Question about Toshiba Blu-Ray player problems…

My parents just moved, and while buying a TV and video equipment, they bought a Toshiba Blu-Ray player that the guy at the store recomended.

It worked allright, but we've encountered 2 problems.

1) I was watching The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011 version) with my mother, and during the opening credits, at one point there is a series of single-frame cuts that show the CGI Lisbeth closer and further away from the camera. The first time we watched it, the screen only registered about half of the single-frames, whereas the other single-frames just appeared as black screen. The second time I watched it on the Blu-Ray player, the whole scene was invisible, and all that I could see was a blank, black screen, as though the TV or player wasn't "registering" or displaying the flash-frames.

2) We tried to watch The Muppets and the entire time, the screen kept "glitching" for 1-3 frames (it looked like the picture suddenly got inexplicably blurry and had a "trailing" effect, as though the image suddenly shifted) before returning to normal. It happens at random intervels. (Sometimes only 1 time a minute, sometimes almost constantly) Also, the disc seemed to take about 5-10x times longer to load than it did when I watched it on my PS3.

Anyone have any similar problems or know any solutions? It isn't connected to the internet or anything.

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

Re: Question about Toshiba Blu-Ray player problems…

It sounds like your blu-ray player, and TV, are attempting to extract "3/2 pulldown" (interlaced video) from 24p (progressive, film) material. In 3/2 pulldown, as I understand it, the first 3 frames are progressive and the latter two are shimmering interlace. If your TV happens to be refreshing signal at the wrong interlace times, you'll see shimmering frames, or no frames at all.

Are you watching blu-rays through HDMI cable, or using analog component, S-Video/Y/C or composite? Is your TV a progressive-scan or older interlace (i.e. 1080i) model?

I would say HDMI and progressive-scan TV should solve this.

Re: Question about Toshiba Blu-Ray player problems…

We were actually using an HDMI and progressive-scan TV. It's just a crappy Blu-Ray player. I looked up the model on Amazon, and it's got a lot of negative reviews complaining about the long load-times, glitchy pictures, etc.

Re: Question about Toshiba Blu-Ray player problems…

Ah. Well, return it immediately! I'm sure wherever you bought it fron has a 30-day return policy. Get a Sony.

Bear in mind that Toshiba was the company who developed HD-DVD, the rival high-def format to blu-ray in the high-def disc "format wars" of 2005-2006. They're probably miffed that blu-ray won, and are now offering a crap blu-ray player out of spite, or to damage the blu-ray format's reputation somehow.

Re: Question about Toshiba Blu-Ray player problems…

It was purchased like a year ago. It actually doesn't matter, though, I had to move back in with my parents for a while due to financial strains, and we're using my PS3 for Blu-Rays. I'm going to buy them a new Blu-Ray player when I move out in the fall as a gift.
