Action and Adventure : The Mechanic

The Mechanic

Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) is a 'mechanic' - an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets. It's a job that requires professional perfection and total detachment, and Bishop is the best in the business. But when his mentor and close friend Harry (Donald Sutherland) is murdered, Bishop is anything but detached. His next assignment is self-imposed - he wants those responsible dead. His mission grows complicated when Harry's son Steve (Ben Foster) approaches him with the same vengeful goal and a determination to learn Bishop's trade. Bishop has always acted alone but he can't turn his back on Harry's son. A methodical hit man takes an impulsive student deep into his world and a deadly partnership is born. But while in pursuit of their ultimate mark, deceptions threaten to surface and those hired to fix problems become problems themselves.

Stay away from my son, Kirk.

Re: The Mechanic

Don’t forget the original….

Re: The Mechanic

Bronson would have been a better choice, honestly.

Re: The Mechanic

Statham’s Mechanic is better at action but Bronson’s Mechanic is better at planning. The first 10 minutes or so is Bronson wordlessly planning and setting up an explosion in such a way that it looks accidental.

Re: The Mechanic

I'm not one of those vigilante law and order types generally, but I do like Bronson.

Re: The Mechanic

He’s definitely not law and order in this. Winner wasn’t a good director but this is one of his better ones. That said, I liked it more when I saw it as a kid than I do now.

Re: The Mechanic

I forgot about this picture. I should have been closer to the camera for it to work properly but we were in a hurry.

Re: The Mechanic

Stamm, you should be one of those "media people", a celebrity who's a celebrity because they're a celebrity.

Re: The Mechanic

He certainly looks as if he could have his own show as a Mr Bean type character. Perhaps a dim witted cartoonist.

Re: The Mechanic

Did you just call Stamm "dim witted"?

Re: The Mechanic

Nope, a character that could make him very, very rich.

Re: The Mechanic

At first I was thinking of "The Machinist". Seen it?

Re: The Mechanic

"The Machinist" is an excellent movie. But gawd, that skeletal pic of Christian Bale is frightening. How did he even emaciate himself to that point? Or is it special effects?

Re: The Mechanic

If I recall correctly, Bale said he was on a diet that consisted primarily of Jello. I think he lost 70 pounds for that role. He's always been one to throw himself into his roles, and physically morph his body completely doing whatever it takes.

Re: The Mechanic

Seriously though, that's extreme.

Re: The Mechanic

It's definitely one of the most extreme body transformations I've seen. More extreme than Matthew Mac's for Dallas Buyers (which I still don't think he ever truly recovered from…and I know what a fitness fanatic he is. He's still very fit, but he maintains that gaunt appearance to him).

Re: The Mechanic

It's been awhile since I've seen "The Machinist". But I suppose that make-up artists played some part in Bale's transformation.

However, his "gaunt appearance" still haunts him. That's a tribute to Bale as an actor. I'm surprised the film won no Oscars. But maybe I'm not surprised because the movie may have been to artistically austere for the Academy!

Re: The Mechanic

It hurt to see him in that film. I was genuinely shocked by his appearance.

Re: The Mechanic

Yes, the pic Lilith posted above shocked me as well.

Re: The Mechanic

The first time I watched it, I'd gasp audibly at his appearance almost every time the scene changed. He was scarily emaciated.

Re: The Mechanic

It's been about 5 years since I've seen it. I need to give it another watch.

That's right. I can watch it on filmboards!

Re: The Mechanic

While Gary Oldman is my all-time forever most perfect #1 favourite actor, Bale is a close second for the same reason. He changes himself and embodies whatever role he's doing. He changes his body, he's exceptional with accents (like Oldman, who's never repeated one and has a good ear for them)…and until Bale came along, I didn't think anyone could come close.

Bale has shown himself to really immerse himself and simply "become" - whatever that means, and whatever that takes. Something else they both have in common is people tend to not approach them when they're "in their zone" because they can be very snappy. They ARE the character.

Bale can be a beefcake, and a scary psycho-creepfest all wrapped up in the same skin.
