Life After People : So what would work best?

So what would work best?

Although everything will decay, erode, and eventually fall apart, what would be the best method/materials to build a structure to last as long as possible?

I think I heard them say Gold will last the longest

I'm not sure how it would work as making a building, but the material that would last the longest would probably be plastic. Doesn't it take millions of years to decompose?

Re: So what would work best?

Based on watching this show, I'd guess that if you want a structure (building) that lasts as close to forever as possible, you'd either build it from solid granite or hollow out a section of a mountain.

And try to pick your site as far away from any faults (earthquake zones) as possible, just to be safe.

(Of course, as long as we're fantasizing, if you build your superstrong structure on the moon, it'd last even longer, because there is no weather to slowly erode the stone, and no earthquakes. It'd probably last billions of years instead of millions, assuming an asteroid doesn't smash into it at some point.)

Re: So what would work best?

I just want to put this out there. I know this an old thread, but if you watch this particular episode, there is a grey haired man in a light blue shirt, and a dark blue jacket. Apparently in life after people, people don't tell you that your nose hair is sticking a half inch out of each nostril. It is in no way a mustache, the guy is clean shaven. His nose hair however, is out of control. I love this show. I find it very interesting, especially this episode with the talks about the Asian carp we in Chicago face every year. But seriously, this guys nose hair is a bigger threat to our world than any fish. It looks like he even put gel in it. He flat out scares me.

Don't take life, or yourself too seriously.

Re: So what would work best?

I gave this some thought when I first saw the show. I discovered that the best place probably already exists: the unfinished Hall of Records built behind the heads on Mount Rushmore. Mt Rushmore is carved out of a granite batholith that was created 1.6 billion years ago out of cooled magma. So it is obviously very very stable.

And The Hall of Records, though not living up to the original vision, does have a few artifacts stored in it.
