Anime : Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I prefer Brotherhood to the original FMA

I didn't find Clannad:AS sad. Everything is fixed in the end.

While on the topic of Clannad, Sunohara's treatment was not funny and one of the most mean spirited things I've ever seen.

I don't think Cowboy Bebop is the greatest anime of all time.

Chobits was the most boring anime I've ever seen, and I don't believe for a minute that the show was seinen.

Full Metal Panic! felt formulatic (Fumoffu was hilarious though).

Speaking of FMP, Teletha is to me what Nina is to Code Geass fans.

Makoto from School Days didn't deserve to die.

What Gankutsuou did to TCOMC is unforgivable.

Light is the villain of Death Note and I'm glad the show ended as it did.

Shinji Ikari is a realistic character. He's not as annoying as Sasuke.

I didn't find FLCL engaging, but to be fair I had a hard time understanding it.

I found Kamina from TTGL to be an annoying attention hog.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Never watched Evangalion & I will never watch it.

I'm the Corruptor.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Why?

Hey, Soldier. Do you know who's in command here?

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I don't love Cowboy Bebop

I DO love Gantz...even the filler ending.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I don't care for Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Not interested in NGE. In fact, I find it kind of pretentious

I like Dragon Ball a lot more than DBZ

Sailor Moon is a overrated and terrible heroine who couldn't accomplish anything without her friends to help her

Bleach went to crap after they went to Hueco Mundo

Pokmon was at its best during the Diamond & Pearl Era

I like Naruto's supporting cast better than its main characters. Ditto Bleach.

I like Soul Eater, but can't stand Death the Kid & his OCD about symmetry. Also hate Blair.

Witch Blade actually got better as it went along

I think I like lot of the animes of yesteryear more than the ones being made today

99% of anime after the year 2000 is piss.

Straightedge means I'm better than you.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Watanabe's Samurai Champloo and Kids on the Slope are better than Cowboy Bebop.

Evangelion 3.0 is the best anime film made in the last 10 years.

Waiting in the Summer is better than AnoHana, which is still a good show in its own right.

Black Rock Shooter is an incomprehensible mess with little to no redeeming qualities in the narrative.

Summer Wars is better than The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Kiki's Delivery Service is Miyazaki's best movie.

Voices of a Distant Star was very mediocre when compared to Shinkai's subsequent outputs.

DBZ has horrible animation.

The ending of Angel Beats is not really sad.

Paprika is Kon's weakest work (save for Tokyo Godfathers, which I've yet to see).

I'd hate to take a bite outta you. You're a cookie full of arsenic.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Akira is a mediocre snorefest.

Princess Mononoke is average at best.

TTGL's Yoko is a useless t!tty-monster.

Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance is the anime equivalent of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Summer Wars is better than The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

DBZ has horrible animation.

Paprika is Kon's weakest work.

Yes, yes, and yes. Tokyo Godfathers is superb, though; rent it sometime.

Here are some of my unpopular opinions:

-Love Hina is incredibly unfunny

-Clannad, Spice and Wolf, Rozen Maiden, and Eureka 7 were complete wastes of time

-Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, and Nausicaa were all too long and far too complicated

-Porco Rosso is the best film that Miyazaki has ever directed

-Ponyo is a much more enjoyable film than My Neighbor Totoro

-Cowboy Bebop is good, but not great

-5 Centimeters Per Second is a total bore

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Porco Rosso is the best film that Miyazaki has ever directed

I agree.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Porco Rosso is the best film that Miyazaki has ever directed

The Wind Rises was better

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Disappoint? What?

I've been wanting to watch Monster for a very long time, in fact I think it was one of the first recommendations I got, but have been postponing it to watch shorter series. I'm not that fond of Death note as its second half is a step down, but it's a lot of fun. And I am interested on Trigun, though not as a priority.

Films I've watched: http://www.imdb.com/list/gZZx1xtikWQ/

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Trigun starts off strong, but after episode 13, it gets bogged down by heavy-handed melodrama and rehashed plot threads.

I've also read the first volume of the Monster manga, and I promptly dropped the entire thing. Honest to God, hasn't the author ever heard of the word "subtlety"?

