacking the Fantastic Four and the Avengers.

I know it's a cliche answer since MOST people don't like it.....but that WHOLE thing was just stupid.

Instead of writing interesting stories where everyone knows who Spiderman is AND with him Mary Jane.....they just erase it.

Completely stupid.

Well, I've got news for you pal, you ain't leadin' but two things: Jack and sh*t and Jack left town
