So fucking what???? I don't care what the self-proclaimed experts think and no such thing is "universally agreed upon" anyway. My personal favorite horror films have nothing to do with what some film critics hail as the greatest horror films. Besides, The Exorcist trumps both of those films (if you want to talk about an undisputed classic!) and it's far scarier than both of those films combined.

film experts are the most well regarded, respected, right film people there are, the film scholars and film historians. they know like it or not what is a great film.

so while i appreciate your view and alternative stance on what films are great and what aren't, for cultural impact and knowledge of how important and great a horror film is you can't argue with the facts that prove rosemary's baby and the omen are two of the most important and best horror films ever made.

you're wrong there is something called universally agreed upon when it comes to films. certain films have it where eveyrone in the know knows they are some of ths best films in their genre ever made. and these 2 are those films.

film criticism is an art so that it being has a scholarly approach which leads to truths and facts. this is not just an opinion based profession. otherwise why reviews or rate movies at all if no facts or truths can ever be made? if it was all conjecture that these critics make then there shouldn't be any critics for movies.

i've never asked you what you think of the exorcist before.

I mentioned The Exorcist because it has similar themes as Rosemary's Baby and The Omen, so I was comparing it to them. For me, it was a far more disturbing film and it's certainly considered a great film by most "respectable" film critics (the same can't be said for its sequels).

guess it being effective and scary and disturbing depends on sound bc my sister said she watched it with the sound almsot all the way down and she wasn't scared by it or impressed with it at all.

I guess it also depends on if you were brought up Catholic or not (I was) as it involves a Catholic priest and the Catholic rite of exorcism. Suffice to say, the movie scared the shit out of me when I was a child.

The Sentinel is another film with a Catholic horror theme that scared the shit out of me at a young age. I would never claim that The Sentinel is a more "classic" film than Rosemary's Baby or The Omen but I personally enjoy it a lot more than either of those films (and neither of those films feature lesbian demons or Beverly D'Angelo masturbating!)

Again, it all comes down to personal taste and experience. My favorite horror films are not always films that are considered classics of the genre (though my Top 10 are all highly regarded films). So be it. Some of the films I like are "universally despised" by most critics. Their opinions don't matter to me. If I like a supposedly "bad" film, I like it and make no apologies for it. While I appreciate the opinions of others (if they're delivered respectfully, that is), I don't base my opinions on what others think. Before I see a film, I usually try not to read too many (or any) reviews on said film, that way I can form my own opinion. I'll read the reviews AFTER I see the film to see if the critics think as I do.

if you put a young or 30s or 40s or 50s beverly d'angelo masturbing in a movie i'm going to have to watch it everytime. the only thing better is her showing her tits in ths shower in nl vacation or showing her tits in hair.

i'm the same way i never watch a movie based on a review or rating i always base me wathing a movie on what the movie looks like, a trailer or the level of interest i have in watching the movie from hearing or reading things or seeing parts of a movie years ago or just recently.

i hate more than anything the force fed, we are right so you have to watch a movie bc we all agree it's great, brain washing of critics and rotten tomatoes namely. rt is the worst modern invention of nowadays bc it makes it seem like they are 100% correct about every movie and every tv show and they aren't always right about movies like martyrs a masterpiece given a low like 45 or 55% rating and not fresh as they annoyingly say so to them it's not worth watching that is fucking bullshit, for this movie and for movies in general on rt.

there is nothing worse than making people make up their mind over watching a movie bc the monopoly of rt is the final word on a movie being good. and there is nothing more annoying than the tag that a lto of mvioes bget in trailers nowadays certified fresh by rt.

this is cringe inducing annoying bc we can't make up our minds about watching a movie or not so we have to first consult rt to determine if we can watch a movie. tis annoying enough for me to want to never watch the mvoie or tv show that gets this treatment to rebel against this dictatorial format.

so do you like the movie tourist trap or lets scare jessica to death? 2 movies never given the respect or acclaim or reputation or notoierty that they deserve. their status is all based on a cult of movie goers and movie fans. you know people who care and appreciate and know about films more than any other group of people.

i love that just a couple months ago during halloween time TCM actually played lets scare jessica to death! so awesome to think that its important enough of a film to TCM that they played it. we need a lot more people to watch it and tourist trap.