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

-Love Hina is incredibly unfunny

That's actually a popular opinion of the show now.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

My top3 series are, currently:

1. Azumanga Daioh
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Mushishi

The problem, though, is that I put above them my two favorite movies, Grave of the fireflies and Spirited away. So Cowboy Bebop ends up in the 4th position.

Films I've watched: http://www.imdb.com/list/gZZx1xtikWQ/

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I can just make a selection:

I don't think Cowboy Bebop is the greatest anime of all time*.

Makoto from School Days didn't deserve to die.**

Light is the villain of Death Note and I'm glad the show ended as it did.

Shinji Ikari is a realistic character.

I didn't find FLCL engaging, but to be fair I had a hard time understanding it.

*Of course it's not the best. It's just the 4th best =)

**Actually, I think of this in other way. Being the massive amount of worthless characters this series was, I just didn't think it had to be Makoto the one who specifically had to die out of everybody.

Black Rock Shooter is an incomprehensible mess with little to no redeeming qualities in the narrative*.

Summer Wars is better than The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Voices of a Distant Star was very mediocre when compared to Shinkai's subsequent outputs.

*I still kind of enjoyed it, though. If you are talking about the OVA, I haven't bothered with the 8-episode series.

And...

I like the original series ending better than The end of Evangelion, and to me it makes a lot more sense.

On The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya:
--Haruhi is supposed to be a spoiled bitch. It's okay if you hate her and the anime can still be good.
--I do legitimately enjoy the second season and that event.
--It is one of the most absurdly misunderstood series as it is often labeled as cliché yet it has a crazy original premise and it is very wildly -at times absurdly- innovative at its narration.

Ghost in the Shell: Innocence is better than Ghost in the Shell.

Howl's moving castle is a narrative mess with an awful ending trying to tie everything together.

Some One Piece filler arcs are way better than any canon arc coming from episode 408 on.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

This isn't meant to be a condemnation of this thread, but I do feel like some of the opinions being expressed are only unpopular amongst some groups of anime fans whereas in a different group they're the norm? It's like how, yeah there are lots of people who like the live-action Transformers movies, but there are also lots of people who don't, and I'm not completely sure that the yay-sayers outvote the nay-sayers, especially if we're talking about overwhelming majorities rather than just a 60-40 split.

Not sure why you specifically replied to me (was that intended), but that doesn't really apply to what I posted. Sky Crawlers got mostly positive reviews in general.

You do make good points though. I just think people here (including myself) are saying our opinions are unpopular based on general consensus.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Sorry if it looked like it was specifically directed at you, when I'm making a general point I just reply to the last post, maybe I should reply to the first one? I actually wasn't sure how popular The Sky Crawlers was though, not least because even if a lot of critics liked it (and I do personally like it), I'd heard quite a few people say they didn't like it and it has less than 7/10 on here so I figured that it wasn't something that just about everybody liked? Anyway, I respect your opinion on the movie and I'm not trying to start an argument or anything, it's just that since clearly a lot of the public don't pay much attention to the consensus of critics when deciding what to watch I feel like just the opinions of critics don't represent the opinions of everyone, they're just one group of fans/people with an interest. I know it's more complicated than that, but I guess that's what I was trying to get at with my post.

Not that it's wrong to state your disagreement with critical consensus or anything, just that their opinions are just that, even if they're taken particularly seriously by some people for reason ranging from happening to usually agree (which is pretty much why I pay attention to what critics say, but will sometimes see something anyway even if they didn't like if I think I will - Hotel Transylvania is a prime example of this, I didn't know that it had received a rotten on RT before I bought it but I would have bought it anyway even if I had known because it looked like a really fun movie and I'm a fan of Genndy Tartakovsky, and I did end up really liking it when I bought it so my instincts were right), to wanting to feel intellectually superior to other people.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I prefer Brotherhood to the original FMA

How is that unpopular? Most of the fans of the original manga prefer Brotherhood to the original FMA series.

My unpopular opinions:

Hetalia is a terrible series.

Elfen Lied is overrated.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is better than the Vampire Hunter D movie from 1985.

Romeo x Juliet is awful in every possible way. Even "Gnomeo & Juliet " was less insulting to the source material.

Naruto isn´t that good and Sasuke is one of the worst anime characters ever made.

Hunter X Hunter is better than Naruto, Bleach and One Piece.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Fist Of The north Star is an amazing Anime series and it has some genuine depth alongside all of the head-exploding action.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Sasuke is one of the worts anime characters ever made.

