Kung Fu Master from 1984. 🙂

I think you made this up.

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

I didn’t. My Uncle Adrian told me that he was in a TV shop one day in 1984 and saw this arcade game by Data East and it BLEW HIS MIND!!

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

Kung Fu Master was the first PROPER arcade game. They had arcade games before that but it was just shooting lights pretending to be deers and wacking mole games, things like that. 🙂

I'm pretty sure Woolworths had a Pac-Man competition on Arcade throughout the UK before that Bobby.

From memory that is

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

That must have been a Japanese run event then because Pac-Man didn’t come out here, just in Japan and parts of the America’s. 🙂

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

I'm not at the computer just now and so can't look it up Bobby but I'm fairly certain there was a big cash prize and fanfare associated with it

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

Well from how I understand it Juan, Pac Man was the first arcade game released in Japan, Donkey Kong was the first arcade game in America and in the UK we had Kung Fu Master. 🙂

When you manage to get online, look that up and you’ll see.

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

I could be wrong Bobby, my research didn't pick up on any Woolworth (UK) competitions with a cash prize but it did find that Pac-Mac was available for the home games console the twenty six hundred from Atari in 1982 and so could have found its clout from there

I'm pretty sure I met a couple of blokes who were high rollers on the Pac-Mac scene back in the day and they were both in the competition at Woolies hoping to each bag it

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

It was definitely Kung Fu Master as the very first arcade game ever released in the UK, Juan. The first proper one anyway. I know because my uncle Adrian remembers seeing it and being utterly wowed and can you blame him?

Just imagine being inside an amusement arcade in 1984 with the dull shooting games where you just shoot lights on a static screen, wacking mole machines, bandits and pinbore machines…only to turn a corner and see THIS!!!

Ah dunno Bobby…that sounds a lot like an 8-bit soundtrack to me and there were better back then like Return of the Jedi:

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

But that wasn’t released in the UK until 1987. All we had in 1984 was Kung Fu Master and we were happy with Kung Fu Master. What was the alternative? Going and getting another gift egg from the ‘would you like a present’ parrot.

I don't know Bobby. I remember arcade games before 1984 quite vividly.

Granted they got much more popular afterwards and I don't know where you set the precedence for what an arcade game is but they were about before 1984 in the UK Bobby

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

Well…..I trust you Juan, plus others in this thread also seem to disagree with me. Perhaps you are right then.

So where does that leave my Uncle Adrian? A liar, a pretender, a spinner of silly yarns!!

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

I’ve spoken to my Uncle Adrian Juan and he insists that Kung Fu Master was the first arcade game to be released in the UK. I however have looked it up on Wikipedia and it was actually the first beat em up brawler, not the first arcade game.

Why does Uncle Adrian lie? ☹️

My favourite ever arcade game though well it has to be Time Dinosaur. Remember with the gun shooting dinosaurs in prehistoric times and using the pedal to hide ‘RELOAD!!’. 😊

I preferred Operation Time Wolf which had the pedal and you ‘RELOAD!!’. 😊

Shooting games need a pedal or how are you expected to reload?

I never played Virtua Cop Bobby

In fact beyond Tekken 2 and Goldeneye I didn't play any games at all then

Well, maybe a little Tomb Raider, but I was seeing a girl who stylised herself on the character of Lara Croft somewhere in there

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

I have to agree with Juan on this one. After a small amount of research it would appear as though the UK got pong in 1973 and then breakout in 1976. Neither of these two caught on leading to speculation of arcade games becoming a fad. However, in 1978, the release of space invaders cemented the arcade as a popular destination for teens and young adults in the UK. PAC-MAN was certainly a "craze" there as well.
🙂👍

Re: The first arcade game to have been released in the UK was……

I don't know if Pac-Mac made it straight to the arcades in the UK but it certainly had a place in them along with Spy Hunter, Asteroids and Space Harrier Concur

If you think about it, Bruce Lee films were popular in 1984 and The Karate Kid had just come out. It was no wonder that people loved Kung Fu Master as much as they did. 😊
