Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog : Still find it sad…

Still find it sad…

Upon watching this again, I find it even sadder for Billy and Penny's fates that it wasn't Dr. Horrible's evilness that got Penny killed, it was his mercy. In fact, that's what makes it so upsetting... Billy could have walked up after freezing Hammer and blasted him... his plan done without any other casualties. But, the fact that he couldn't kill Hammer, and was thinking about Penny's opinion of him the whole time... too sad.

Re: Still find it sad…

captain hammer will save us from penny, i think that was totally the dealbreaker.

Re: Still find it sad…

I was not a fan of Penny. I could not see why Billy was into her so much. It is not like she was super attractive, she's kind of blah looking. Her personaility is not that great either, she's pretty bland.

I was more sad that Billy "died" to me and NPH's acting makes it all the more heartbreaking.

"So, you wrote a bad play and were molested, welcome to the theatre."

Re: Still find it sad…

Well if you think about it, it's like he lost her as soon as he decided to try to kill Captain Hammer--after Brand New Day he goes into crazy mode trying to turn his Stun Ray into the Death Ray and he's determined to give in to his evil side in order to get what he wants. And, in doing this, he thinks he'll win Penny's heart. He wanted to be evil so badly that he lost sight of the goodness he did have in his heart, and that goodness was what drew Penny to him in the first place. In getting what he thought he wanted, he lost the one thing he really wanted the most. It is a sad way for things to end, but it's poetic in a way.

Re: Still find it sad…

I have to hand it to the cast for pulling off this tragicomedy with such panache.

All the characters seem to have shades of grey:
1)Captain Hammer starts off as a self obsessed, shallow jock who becomes a little deeper under Penny's influence. Its ironic that her death made him a blubbering wreck.
2)Penny's started off as this idealized Mary sue until her tragic past explains her deep empathy for the less fortunate. She was also somewhat embarrassed by Captain Hammer's behaviour at the conference, and had earlier voiced her doubts about her 'happy ending';an ominous foreshadow if ever there was one.
3) Billy Buddy/Dr Horrible ineffectiveness as a villain stemmed from his identity crisis in the beginning, and seemed to find his ultimate 'calling' only when his deep seated jealousy pushed him over the edge into murder.

And to the OP: yes, the ending was sad. I think everyone will come away feeling a little depressed with each subsequent viewing.

Great job though.
Hope Whedon puts the sequel together soon.

I thought it was the death ray knocking him down that made him a blubbering wreck because it was the first time he felt pain and not the death of Penny.

Re: Still find it sad…

Agree with you, NobodySpecialishere: Captain Hammer was defeated for the first time in his career as a superhero and he didn't take kindly to defeat..or the knowledge that pain is painful. What an idjit to learn at long last that his plans weren't paramount in the world.

Hammer's blubbering complaints to his shrink were amusing to everyone who got the point.

Re: Still find it sad…

Captain Hammer lost. He felt pain and he lost, that's what turned him into a blubbering wreck. Dr Horrible won, all the fans began to follow him and Hammer lost for the first time.

Notice his actions led to the death of Penny? Hammer didn't notice nor care about her in the least. She was dying but Hammer ran like a hare without checking to see if anyone was hurt. Cowardly git.

Re: Still find it sad…

Yeah.. no offense. It was clear after the confrontation in the laundromat that Captain Hammer contined to go after Penny JUST to spite Dr. Horrible. He clearly said that to his face, "I'm going to get what you want".

I will say part of Horrible's downfall was his being unable to live up the the "here goes no mercy". Although it seemed no one really knew who he was. Penny should have seen him in Act II that he was Dr. Horrible, but somehow with him 5 feet away from her she never noticed? lol.

As for Penny being bland? Umm.. what did we really see of Penny aside from a nice tirelessly altruistic person who was kind of lost in the world.. who'd apparently gone from bad relationship to bad one.. although there was a moment when she DID see the good in Billy. The press conference was to me her finally seeing what a bloated jerk and blow hard Hammer was (and no I am NOT bad mouthing Nathan.. yeesh.. put your big pants on people. He was playing the role as it called to be played, a DOUCHE.. but he was still funny as hell).

I think had it not had the tragic ending. Penny might have ended up with Billy. But in the end he got what he was shooting for at the cost of what he wanted the most.

Re: Still find it sad…

I know this is clear to most, but people don't seem to point out the other tragedy behind him getting one thing and losing another.

But simply BECAUSE he lost that one thing, he gained another. It wasn't that he lost Penny, then turned evil because everything good in him was gone.

Bad Horse made a statement, Horrible had to kill someone. The media made it known that Horrible killed Hammer's G/f. With her death, it granted his acception into The League.

Whata origin story for Horrible though,
Most people in The League probably willingly took a life, or did whatever Horrible thing on purpose.
Whereas the life that granted Horrible a member, was entirely an accident, and sparked his inevitable Evil. He didn't just simply Kill penny and get in, he's in for more reasons than one.

on a side note.

Why is everyone calling Billy, Billy Buddy????

Buddy isn't his last name, it was simply a cute nickname for penny to give Billy in a sweet intimate moment between the two.

His last name isn't really buddy...