How is that unpopular? Most "Naruto" fans I know find Sasuke irritating.

-While the 2003 FMA is good, it's not without it's flaws. Wrath was annoying as hell, giving Envy a gender was about as unnecessary as revealing that the Force is the work of micro-organisms, making Hohenhiem Envy's father was a Masashi Kishimoto-level *beep* twist, Dante had a good concept to her, but was defeated too easily, and Fuhrer Bradley died out of pure stupidity.
-"The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" was a terrible series with character that either had no personality (Yuki, Kyon) or were incredibly annoying (Haruhi).
-I think anime can be adapted into live action if put into the right hands. It's really like that with any adaptation.
-I think that there are Japanese voices more annoying than the dub voices. Orihime Inoue and Goku as an adult come to mind.
-On the subject of Orihime, I don't think she's the worst ever anime character. She's realistic because she doesn't want to fight, and her healing has saved many lives.
-Sakura Haruno is not the Aquaman of anime. She's actually useful.

Not necessarily anime, but Japanese entertainment related:
-I don't want Saban crucified for "Power Rangers." "Sentai" isn't this deep, adult series. It's a toy commercial that's been running for over 3 decades.
-On the subject of "Sentai," "Samurai Sentai Shinkenger" isn't perfect. I'm three episodes in, and the characters aside from the Green Ranger are either annoying or have no personality. Shinken Red is a self-righteous prick.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Most "Naruto" fans I know find Sasuke irritating.

I know that Sasuke has many haters, but he also has many fans as well. As the Naruto TV tropes page says on its YMMV section: "there are fans who think he is just as justified in his actions as Naruto is."

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

One Piece is one of the worst animes.

I have tried very hard to get into it, at least five times(1st on Fox Kids, dvds from Netflix in different areas, now Toonami). I just don't care for a single characters, too slow pace, guess I never really cared for pirates. I don't mind slow pace if I care for a character or main plot. I don't find the wackiness funny, it just feels forced.

Don't care for FLCL. I could feel my brain cells dying while watching.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Cowboy Bebop is not that good

Spirited Away is not that good

I like Shiji Ikari. The only time I hated him was in The End of Evangelion

I like both FMA original and Brotherhood equally.

I never ship guys

I hate Light from Death Note, and L is not that great.

Asahina from TMOHS is annoying as hell

I hate Bleach and Fairy Tail in Japanese. They sound beyond awful.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

God bless you sir. Ive been trying to bring this message along to everyone for years but the English released Fist of the North Star movie marketed the film as nothing more than mindless over the top action. They need to watch the TV series.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Here's mine:

I can't STAND Crispin Freeman as Alucard in Hellsing. He has a smooth nice American voice but that is not what the character is at all. I can only listen to the awesome Japanese voice.

That being said - I only like Anderson's Scottish dub. I wish I could have Japanese Alucard and Scottish Anderson voices in a battle.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Hellsing Ultimate: Not much to it other than flashy, over-rought fight scenes and characters who spend all day wearing huge, maniacal grins. It gets really old, really fast.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I actually hate the animation in Ultimate for that very reason. Those long arms and shark grins are silly.

Another unpopular opinion I hold is that TV series Alucard looked scarier than OVA Alucard.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Okay, here I go...

- The anime of Naruto Shippuden sucks and doesn't do any justice to the manga at all

- I prefer the 2001 English dub of Akira over the 1990 dub

- I think Soul Eater is stupid and overrated

- Fairy Tail has the best English dub of any anime

And lastly...

- I think The Lion King is WAY better than Kimba the White Lion

A Decepticon never retreats - Starscream (G1)
[Formerly CosmosX9]

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Another one:

Princess Mononoke is the bets animated film ever

Tatum is the best voice for Sebastian, so superior to Ono

I liked the 2nd season of Darker than Black

Orihime from Bleach is average looking

My favorite role of Vic's is Tamaki from OHSHC

Bleach is the best anime

The End of Evangelion is a terrible movie

I like Shinji more than Asuka

Fate Stay Night sounds a lot better in English

Anohana is not that great

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I think most ppl prefered the newer dub of Akira

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I didn't find Clannad:AS sad

Don't watch the last episode.I prefer it to end sadly rather than alternate endings

I will walk over your cold corpses

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I prefer dubbed when it's available.

