Sports : The Olympics looks pretty grim this year

Beijing is one of the most polluted cities in the world. I hope our athletes don't come home with lung problems.

I just FFWDed through over an hour of biathlon. ¿Nordic skiing? ¡Meh! The ski jump is the only Nordic event I'll watch. I find skiing on flat ground very boring.

Skiing on flat ground is boring but cross country skiers are among those with the highest VO2 max so they are at least doing something athletic rather than sliding down a hill. That makes it marginally interesting which is better than most winter sports.

I find most of that **** boring because when you have seen a few skiers or snowboarders or speed skaters, sledders etc do a few runs on a track or down the hill you have seen it all.

The only one that has any variety of any kind are the figure skaters but even that can get boring when you see how limited they are with each one doing similar moves as part of their routine.
At least they all don't do them in the same order.

I only find any of these sports fun to watch if there is a particular person or team I am rooting for, except for judged sports which I have no interest in at all. With the sledding I would like to see them toss a sack of potatoes down the track just to see how different it looks before I take an interest in it.

I just don't have as much interest as I used to.
So I am hardly watching compared to past ones.

As others brought up who lost interest, it is all pros when it was more exciting when it was amateurs.
They are right.
It ain't the same excitement and it does give some, like our basketball team, unfair advantages.

That Shaun White can still qualify either means he is that good, which is possible, or the pool of talent isn't very deep, which might be the case since so far no American men have medaled in snowboarding. There is still one event left though.

Outside of hockey and snowboarding the rest is pretty boring.

Do you watch the winter Olympics?

Moreso than the summer games. The only thing I skip is Nordic except for ski jumping. You'd go nuts if you had to watch every participant in every event. I don't think I'd watch it without a DVR–too much FFWD through parts I don't care to see. In some events, I limit my scope to certain countries unless the FFWD DVR picks up something interesting.

The ski jump park is built on the grounds of a former steel mill. Those are actually cooling towers left over from the steel mill, not from a nuclear facility. Be that as it may, yeah, still pretty grim-looking.

Wonder why they put it there out of all places?
