Summer Movies : Too many superhero movies?

Too many superhero movies?

Am I alone? Do we really need all these?
Not to mention plans for a 3rd version of Hulk
A Deadpool movie? Really?
X-Men Origins

they are taking over the summer and from the looks of it, next summer aswell.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Well you don't have to watch them if you don't like the genre.

Find something else to see!

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I don't watch most of them. TDKRs is the only one I'm looking forward to ATM.
It just seems a bit overboard ATM. They are dominating the summer blockbusters. I'd like a little more originality instead of B-list superhero #8.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

It's just another movie trend. Not so long ago it was thrillers and before that horror films. The whole industry goes in cycles.

There are some other movies out there, however, such as Super 8 which looks quite intriguing?

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I don't think that that are too many superhero movies, just like the comics it's a culture that will stay here forever, and with new movie technics, it is a perfct era for this type of movies.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I love Marvel (plus Superman and Batman). They can throw all they want at me.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

It's me again. Forgot about this topic but happened to stumble on it looking through old posts. Funny to see how things have developed over the last few years. I'll be the first to admit I was waaaaay way off with The Avengers. I didn't say I think it would bomb, just that part of me hoped it did which would put a big dent in the superhero movie genre. Although I'll freely admit I did think it might be a disaster and that the movie would fall apart under the weight of too many big characters. Instead it was a massive success and made the genre stronger than ever.
I actually liked The Avengers. It knew what it was and deliver big screen spectacle and perfect popcorn entertainment.
And I'm looking forward to the new X Men movie. Looks like a fantastic cast at least.
And while not a superhero, I'm super excited about news of The Sandman although it's too early to tell if it will be any good or not.

Overall, I still stand by my view that there are too many superhero movies. I don't hate them, just the quantity and fascination with one particular sub genre. I think like westerns and disaster movies in the past this trend has a limit and it will be reached soon enough. Even in this topic you can see the gradually increase of people over time agreeing that there are too many.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I'm only 24. I think it's the news of what they are planning to make more than anything that annoys me. There are lists of obscure superheros in the pipeline. They won't all get made but even a few would be too many. I really hope people get tired of them by the end of next year. I'm hoping The Avengers movie is a dud and the fad will die, and we can move onto something else. I hear boardgames are in at the moment. Yippee!

Re: Too many superhero movies?

not really. it's more of a sub-genre within the action genre. like slasher movies are to horror.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I'm loving the superhero onslaught.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I am a fan of Superheroes but I see your point. Whilst Thor was great and Xmen too, I thought Captain America and Green Lantern were a bit take it or leave it.

I hope Avengers is good ... but that's because I care bout the franchise.

I would like to see more mature comic book fare translated to the screen, like Preacher, The Sandamn or even antoher pass at Hellblazer(Constantine) \

The Ghost rider sequel looks terribad!

"Internet Whiner, I care not what you think!"

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Really? I thought the new Ghost Rider looked good... Then again, I haven't seen the original, so...

I figured out how to do colors!!!

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Theres a scene in the new trailer where Ghost Rider is pissing fire! I thought that was the nail in the coffin for me.

"Internet Whiner, I care not what you think!"

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Yeah, that was a little odd...

I figured out how to do colors!!!

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I'm excited for these movies! I love superhero movies and the actors in the movies. They're reliably entertaining. But it's nice to see some variety. I saw Trespass with Nicole Kidman and Cam Gigandet. It was a nice break from the superhero movies and a good film in general. http://bitly.com/rnXyjf

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Like Mantiso says, if the Avengers movie is a dud, that might be the beginning of the end for superhero movies. I also agree with possible_psychotic, mature comics and graphic novels turned into movies will keep things interesting, at least for a while.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I think why lot of people are tired of superhero movies are that they are blockbuster. Unlike romantic comedies or horror films which are not suppose to be huge movies of the year like superhero movies are. Superhero is sub-genre, so it is like a poster said above about a slasher to horror movies.
Here is another example if every summer there was two or three blockbuster disaster movies for the last ten years, I am sure everybody would be sick of it. Same can be said about superhero movies, there been way too many of them.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Superhero movies are fun and enjoyable (for the most part).