I hate characters who share characteristics with animals.

I hate it when female characters try to be cute.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Didn't like Cowboy Bebop & found it to be overrated. Samurai Champloo was better.

I'm the Corruptor.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I thought most people prefer dubbed?

It always seemed to me i was in the minority that I prefer subtitles. The only exception is Robotech. I like the dub and rewritten plot combining 3 separate animes into a sci-fi epic.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Isao Takahata's films are better than Hayao Miyazaki's.

Hayao Miyazaki films from Princess Mononoke onward are boring, unsubtle, badly written messes usually with tacked on endings - It doesn't help that most people treat Miyazaki like some god of anime that must not be spoken ill of, it's a shame that he has become synonymous with Ghibli which robs credit from the other people at the studio (I don't mind his films up to Porco Rosso).

Innocence is better than Ghost in the Shell (I know this has already been mentioned in another post).

A show that has been edited and/or dubbed can be better than the original version - See Samurai Pizza Cats vs Kyatto Ninden Teyandee or Cowboy Bebop.

“No matter how far a Jackass travels, it won't come back a horse” Batou - GITS 2: Innocence

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

My opinions.

- Every Tenchi Muyo! series in existence is terrible.
- FLCL is horrible, i felt myself becoming dumber as subjected myself to each episode.
- Toriko is currently the best shonen anime.
- Naurto, One Piece, & Bleach all suck.
- Fairy Tail, while good, is horribly overrated.
- Dub is better than Sub.
- Durarara!! is better than Baccano!
- Gurren Lagann is not the greatest thing to ever happen, according to most, it is.
- Inuyasha should not have gotten The Final Act.
- Big O Season 2 is just as good as season 1.
- Deadman Wonderland is pretty popular right? it's a POS.
- Gun X Sword is a worthy rip off of Trigun & Bebop.
- I find Chobits extremely boring.
- I haven't & probably never will watch NGE.
- The last 13 episodes ruins Death Note.
- Eden of the East is completely average. Most tell me it's amazing.
- HSOTD sucked.
- Wulin Warriors is THE GREATEST SHOW EVER...that one was a sick joke.

That's all i can think of at the moment.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I hated Gantz. The pacing was godawful. The CGI was just laughable. The Dub and Sub were almost Bible Black status at times.

I agree, After Story's ending was a major copout.

Claymore had one of the worst protagonists I've ever seen, Raki. Claire wasn't that great either.

Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal is far better than the series.

I don't like fanservice in anything besides the ecchi and harem genre.

Sword Art Online was trash.

Elfen Lied is far from "mature" or sad. It's themes didn't hide the cutesy characters, fan service, harem, or incest love interest.

That being said, I actually enjoy some harem and ecchi anime.

Mirai Nikki was bad.

Watamote is not funny.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

"Attack on Titan" is not the greatest series ever. In the manga, all the side characters look the same. Also, the characters are basically stock military movie characters. You have the prejudiced vengeance seeker, the timid soldier that always panics in battle, the cold female, the star pupil bully, and the hardass instructor. Finally, the fanbase pisses me off to no end. If you dare to say anything bad about it, they will have you crucified. They never shut up about this series. They also tend to blurt out spoilers like as if they think you've already seen it. Yeah, I really needed to know that Eren became a Titan before I actually got to that part. It really helps my viewing experience that I don't get surprised. AOT fans are quite possibly the most annoying fanbase I experienced, and I really hope AOT dies quickly so those people can move on to the next passing fad like they did with "Mirai Nikki" and "Sword Art Online."

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Thought of some more:

One Piece really went downhill after the timeskip...which is the Most Pointless Timeskip Ever

Fanservice is actually okay if done in moderation

Space Dandy is actually more fun and enjoyable than a lot of shows that have a plot.

Being a fan means being unashamed of what you like, no matter what anyone else says

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Space Dandy is actually more fun and enjoyable than a lot of shows that have a plot.

This is unpopular? I thought most enjoyed the show?

I'd like to add to mine...

- Zetman & Code:Breaker, despite both having 35 episodes worth of material crammed into 13, are both very good shows.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I ship Laluche with all 3 girls

I don't ship any guy from Free!, none of them have a romantic feelings for each other.