Yes, I love Let's Scare Jessica Death! It's one of my all time favorites. Very creepy and atmospheric 70's horror film.

there is no horror movie as creepy, disturbing, unnerving, dark, eerie, or as hard to get through as tourist trap. there is also no horror film as weird, spine tingling, nightmare like, bleak, dread inducing, or original or harrowing, or awesome or well made as tourist trap.

it is a one of a kind film that leaves you with a dreadful, petrified, shell shocked feeling the whole way through it. this is grimy, palpable real fear, realistic, '70s gritty raw horror film at it's best!

the weidness of it is key bc had it not had the supernatural and strangeness of the sets, shadows and light contrasts, and weirdness of the villain and the set pieces and the atmosphere than it would have been great but just a standard, well made slasher movie and maybe not a classic horror film.

i can't think of a better or more effective in creating fear film that has ever been made.

accomplishing believable possessed mannequins and making them scary and disturbing as well as the moving mariontte dolls and the doll in the beginning is a huge feat in the history of film.

from the very beginning in the scene at the gas station with the evil doll laughing you are thrust into this mysterious macabre weird disorienting world that is very claustrophobic to the end, you are flabborgasted and stunned by everything that happens. this film from that gas station scene never lets you breathe or relax, it's unrelenting, tenacious and the most consistent scary and disturbing film ever made.

so in this way this film is malicious. i was looking at the shadows in my room afraid of what is in them while watching this film as my imagination kept being sparked with fear. and in the last 30 minutes i kept thinking about stopping watching it bc i was so tortured by what i had watched.

so is tourist trap in your top 10?

It's been a few decades since I watched it. Yes, I enjoyed it and thought it was a better than average horror film but it wasn't "too disturbing" for me.

it was made back when horror movies had to have a certain pedigree, excellence, back when they had to be professionally made you know what i mean by that?

also it was made back when horror movies asssumed you were an adult watching them, and anything thing is they just didnt' care if they scarred you for life or freaked you out or did permanent damage to your psyche and memory. they showed you no mercy and were ruthless in their content.

so is tourist trap in your top 10 now that you think about it, maybe bc i mentioned it here? maybe you didn't remember it when making your list or maybe you now reconsider it on your list?

An entire community of men dedicated to killing off their wives and replacing them with androids is more sinister than one dude killing off some pesky teens. That said, I like Tourist Trap. It's a horror film with some original ideas, but it's still basically a slasher film with all the usual slasher film cliches (any film that starts out with teenagers stranded on a deserted country road is usually a good indicator). If you think it's The Godfather of horror flicks, then good for you. I'm glad you like it that much. Maybe I'll give it a rewatch sometime soon but I doubt that my opinion will change that much.

big nod to you for terrifier, a very rare recent horror film that is perfect and is so well made it is a masterpiece. it is very disturbing and well, terrifying oh and demented and fucked up.

you have to watch laid to rest from 2008. it the best slasher film made since 2008. it is the most susepnseful, creepy, disturbing, never playing to the funny, joke telling slasher villain or winking at the audience meta, or ironic humored, and never letting up on suspense horror film made since 2008.

also yuo have to watch the anthology film all hallows' eve, it is very immersive and has the same quality great, old '80s horror films have.

yep, the orginal thing is vey stupid and tiring and should be unnecessary bc these films being made are often unnecessary but you know what? the key in point is to only say which version if the remake is a good movie. so for the martyrs, a nightmare on elm street, and so many other remakes you dont' have to put which version bc we know which version.

you have to watch all hallows' eve. it's from the same director who directed terrifier. i think it's better than terrifier or at least is more nuanced and artistic than terrifier.

you have to watch laid to rest. it should be on every person's top 10 of the last 15 years lists.

it's the most straight forward traditional, professionally made, brutal, realistic, gritty, eerie, harrowing, disturbing slasher movie made in the last 15 years. it's so great that as a horror movie fan you are amazed by how well made and effective in giving you fear and dread that it is.

i love how you put a clarifier at the beg. of your list saying off of the top of your head just in case you forget any movie and also non gialli i love that also bc there are so many classic great ones that you'd have to list 100 movies to include them all in a list.

where is house by the cemetary by the way? no list is complete without it. the same is true of zombi.

i love that you put maniac the original on your list. why did you put maniac original but not the remake. to me the remake although not as great as the original should be on every top 100 horror movies of all time lists.

why did you list hereditary but not midsommar? midmsommar is the best horror movie made in the last 10 years.

Love both of those too. 😂 Rhr Maniac remake made me look at Elijah Wood differently. Didn't think he had a role like that in him.

Saw it in a tiny theater on its limited release and it was one of the most visceral theatrical horror experiences I can recall. Agreed: Wood has always has a slightly creepy Keene painting vibe IMO, and it perfectly played in to the role. Plus, “Goodbye Horses” was used to great effect.

I think of there being a distinction between horror and thriller and, of course, suspense is suspense.

Like "Jaws" is one of my all-time favorite movies, but I don't know if I would count it as horror. Same with "Carrie" and "Halloween", both of which I think are closer to being suspense pictures. "Carrie" is really more of a melodrama. If somebody wanted to challenge this, I am open to a fresh perspective.