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I loved just about all the superhero movies this past summer with, believe it or not, Green Lantern being my favorite.

Bring more on I say.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

It's because of the demographics of movie watchers. They'll make a ton of whatever people will watch, and comic books must have been at their peak at the time when people who are willing to spend money on movie tickets now were young. Or, more likely than just comics, marvel comics. I never read any comics but I did have almost all of the transformers and watched the cartoon. I also watched the xmen cartoon. Gi Joe also but that was an embarrassment of a movie. I mean, a Wayans brother...really? If you think about it, there have been superman movies since like the 60s or something. Christopher Reeve was the first rehash superman.

I agree about all the Hulk revisions. That doesn't make any sense. There's a third guy playing Bannon in the Avengers movie too.

There have been way worse trends.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I collected comics most of my life, so I'm glad they are finally making most of them into movies now. About 75% of them are pretty decent I think.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

The problem with the genre is that they're no longer events anymore. Batman 1989, Spider-Man, Superman 78, X-Men, those were all epic events. Now that we have over four in one summer, it ruins the coolness factor of it all. Superhero films used to be very big events unlike any film that year, now they're just a dime a dozen, with all the critics now beginning to compare each other (not even treating them like a real movie, just a "comic book movie")

That's what I love about Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. He makes them so epic and charged that they feel like a totally different league than the other superhero films released lately. Once upon a time, a simple Spider-Man or X-Men film used to be able to do that, but now they're just pale compared to the sheer denseness of Nolan's films. While other superhero films have become stale, Nolan's have risen above the staleness and truly are epic pieces of filmmaking.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I think it's a matter of time before the superhero fad becomes passe. Unfortunately, I also believe that we'll see a few reboots of the most popular superheroes before the genre fades. Perhaps on the 4th reboot of Spiderman and the Hulk, audiences will begin to tire and demand something new.

Just a few years ago, everyone was lamenting the craze to put 70's television shows to film. Superheroes will be the same. There's only so many ways one can tell the same story.

Personally, I have never been a fan of superheroes. I remember liking Superman and Superman II in the 1970's, but mostly have avoided the genre. The few that I have been dragged to have been so over-the-top CGI that it killed any suspense or sense of danger to propel the usually weak plot.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I guess you didn't read my post.

I don't watch them.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I miss the old-fashioned non-superpowered action flicks !

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Honestly, I do too!

The car chases from French Connection and Bullitt, Charles Bronson and Clint Eastwood kicking butt, real explosions, casts of thousands...

There was a real sense of excitement in those films. A real sense of vulnerability. The action was performed by real people (even if it sometimes was a stunt man) with real skills.

Now we have computers that can make Scarlett Johansen out to be badder than Bruce Lee.

But, that's what the kids of today relate to... their parents tell them that they're special and invulnerable, so they want heroes that they can relate to.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

HULK wont happen

DEADPOOL wont happen

So your list is down to one.

Boom

Superhero movies have been taking over the summer since about 2000....where you been?

Re: Too many superhero movies?

They dominate the box office now, so it's become the norm. I doubt it will be changing any time soon.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I don't care for the superhero stuff, but nobody makes me watch them either...

Still, I'll be glad when this cycle fizzles out.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I've just read this very same thing in the Guardian newspaper. I think it's quite simple, the numbers speak for themselves. At the momement box office records are being broken all the time, more people are going to the cinema, creating more jobs in the industry and elswhere, this in turn creates more revenue to put into other film projects that might not have seen the light of day!
Let's not forget , there are a lot of movies out there for all tastes. Not all of the multiplex cinemas are full of 'super hero'films !
So grab a large popcorn, sit back and enjoy ( while you can)!
For the time being they are here to stay , let's grab a large popcorn

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I would like some more original or lesser known material adapted for the screen but i do like some of the offerings of the Superhero Genre (who would of thought that would become an established term?!). For example, Spiderman, X-men, Daredevil and Thor. As well as the first Batman Begins.