Rukia is one of the best looking girls in Bleach

DRRR is WAY better than Baccano

Death Note is boring

Lucy from FT is overrated

Porco Rosso is better than Spirited Away

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Porco Rosso is better than Spirited Away

I'll agree that it's at least as good.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Since I’m too casual in the anime fandom I’m not completely sure what would be considered unpopular or not, but here goes anyway.

Also I like to write so this will be long.

With some rare exceptions I’m a dub only girl.

I adore Lelouch of Code Geass, but he’s overall a villain protagonist to me. I also consider him to have made Susaku the shell of himself that he became.

Guilty Crown has a interesting premise, but overall poor execution.

Madoka Magica is a welcome deconstruction of the magical girl genre, but the designs of the characters, witches, and labyrinths are atrocious and kind of destroy the seriousness of the world for me.

I have never watched Naruto and the overall art style of the show makes me not want to.

Howls Moving Castle is the only movie by Miyazaki that I liked. The others I've seen are boring, and I don't like his art style.

Anime hair colors bother me, and take the seriousness of a show down several notches.

I've never watched Neon Genesis Evangelion and have no real desire to.

I've tried to watch Clannad and Last Exile several times over the years, and just can't. The boredom factor of both shows is high.

Fan-service (female or male) never has a place.

Huge eyes- I can do with less of it. Much less.

Fullmetal Alchemist is the only true version of the show. I tried to watch Brotherhood and it was way to comedic. Both shows have very ugly art styles though.

Bleach is an action anime first and foremost. This is not a good thing.

Death-Note is at the same time an interesting chess match between a villain protagonist and a antihero while also being kind of boring.

The only good romances are subtle ones.

I know it’s Japanese made, but I can’t help but be slightly annoyed when clearly westernized characters are sleeping on futons, eating with chopsticks, sitting at a small table on the floor, wearing kimonos, bowing, eating box lunches, excessively wearing school uniforms etc.

A sure fire way to make me ignore a female character is for her to be sexualized eyecandy and/or solely a love interest.

Sword Art Online- Is boring with poor execution. Stopped after episode 8 and have no desire to pick it back up.

Shipping annoys the hell out of me, and I will never get in a conversation both online or off that involves it.

Soul Eater- The art style is an eyesore, and I despise the characters of Death the Kid and Black Star.

I don’t like Pokemon and never really have. I’m honestly wondering why it’s still around. However, even having said that, Ash, Misty and Brock’s adventures are the only canon to me. All others fall under discontinuity.

I don’t read or care about manga.

Fairy-tail has a lot of magic (I love fantasy anime’s), but the extreme amount of comedy killed it forever for me, and that's why I can’t finish it.

D-Grayman- Considering the subject matter (apocalyptic) it should be darker than it is.

Cardcaptor Sukura is a delightful magical anime, but romance wise I think Sukara’s feelings for Li came out of nowhere.

Raki from Claymore is adorable and I don’t have a problem with him.

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

I don’t like Pokemon and never really have. I’m honestly wondering why it’s still around. However, even having said that, Ash, Misty and Brock’s adventures are the only canon to me. All others fall under discontinuity

The reason it's still around is because it's being bankrolled by Nintendo/Gamefreak. As long as Pocket Monsters is still popular, the show will continue to be made. And since it's more popular now than ever...

Though I'm sorry you discount the stuff after the Original Series. I for one find the Diamond & Pearl years to be the Show at its best, IMHO.

Being a fan means being unashamed of what you like, no matter what anyone else says

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

- Ghost in the Shell does not stand up to repeated viewings
neither does SAC. The sequel I'm not sure about as only seen once.

- Elfen Lied is overated. Mostly because it could have been excellent, but in the end you just

- Dominion Tank Police Acts 1 - 4 is one of the best animes you've (probably) never seen

- Violence Jack: Evil Town is another very good anime not only no one's heard of but alot of ppl don't like either for some reason

- Gantz is perhaps tied best anime series I ever saw

Re: Unpopular anime opinions you hold

Ghost in the Shell does not stand up to repeated viewings

It does if you're like me and love cyberpunk. I end up watching certain episodes again and again. Seen the first two films dozens of times because, for me, they present interesting philosophical questions.
