Re: Should I play organ or violin?

If you’re just talking about for fun, then I suppose it doesn’t matter. However, if the hypothetical question were: Which one am I the most likely to master well enough to possibly play professionally some day, then it would probably be the organ.

I get the impression that the violin is a very difficult instrument to master. I think that most of the famous violinists start off quite young. Below are some links that could probably better answer question. Of course it’s possible. But you would probably have to put many, many hours into it. Like all day, every day, for an extended period of time.

You have 2 “items” to deal with. The bow is difficult to master and it’s unlike anything else in music. This compounds it automatically.

It requires rosin (or resin) on the bow. The wrong type, the wrong atmospheric temperature or humidity, applied inconsistently, these all make an enormous difference. And, the bow hair has to be maintained. Don’t do that and you’ll have a terrible noise, not music.

The strings are incredibly important to the tone and they need to work well with your specific rosin.

It isn’t comfortable, at best. You sit at a piano, you loosely hold a guitar, etc. A violin has to be held in a way that allows the bow to hit the strings in a perfect manner to achieve anything resembling a nice tone. And, sigh, so does the bow.

No frets. Even the tiniest variance of your finger tips, and you will unintentionally get a flat or a sharp, rather than the perfect note you will always get on a guitar or piano, if you land anywhere within the “note area” of the fret or the key.

Violin tunes, by their very nature, are difficult. Classical tunes simply can’t be memorized as you would with most pop tunes. So, you have to read music and translate that to whatever your fingers are doing. And fiddle tunes, done properly, can require pyrotechnic ability. (Not as much room for player variance or improvisation in classical, whereas it’s encouraged in bluegrass.

Re: Should I play organ or violin?

I've also heard, I think, the oboe and organ are the hardest or piano. I don't play oboe.

It may be true. Maybe, if I stick with it, one day, I'll be 80 and look up to the skies and project a beautiful serenade and think to myself, "I'm old, I'm all alone, I'm not the best violinist, but at least I can play—"

I did go back to the beginning of violin, mainly for "intonation." I use a tuner and metronome when I practice each tune, alternating. I do it without in the end. I just need to get to doing it every day in the group home sharing a room. I might move to a new group home or something else even it seems suggested for some reason.

It sounds like your heart is with the violin. So you should stick with it

Maybe form that orchestra that you were talking about the other day.

Re: Should I play organ or violin?

Probably, if nothing happens.

I don't think I'll do a backup career.

I forgot to call online schools today, to see if they take FAFSA.
