Spinal Tap 4.5 Hour Workprint Review (Spoilers)

I only recently found out this workprint existed. I was lucky enough to get a copy of it and it took me a few days to watch the whole thing.

The workprint is alot of footage that was cut from the movie, but apparently, there is more than one version floating around. I saw a scene from a different version that was not in my copy and wasn't in the movie. It's an extended part of the Stonehenge argument scene where David explains that the monument was supposed to represent the birth of modern England and the band was supposed to walk through the monument at the end of the song. I felt that should have been left in the movie because it really enhances and explains why the monument was so important to the band.

Other scenes fleshed out the characters more. David's teenage son visited him and there was an awkward scene where David just couldn't deal with his son because he was into punk rock instead of metal.

Derek had alot more scenes or extended scenes. He was going through a messy divorce and he was constantly trying to keep the peace between Nigel and David.

There's a really funny scene where Nigel gets the limo driver high and the guy strips and sings to the band in his underwear.

There is a storyline where there was a cover band to open for Spinal Tap. The lead singer was a slut who slept with all the guys in Spinal Tap, except the drummer. She gave them all the herpes cold sores. And then they got rid of her and her band.

After Nigel quit the band, Jeanine actually brought a new guitar player into the band. David and Derek hated him. He played one night on stage with them and it was bad. I think it was cut from the movie because it just wasn't funny enough. Also, David thought Jeanine might have cheated on him with this guy.

Toward the end, it's much bleaker and more depressing where David and Derek talk about this being the end of the band and that they'll be doing different things in life after this one last gig.

The workprint ends the same way the movie ended with Nigel coming back and the band tours Japan.

Most of the rest of the scenes are just extra time killers, extended scenes. Alittle too much of Jeanine's astrology stuff. Nigel watching a cartoon. A scene of how Derek was in a movie and he shows a clip of it. There's also a scene of how Derek got that cucumber for his pants. The scene where the band can't find the stage was longer and much funnier. They were lost so long that the fans all went home.

The workprint has horrible video quality. It's grainy, out of focus, bad lighting, poor sound. It's not clean like the movie at all. It makes it a hard watch. But it was very worth watching. I felt it made the band feel even more real than in the movie, and I really enjoyed seeing the extra footage. There was alot more focus put on how the band had lost their popularity and were on a downward spiral. The tone was much bleaker than the movie. I wish I had known about the workprint years ago. It's still floating around online if you want to sail the seven seas to find it. It's worth seeing if you always wanted alittle more out of the movie.
