Titanic : Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

When Jack is wearing the tux and eating dinner in the first class section, he is offered caviar by the waiter, "And how do you take your caviar, sir?"

Jack turns it down and says, "None for me, thanks. I never did like it much."

He looks at Rose jokingly, because she knows that since he's poor and moves around, he doesn't eat caviar.

My question is, why wouldn't Jack eat it to try it? Wouldn't he be thrilled to try an upper class food? Why turn it down when he'll probably never get a chance to have it again?

If he's a poor person who doesn't eat expensive food in his normal life, why not eat it when he has the chance?!

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Nice timing.

In an earlier deleted scene, Jack is talking to Rose, taunting her somewhat, about how she wouldn't last out in the streets because "there's no hot water or caviar". Rose tells him that she hates caviar.

When he looks at her during the dinner, it would have been a callback reference to that scene, which is why Rose smiles. With the scene deleted, it seems that they're smiling for the reason you said.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

In an earlier deleted scene...

I didn't know about that deleted scene, but...

if someone offered me "fish eggs," I'd refuse, too.

Just because something is considered "high class," it doesn't necessarily mean it's good. 😨

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Just because the food seems exotic or unfamiliar to you doesn't mean that it doesn'taste good. Cultivate, Children usually are "eww fish eggs"

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

To each their own. But I think it is disgusting tasting.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

You misunderstood, you said you tasted it and didn't like it, not that you flat out refused to try it. I am not fond of caviar after tasting it. I only eat it if it's being served and it is usually incorporated into an appetizer, not served by itself. I tried escargot despite being finding the idea somewhat unsettling, I tried it and didn't like it. I wanted to expand my food experience and not look like a classless commoner.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

I tried it and didn't like it. I wanted to expand my food experience and not look like a classless commoner.

Good for you.
That still does not alter the fact that there are a great many people in this world, to include those that are not just "classless commoners".... that dislike a food without even trying simply by the food's reputation.

Try getting someone to try Sashimi some time and just have them wrinkle their nose and go "Eeewww Raw Fish!"

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

What is caviars reputation? A highly sought after delicacy that's expensive? The same applies to sashimi, except that one is served raw with the risk of food borne illness, so that is understandable. Also, I am not aware of any people that I am familiar with that do not consume sashimi. So with that said my point still stands.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

The validation of a point of fact does not hinge upon you personally knowing someone who has done so.

The fact remains there are LOTS of people who refuse to even try it and think its nasty based only upon what ot is, raw fish, or fish eggs. Regardless of whether you know no one who has done so.

Do you personally know any of the Apollo program astronauts? No?
Then by your logic the moon landing must have been fake.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

That guy is unbelievable. "Classless commoner"? Really now......

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Yeah, I got a history with him.
I've called him out several times for just such lack of logic as he demonstrated here yet again. He takes it upon himself to stalk and harass me at every turn because I dont put up with stupidity and bs.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Yeah, I think I saw it. You'll notice how he gets really personal, insulting things like people's looks, living area, affluence, personal life in general, while you stick to the topic at hand? Never a good sign.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Do I? How have I gone off topic? Just because you don't like what I say does not mean it's untrue.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Wasn't talking to you. Move along, kiddo.

And there you go again.

Total assinine douchebag.

The very thing you constantly accuse and attack me for. Except I ONLY EVER direct it at individuals such as yourself.

Its called Psychological Projection.
re: Psychological projection is when humans defend themselves against their own unconscious impulses or negative qualities by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others. For example, a person who is habitually rude may constantly accuse other people of being rude. It incorporates blame shifting.

You.
To a T.

Sneer at people all you want, but notice, if you will, that you're the first one here who resorted to name-calling.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

I see that "lrdcharlton" has gone off the rails again.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

As they say (or used to say) about the infamous Titanic song:

"Change the station. I've heard this song too many times."

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

You CGsailor have absolutly no place to talk about ANYONE. You are probably the most hated poster on the IMDB forums, and for good reasons. The irony that you call anyone else a douchebag. You are the most delusional person I have ever seen.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Yes I am widely hated.

But not by everyone, not even a very large group.

A highly VOCAL MINORITY, which is always exclusively made up by fellow trolls and idiots such as yourself.

and again... Psychological projection.

I never argued that there weren't people who wouldn't eat it, I was saying that there refusal is something seen in children, classless and unrefined individuals. My argument wasnt cemented with my second to last sentence, that was merely a fact. You seem to be arguing the existence of people who against my argument of the type of people who refuse food they never had based on childish perceptions. The ones who act like caviar or Carpaccio is something off of Fear Factor, and like Jack, make themselves look like fools or common trailer trash.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

I tend to ignore you posts however this really has to be said. I'm not sure what went on between you and the other poster, but I have seen you on several Alien boards and Top Gun which really gives a solid idea of how others view you. I confidant to say that the majority of individuals that come across you view you as being something of dick. You are abrasive, condescending and an overall unpleasant person to del with. Lastly, you often talk to people as I you are an expert on everything. You cannot be critical of others that may posess the criticisms you speak of as you are the very embodiment of them.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

You clearly DON'T have a solid idea how others view me if you think the majority see me as a dick.

