It's a Cornell Woolrich story. That's why there is no twist. My guess is that most film profs prefer Woolrich over Agatha Christie for that precise reason - he couldn't come up with a twist to save his life (except in Black Angel, which would probably never be shown in any film course), while Agatha Christie could.

I was startled. I thought the premise of the movie was that Jeffries was a bit deranged from his long confinement to home. But he was right!
