Beauty and the Beast : Something that's always confused me…

Something that's always confused me…

During the scene where Gaston locked up Belle and Maurice and wanted to raid the castle; anyone confused with Maurice when he suddenly sympathizes with the Beast? I mean, the Beast did kidnap his beloved daughter who took his place as prisoner... presumably forever. Even if Belle told him that the Beast "changed," it still doesn't make much sense. Why didn't he want Gaston to raid the castle and kill him? One would think he'd want to take revenge on the Beast for what he tried to do. Is it a minor plothole, maybe?

That said, I hope they touch more on it in the upcoming live action movie...

Re: Something that's always confused me…

Belle did say that he was no monster and that he was kind and gentle and wouldn't hurt anyone. The reason that the Beast imprisoned Belle was because Maurice trespassed on his property and he did eventually release her. Being her father, why wouldn't Maurice take her word for it?

Re: Something that's always confused me…

That is a good question, it must be for the love of his daughter is my guess, but your guess is as good if not better then my guess. I have never thought about this, and I bet if he knew that he would have made his daughter very sad, and would never forgiver him for this. But neither one of them were aware of that he really was a prince that had a spell cast on him, and the only way that he could break the spell is to earn the love of a girl before the last pedal fell, then the spell would be broken, if not he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time.

Re: Something that's always confused me…

well, the Beast has released Belle, wheras Gaston is trying to have maurice sent to a lunatic asylum - that probably is enough to convinve Maurice that he should support the Beast.

Re: Something that's always confused me…

This is why I think 'Change in Me' provided an important bridge in the stage version, because it makes Maurice's going along with the "Beast is kind and gentle" rationale more plausible. He's the kind of guy who would probably take her word for it anyway, but the song helps the audience along in understanding it - and he seems to come to the conclusion that although her position on the Beast has changed it hasn't taken away from her love for her father, rather her love has just expanded (and then Gaston arrives and puts him in another precarious position, making it so that he's even less likely to side with the mob against the Beast).

Linda Woolverton also seemed to be addressing that specific plothole when she inserted the "I lost you once I'm not going to lose you again" line. Makes sense because he's only just been reunited with his daughter after a months-long separation and a near-death experience, and already his daughter is intent on charging into the middle of a heated battle between a "ferocious" Beast, magical objects, and a mob of angry villagers armed with knives, guns, and pitchforks (led by a guy who not only just tried to lock him up but also - in the stage version - just raised his fist at his daughter), so it makes sense he'd want to be with her regardless of who came out on top.

I bet you are right, even through I know he had a hard time believing it

Re: Something that's always confused me…

That sounds about right. The Beast released Belle and let her visit Maurice when he was sick and that also enabled her to save him from the cold.