Yes, there is a large group that constantly attack me. But they are FAR from a majority. They are in fact repeatedly from the same small pool of usual suspects, people like Lrdcharlton here. repeatedly. over and over.
the same 10 to 15 individuals, and in one case.... about 20 to 25 sockpuppets of a SINGLE INDIVIDUAL.

That's hardly a majority of the many thousands who peruse and read through and respond on these boards.

Yes. I am abrasive and an ass, but not in general and not to everyone. But to people like lrdcharlton and others who are either teolls, conspircay theory retards, and select others posing absolute crap with the reasoning ability of a gnat.

To all others I am respectful even if I disagree.

It is from that pool of trolls and conspiracy retards, etc... that the haters that attack me invariably come from.

Lastly, you often talk to people as I you are an expert on everything

Actually no.
I don't.

The is a vast amount that I don't know and even in what I do know I am not an "expert" in a lot of it.

But here is why it APPEARS that I act like an expert in everything.....

Unlike certain others like lrdcharlton who speak on both what he knows AND what he doesn't know.... I only speak out on what I know.

If I don't know, I don't speak out. Or I will research it first before replying.

So one is hard pressed to catch me wrong on something.
That is not the same thing as Me thinking I know everything. Far from it.
Additionally, when I have on occasion posted erroneously and been called on it with supported facts, I accept it and adjust my knowledge. unlike idiots like Lrdcharlton who just continue to attack in ignorance.

So you know what... I couldn't care less what you think of me.
Plenty of others have written to express the exact opposite of your "solid idea on how others view me".

1) I don't express opinions as facts unless I know the facts to be true and have researched it.

2) I DO NOT speak factually about what I do not know.

This gives me the appearance of being "always right" to others, something I have NEVER CLAIMED.

Others tend to play armchair expert on subjects they know nothing about. This is stupidity on their part. I do not do that.

I do have a low tolerance of these sorts of people. Stolen Valor asshats who clearly dont know wtf they're talking about militarily.

Conspiracy nuts with a near zero understanding of science.

Trolls.

Yes... to those types I can and always will be a total *beep* I will do my damdest to slap them down. Hard. expose their ignorance and bullsh!t. and embarrass the hell out of them publicly.

But only those types.
Not everyone, and hardly the majority.

Coast Sailer's MO is to lamb baste the peoples who do not agree with him, hana

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

I found that deleted scene on you tube along with several others. Interesting stuff.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

That makes sense with the deleted scene context....but he should still try it! Now is his only chance!

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Exactly, how often does one get a chance to try beluga caviar? It made him look silly to deny it as they all knew damn well he never had before.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Not all rich people eat caviar. Rose doesn't like it and probably doesn't hide the fact. Not everyone (rich or poor) will indulge in a delicacy just because it's a delicacy. Some wealthy people would prefer a fast food burger over a pricey sirloin steak.

Such as Bill Gates being a big fan of McDonald's.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Don't be simple, my post did mot suggest all wealthy individuals like caviar, i was stating those who never had it but dislike it. He wasnt in a setting where he would have a choice of regular food,so preferring a burger or fast food is irrelevant.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

The question the waiter asked was "How do you like your caviar, sir?"

My understanding was that Jack's response - "No caviar for me, thanks," was a witty comeback to cover the fact that he didn't know what caviar was, or at least not how one should 'like' it. So instead of saying he didn't know and opening himself for embarrassment, he said he didn't want any.

Perhaps you should read the previous posts before you reply......

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Perhaps you should try to keep things civil.

I'm aware that there is a deleted scene that explains Jack's reaction more; however that scene is not in the film and so can be disregarded. I'm simply explaining my thoughts after seeing the film as it is presented.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to be uncivil, but there's a lot of that going around, y'know?

I think this is the best comment here.

Would *I* want to try it? No. Do *I* know what it means, "How do you 'like' it?" No.

Jack got out of it very gracefully.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

It think you're making assumptions that the script doesn't support.

Jack was poor and was always so; fact. But there's no prerequisite in money or real estate holdings required before you're allowed to try caviar. Jack was quite worldly and it's not out of the realm of possibility he had tried it and found it just as disgusting as I have (and yes, it was Beluga). Maybe it's an acquired taste, but just like liver, if I never have it again I'm fine.

Jack's response of "none for me, thanks. I never did like it much." tells me he has tried it and simply didn't like it, social graces be damned.

If the deleted scene mentioned above was used, it probably would have changed the meaning but it still wouldn't mean he never tried it.

Is very bad to steal Jobu's rum. Is very bad.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

That's exactly what I thought after seeing this scene (before I knew about the deleted scene). I always figured he'd tried it before somewhere on his travels and legit didn't like it so he said No thanks. Just because he's poor doesn't mean that he would've never had an opportunity to try it sometime in the past.

Re: Question about Jack being served caviar in first class

If he's a poor person who doesn't eat expensive food in his normal life, why not eat it when he has the chance?!

I must've been very wrong on why I thought he said that.

I thought he said that because he has actually tried caviar and didn't like it. I thought he was being honest. But most rich people do like caviar and he said it to be ironic or to make a joke and Rose laughed.
