Star Trek - A matter of perspective - plotholes (spoilers)

Mrs. Apgar claims Riker try to seduce and rape her. Riker claims Mrs. Apgar was trying to seduce him.

The episode ends without any resolution of this. Troi claims both people believe they're telling the truth.

Terrible plothole. Any explanation?

Re: Star Trek - A matter of perspective - plotholes (spoilers)

A very clumsy attempt at explaining why Troi couldn't tell who was lying.

Re: Star Trek - A matter of perspective - plotholes (spoilers)

But why would the wife have lied anyway? The episode gives no reason for her to. It might have worked if she was the killer but she wasn't.

Re: Star Trek - A matter of perspective - plotholes (spoilers)

My view is that both acted a little out of line, let things get a touch more out of hand than they preferred. When caught in the act, they each rationalized it internally as being "the other's fault" and made more extreme following Dr. Apgar's death.

Thus:
- Mrs Apgar wasn't cheating, Riker was forcing it.
- Riker didn't try to flirt with another man's wife - she approached him.

As such, neither was really lying, the truth was somewhere in between.

That is a massive chasm to reach a middle ground on. Trauma and deep denial could explian the wife's memory but Riker has more distance and no reason to remember anything that far removed from the truth.

*******
So you feel that Riker's was the accurate memory?
I always felt that Riker's was accurate.
I always figured, The wife was compensating in her mind because her husband was dead now and she felt bad.
But Riker was way hotter than her husband so who could blame her?😈