I do feel this genre is only strengthening with the B and C list characters having films going into development. It's like they hit a goldmine with a secret audience, who are now able to come out into the light and revel in their geekness and for others to embrace a side of themselves they would once dismiss out of shame.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Seems to me you are right. There have been so many over the last few years it might be saturating the market. And maybe why you see somewhat of a down summer season.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I think there are too many superhero movies that are being released.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Good and superhero movies are their own genre it's like complaining that there are too many action movies

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Hollywood always seems go overkill on a specific movie Genre after a couple of films in the genre make huge bank.
Remember the flood of sci films back in the late 70's after Star Wars?
Or all the Spy films that flooded the screen after the Bond films were huge hits?
What makes the comic book genre interesting is that the two big generators of Superheros ...Marvel and DC Comics...are both owned by big studios (Warners owns DC and Disney owns Marvel) which means that the studios do not have to buy any rights for the charecters..they own them (except,in the case of Marvel, for those that other studios bought the rights for before Marvel started producing it's own films). And combined with the fact that they still make lots of money, the Genre is not going away any time soon.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

just don't go. I'm a big fan who has stopped going to most except for spiderman and cap, so yeah there can be a burn out, but why would I complain when I can just stop going?

It's also been a nice change of pace to the typical nihilism of our time. Super hero movies will keep reigning supreme until other genres catch on that values are popular.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Once upon a time I would have agreed with you. However, what I'm realizing is that people are looking at superheros as one particular genre, when in reality they are evolving into different genres. Marvel's coming out with Fantasy, tech thriller, Conspiracy, space opera, and heist. DC's coming out with Invasion-type. The only difference is we call them "superheroes" because no other type works. Did you see Frozen? Is Elsa a superhero? She fits all the main requirements. But no one would call Frozen a superhero movie. Is every action hero a superhero? Not all superheros have extraordinary powers. No one says "there are too many action movies." Is it something based on comics that's bothering you? What about Men in Black or Red? Heck, why don't we ban the novel itself?

The issue isn't that there are too many superhero movies out there--they've done a good job of diversifying themselves. The issue is we need a new term to describe the genre we're watching.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I disagree. I think most people have a good understanding that the superhero movies that have been coming out over the last decade can be classified as a "superhero" genre. I think most people would term superhero movies as any movie that claims a character that started out in the comic universe, whether as a main character or as a side character. If we accept this as our definition, then we of course can't count Elsa as a part of the superhero genre.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I agree that the comic universe is a good way to start it, but even that causes problems. A lot of works are adapted from comics that we wouldn't consider Superhero (Men in Black comes to mind).

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I'd say genres are pretty flexible to begin with though. I mean, if you look at some of the classic westerns and then compare them to Cowboys and Aliens, can you really say that they're all part of the same genre? I'm not even sure how much genres actually help us in appreciating films.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Blade and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles too.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Well, they are fun to watch and it makes money if done right.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

I know this thread was from a decade ago, but I want to say that at this point we may as well consider pretty much any action movie nowadays superhero films even if it doesn't have any superheroes in it since most of the main characters tend to behave and do the same stuff that superheroes do. If a "superhero movie" is about a guy who have super powers, you can make an argument that Fast and Furious movies are superhero movies too with the feats pulled off in those movies. The latest one had even more over the top stuff than the last few films. Hell, even John Wick is like a superhero at times. Even Mission Impossible could be considered an unofficial superhero movie, given how superhuman Ethan Hunt seems to be.

Re: Too many superhero movies?

Still a very relevant question.

My own answer is 'yes'.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaay to many superhero movies. But we all know the ONLY real superheroes are Peter North and John Holmes.
