Star Trek: The Next Generation : The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

Yes it can only mean one episode - answers on a postcard to Starfleet command.

Re: The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

Wasn't that the DS9 crew that got sent back to the Troubles With Tribbles episode Ewaf? You know The Trials And Tribble-ations episode?

Re: The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

No it was STNG in the episode 'Justice' which was just a remake of the TOS 'The Apple'

Re: The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

Very astute observation Ewaf indeed it has a lot of similarities with 'The Apple' although Picard doesn't seem to believe in breaking the Prime Directive for a "stagnant culture" (unlike Kirk) other than saving Wesley from probable (and enjoyable)death.I have the same issues with 'The Royale' which feels like a dull rehash of TOS 'A Piece Of The Action' or 'Where No One Has Gone Before' or 'The Naked Now'.

Re: The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

The first season was a real struggle - uneven in the extreme.

Yeah I know that was Gene's influence,I probably get stoned to death for saying this but like the first two seasons of ENT a lot more than the first two seasons of TNG.

Part of it was the pajamas that they all wore.
They looked like "onesies" that you put on babies.

Re: The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

Enterprise was problematical. I never really got the impression that they were really out there until the better written and plotted later series

The Suliban subplot was awful - and so was some of the early acting.

Re: The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

That was because of the management interfering(which did not understand Trek or SF) with the initial plans and ideas that Berman and Braga had for the series.Once the series got more in that direction it got really great, plus it had at least conflicts between characters and within characters(Archer is a great example of that). The Suliban plot(and Temporal Cold War) was one of the things the management wanted because they wanted a time-travel element in the series and they wanted more tech, while Berman and Braga were quite fed up with the time travelling and 24th century technobabble and wanted a more low tech more character based series. But during season 2 it picks up nicely with episodes like Dead Stop,Singularity,The Catwalk,First Flight,Stigma,Carbon Creek,Cogenitor,Minefield, Regeneration(which made the borg menacing again, besides it being forced upon the production by the management) and the Andorian story arc.

Re: The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

Yes could have done without the time travel nonsense. The low tech approach is what I wanted - but there was no excitement when the Enterprise launched- just a feeble phuut when it went into warp drive.

First Flight was decent as it at least it tried to show the history of warp speed travel and early astronauts.

The first series just seemed to look for continual excuses to bring advanced technology into the frame which ruined any attempt to make the series feel as though it was part of the early - dangerous days of deep space exploration.

Even by the 23rd century crews were still frightened by advanced aliens (The Corbomite maneuver) but in the 22nd century they just seemed to take it for granted - there was no sense of fear or wonder.

I was disappointed when Enterprise was cancelled as it was finding its feet - and as most fans know the last episode was unforgivable.

From a very revealing interview with Berman and Braga on Enterprise I have seen it was actually those introductions to future tech episodes that were done because the management wanted this thinking it would loose the TNG era fan base with the low tech approach(B&B didn't even wanted to have a transporter). And it might come as a surprise that First Flight and Broken Bow were to be the set up for the entire first season which was to have taken place on earth like some sort "The Right Stuff" but that didn't go to well with the management which wanted to go to space as quickly as possible. It's actually a miracle how much of the original ideas of Berman and Braga actually got on the screen if people had known how much of a struggle with the suits behind the scenes was going on.In fact I would go as far as to say that people unjustly blame Berman and Braga for a lot of things while they should have given them some slack considering the things they had to deal with.

I agree season four was one of the best Trek seasons and if we consider what they had planned for seasons 5-7.Stories about the origins of T'Pol,the foundation of The Federation,The Federation-Romulan War as was described by Spock in 'Balance Of Terror' damn it felt so wrong that it got canceled while under way of being one of the best Trek series. As for the finale they should have cut out the Riker-Troi stuff the last segment with the Three captains and the Three Enterprises was memorable.

Berman and Braga also mentioned that they had wanted to wait a couple of years with releasing a new Trek series after 15 years of Trek with TNG,DS9 and VOY they feared that there was going to be a 'Trek-fatigue' but the management had actually wanted the series to start during the last two seasons of VOY B&B managed to hold that off until VOY was finished.

Re: The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

Regarding tech there are fans who just want Trek to continually expand the technology envelope - but to me sleeker looking ships and rows of flashing lights aren't interesting.

How future crews deal would have dealt with future technology which is 'just around the corner' from where we are now is.

I liked the film 'The Right stuff' and that's exactly how I wanted 'Enterprise' to be. Crew dealing with new and dangerous technology - with the inevitable accidents - although there would have been no need for a Priest arriving at the door to give out bad news.

The only time I felt excited in perhaps the first few episodes was when they were describing how they could get to one of the outer planets and back in just a few minutes - plus how just a tiny piece of matter could punch a hole in a fast travelling ship.

I didn't know that there were advanced planes for further seasons - but they certainly sound interesting. However because by then advanced technology had been introduced into the series it would have been difficult to pull off the Federation - Romulan war featuring - quote 'primitive atomic weapons and craft'

Re: The day the STNG crew got stuck in a 1960's episode

Devil's Due. From the easy disabling of the Enterprise to the sexual interest of Ardra in Picard and Data's prominence as an impartial (and thus logical...) arbitrator, the episode is practically ripped from TOS.

Yes is was fun but not great and its earlier origins are clear as it was originally for Star Phase 2

Not to me! I only watched TNG, so everything was brand spankin new, baby!
