Star Trek: The Next Generation : The second episode of the first season is soooo dumb

The second episode of the first season is soooo dumb

If alcohol causes you to just goof off when you're facing imminent death then you're the biggest lightweight ever. The script looks like it was written by someone who has never been drunk before.
Even in a near-black out state I'm going to freak the f--k out if someone pulls a gun on me or a car starts careening toward me.
....Maybe it's my Irish American heritage, but I think that MOST people would have a similar reaction.
Obviously you're going to be more relaxed in such situations, but the idea that everyone on the ship just let everything go to hell is insane.

Re: The second episode of the first season is soooo dumb

That's the TV standard for you, though.

Remember, this show was made during the time when the War on Drugs was just getting into its full swing. This is the era of the "This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs" commercials and endless PSAs about the dangers of substance abuse. It's why they have that ridiculous anti-drug episode later in the same season (Symbiosis), where Wesley Crusher gets a lesson on substance abuse from Tasha Yar and it's all played straight.

It is only in the more recent years that the effects of drugs and alcohol have been played a little more realistically on TV and in movies (and even then, it's still kind of hammed up).

So it's not that the writers didn't know what being drunk was like. It was more that the censors and executives didn't want to portray a realistic drunk person. Some faceless studio boss gets to have their vision played out and the rest of us (the cast and crew of the show as well as the viewers) get to roll their eyes and think, "Jesus Christ, have these people ever eaten been in the same State as a drunk before?"

Re: The second episode of the first season is soooo dumb

I don't know. I mean just the other day there was a guy near to where I live that died out in a field with his crack pipe in his hand.
So I think people wasted on drugs or whatever can be totally out of it.
I think they would just let the shop fall apart around them.

Typing on the phone is even worse with a cast

Did you see those two parents passed out in the car from an overdose while their child was in the back seat, Nak?

Re: The second episode of the first season is soooo dumb

It is a bad remake of a Star Trek The Original Series episode

Re: The second episode of the first season is soooo dumb

Yeah they probably shouldn't have had Data be affected as well. That was pretty dumb. Sure maybe the weird water could affect his systems in some way (short circuits, etc.), but to be the same way that it affects biological organisms and makes them drunk. No.

Re: The second episode of the first season is soooo dumb

True, but those same writers also couldn't think of using the repulsion beam directly on that big chunk of rock flying at the Enterprise.

True, but those same writers also couldn't think of using the repulsion beam directly on that big chunk of rock flying at the Enterprise.

It looked a lot like rock but since it came from an exploding star it should have been a mass of plasma. The repulsion beam should have worked on plasma as well as rock.

So the writers saved the ship by throwing another ship at the plasma to slow it down and gain some time. Thus a ship was sacrificed to save the Enterprise because the writers couldn't think of using the repulsion beam directly on that big chunk of rock [plasma] flying at the Enterprise.

Or maybe one of the writers did suggest using the sensible course of action but the other writers didn't agree to write it into the episode for some strange reason.

Re: The second episode of the first season is soooo dumb

It was more exciting this way, I think.

Re: The second episode of the first season is soooo dumb

Agreed.

I'm watching the whole series, and I'm currently on Season 2, Episode 4. As the Han Solo knockoff character walks down a hallway with Data he asks, "have you ever been cold?" "No." "Hot?" "No." "What about drunk? did you ever do that?"

"From alcohol? That's not possible for me, sir."

Soooooooooooo weak.
