Things you may not know about Myrna Loy

(Inspired by a post by @Lilith.)

Although she often played the "perfect housewife," in real life she was anything but that. Especially in her efforts during WWII, when she took a year off from her career to serve as assistant to the director of military and naval welfare for the Red Cross. She was so fiercely outspoken against Adolf Hitler during the war that her name appeared on his blacklist, which resulted in her films being banned in Germany.

She also helped run a Naval Auxiliary canteen and toured frequently to raise funds for the war efforts. And throughout the 1950s, she assumed an influential role as co-chairman of the Advisory Council of the National Committee Against Discrimination in Housing. And in 1948, she had become a member of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, the first Hollywood celebrity to do so.

An amazing woman, without question. And I include her wonderful performances on screen as part of her magic, whether she played a perfect housewife role or not.

She never won an Oscar or received a nomination, not even for her favorite role in The Best Years of Our Lives. But, finally, in 1991 she did receive an honorary Oscar, which was long overdue and well-deserved, to say the least. Hooray for the great Myrna Loy!!
