Mary and Max : What are your favorite words??

What are your favorite words??

I have a ton, so I'll add more when I remember them (don't have a list like Max did).

Idiosyncratic or idiosyncrasy

Guacamole

Galooshes

Plethora

Detrimental

Awkward

also

Dappled

Humdinger

Huckery (that's a very kiwi word, I actually don't know if it's used in other countries)

Walnut

Rambunctious

all I can think of off the top of my head, though I know there are several others.

Re: What are your favorite words??

LOVE Rambunctious

And Walnut never came off as a fun word until I read your post

"You paid for parking? For me?"

Re: What are your favorite words??

I like walnut because most people say it 'wall-nut', but my sister and I both say 'wol-nut', coz there's only one l after all...

Where does your love of words come from? Do you write?

Re: What are your favorite words??

There's only one L in "Walmart"...

Re: What are your favorite words??

What is Walmart?

Re: What are your favorite words??

I wish I could ask that and mean it...

I'm prettier than Eliza Dushku! I'm also a short, flat chested bimbo, isn't life grand?

Words I like

Vulgar

Re: What are your favorite words??

Well, he named one of mine... kumquat. What's not to love? They're even cute.

I can't seem to think of words I like, but I'll throw in some toothsome words... ones that please the tongue. I sometimes catch myself rolling one of these around my teeth, as it were, possibly trying to work out whether I'm pronouncing it properly. Or maybe it's just when it's been a long day...

Bogus
Sesquipedalian
Triskedecaphobia
bumptious
pugnacious
phooey
Guantanamo
cerulean
scrumptious

And has confuzzled been invented independently by several people? My daughter is convinced she made it up but I'm sure of hearing it at least twice apart from her saying it... once I think she was the one who said she heard it somewhere, but now she's claimed it.

Re: What are your favorite words??

Alright Zero? I hope I don't ruin my carefully constructed reputation as a deep and thoughtful person, but do you say 'twat' or 'twot', as I've sometimes heard it pronounced?

As an aside, we discussed that word at work (UK) and women found it the most offensive word, worse than *beep* even.

Re: What are your favorite words??

Yes, women hate it. Which most likely contributes to why I find it so endearing.

As for my pronunciation, I am an American, so therefore I pronounce it correctly.

^_^

twaht. I think we (the US and the UK) both pronounce it pretty much the same.

Re: What are your favorite words??

That doesn't clear it up zero, and I don't know how to describe the UK pronunciation, but ours to me is much harsher.

I'll go with a t and the 'wat' rhyming with 'rat'.

Re: What are your favorite words??

Some good ones there wunderwaffe. And you're right, it's how they trip off the tongue that matters rather than what they mean, or how they look written down.

I had to look up the pronunciation on this one but it was worth it:

Circuitously

Re: What are your favorite words??

Thank you very much stemal.

And I, too, had to look up the pronunciation and also the definition of that one. But it's a great one and I'll try to fit it in somewhere whenever I can. One more for the vocabulary...

Re: What are your favorite words??

Wunderwaffe, I had seen the word a few times (circuitous more often) and thought it would be pronounced circuit/ously as I'd never heard anyone say it.

In theory, it should be easy to use in conversation, but I wouldn't dare try it!

The Hunt is great, I agree.

Re: What are your favorite words??

I've never heard or even seen it either. And I would be too shy to attempt to say it in a verbal conversation, but I think I'll somehow work it into one that's in text. It's a lovely word. And I'm really enjoying this thread. I'm harvesting so many new words to add to my vocabulary.

The Hunt is one of my favourites. I'm glad you liked it too.
