Stupid computers keep you from renaming and moving files

Tell me I'm not the only person getting this problem.

Every now and then I try to rename a picture file of some kind, and my damn PC prevents me from moving it into a file onto my external hard drive. Or it'll stop me from completing the name of the picture or the folder. Or it just won't let me move the picture into the folder and give me an error message saying the name of this file is too long... and that happens even when I don't rename it!

Re: Stupid computers keep you from renaming and moving files

Are you running MS-DOS?

Re: Stupid computers keep you from renaming and moving files

do you have a bunch of long file names and in a bunch of sub-folders? ; i think Windows 7 etc has a 255-260 character limit or so and i think that includes folder and subfolder names along with the file name to as part of that 260 figure.

i would just see if you got a simple file in the root of your drive and then try to rename/copy/paste etc. is that fine?

p.s. i clean installed Windows 10 a while ago and all is good for me as i don't have issues here but i probably don't have too many characters when i rename or copy and paste files etc. but it appears with Windows 10 you can make it go beyond the usual 260 character limit. here is a little article on enabling it in Windows 10... https://mspoweruser.com/ntfs-260-character-windows-10/ ; i just checked it on my Windows 10 x64 Pro build 14393.187 and i see what that shows but i am leaving mine alone for now as the way i store files on my computer i don't have issues with that 260 character limit but i suspect some people might if you have a bunch of folders within folders and fairly long file names.

Nope. I had the same problem with Windows 8.0, 8.1, and 10. And like I said, I don't even have to change the name to get this problem.

Re: Stupid computers keep you from renaming and moving files

Weird. there might be a simpler fix but if you never clean installed Windows 10 yet i would do that first and see if the problem goes away as something might be out of whack on your computer which is why if someone has not clean install Windows there might be a chance random crap could turn up. at least if you did a clean install then you could be sure Windows is in good running order.

also, so you are telling me this happens even with shorter file names etc?

like say for example C:\test folder\filenamehere.jpg ; like when copying something like that to a external drive it will act up? ; i just wonder when it complains about 'file is too long' if that whole 260 characters thing is a issue.

but come to think of it... this might not help but it's still probably a good idea to do anyways is to make sure everything is intact on Windows 10 (assuming you got that on your computer?)... right click the start icon in bottom left area of screen and then select 'Command Prompt (Admin)' and after that loads up type in... 'sfc /scannow' (without the ') and hit enter and let Windows 10 check the integrity of the OS etc. it will take a little while to finish (maybe something like 5-10 minutes or so) but i just want to make sure that part is okay to make sure your core OS stuff is not corrupted etc.

if everything from that scan turns out okay you should see a message saying, "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

p.s. side note: they must have just released build 14393.222 for Windows 10 as i got the update a bit earlier. not that this matters for your particular issue though.

More like "DSCN****.JPG," which is whatever name the camera leaves me with.

Re: Stupid computers keep you from renaming and moving files

That was just a example from me and not the actual file names of the pictures.

but given what you said it should not have any issues copying and pasting (or cut and paste) from a camera to wherever you want the pictures at. like should not have any issues copying pictures from the camera to the computer's hard drive etc.

so just off the top of my head i would do that whole 'sfc /scannow' thing (this helps ensure Windows files are not corrupted which i suspect if they are weird things might happen) and if there is no issues there it might be a good idea to clean install Windows 10 then and get everything back up and running again with your drivers etc and see what happens. you could even try running a more basic error check on the hard drive if you want which is pretty quick.

p.s. i know clean installing windows can be a pain as it's time consuming but in some cases it's the best bet to fix your computer problems especially if you have not done it in years or have upgraded over the top of another windows installation etc. if you don't have a Windows 10 disc you can make one using Microsoft's official tool to download the ISO file and then use it to make a DVD or use that along with a program called Rufus to make a bootable USB drive. but doing this guarantees your computer is in good running order without any junk on it as it erases your hard drive and installs Windows 10 from scratch. but obviously, before doing this backup any important data you have first so that it's not deleted during the clean install of Windows. i am assuming you only got one hard drive in your computer as if you got more than one you can just copy the important data to the drive that Windows does not boot from and then you ain't gotta worry about data loss etc. i am sure you get the general idea. if you need more help with this ill post links.

Re: Stupid computers keep you from renaming and moving files

Do you get a problem with the mouse pointer freezing accompanied by a duh-dump sound
and or the file explorer crashing every time the mouse pointer touches a media or picture file?

That is some really nasty malware going around that has recently fallen into the hands of hackers.

And this incredibly dangerous stuxnet worm could be on your computer.
Keep in mind that all kinds of cyber criminals now have access to the very latest
new and improved versions of stuxnet NSA spy software.

And could use it to literally turn your whole life upsidown through identity theft, etc.
