"My life is over. I might as well dance with Johnny Slash!"

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

I gave it an '8'. There are some amateurish parts, but it more than succeeds where it counts!

The middle section is the most effective part. It is very disturbing as well as extremely sad. It has the feeling of utter hopelessness.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

I gave it an 8 as well. While it was low budget, it certainly left an impression.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

I've only seen this once in its entirety. I wasn't too impressed. I do love the remake.

Its The Hills Have Eyes - '77 that I love from Craven.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

There isn't one millennial horror remake that I can stand. To me, they are generic and completely interchangeable.

I've seen the following remakes.

Black Christmas
Friday the 13th
My Bloody Valentine
The Fog
Last House on the Left
The Hills Have Eyes
The Omen
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
When a Stranger Calls
Carrie
Halloween (I had to think of I had actually seen this or not, and then I remembered the little boy who played MM)

The 1998 remake of Psycho was also terrible.

I do, however, like the 1977 "The Hills Have Eyes" quite a bit. Without a doubt, it is technically more accomplished as well as more focused than LHOTL.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

I liked a few of those reboots on your list, I despised My Bloody Valentine, The Fog and FT13th.

The Psycho remake was experimental, but it really was pointless to make it 95% the same movie as the original.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

Of all the ones I listed, the Carrie remake would be my favorite because the basic plot is strong. At least I always thought it was a strong plot.

I always thought it was silly to remake Psycho the way they did. Sant's approach did his film no favors. It rendered the film anemic and awkward. And I find Anne Heche very unlikable.

The remake of Last House is all I have seen so I can't rate the orig.

I doubt that microwave ovens will work without a door.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

"8/10"

David Hess steals the show as lead villain "Krug". Christ, what a scumbag and lowlife! But an interesting character nevertheless.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

David Hess was very good in his role. He also wrote and sang that song where the girl walks into the lake, "Now You're All Alone". What a sad little song.

Phyllis is actually my favorite character. She was so brave. I hate what happened to her.

And Sadie scared me the most!

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

Sadie was kinda hot for a psychopath.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

A little trivia here:

She was once married to Richard Dreyfuss.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

Months before Jeramie Rain appeared as "Sadie" in Last House on the Left, she was in an off-Broadway musical production about Charles Manson and she played - you guessed it! - Sadie Mae Glutz (aka Susan Atkins). Coincidence?!

I wonder if the character in the movie was a homage of sorts to Sadie Mae Glutz?

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

I had no idea!

My guess is yes. Wes Craven and his crew may have found it amusing to name the character Sadie.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

8/10. I got the Arrow Video Limited Edition Blu-Ray, which came with a booklet, bunch of postcards and a poster which is hanging on my wall. It's got loads of special features and the alternate "Krug and Company" cut.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

Nice!

I heard that Martin Kove, who plays the younger cop (he's a cutie!) was asked to play the Krug character and Kove turned it down, saying it was too dark for him and he'd rather be the comic relief. But he said that he had a friend who would be perfect for the Krug role and enter handsome, intimidating David Hess.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

I heard about that!

Also, apparently the original script was much more violent and had more sexual content but it was toned down when they shot the movie. I really want to find that script and read it to see what it's like but I don't think it has been made available to the public.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

Highly disturbing and looked like it was made by amateurs. I've read that several of the actors regret ever being involved with it.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

I recently watched the remake and thought it was a pretty good story. I'm guessing it's a lot less gritty than the original though but I liked how it didn't go the way you think meaning it's the bad guys that get kick-assed

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

I give it a 7 out of 10. I have a huge problem with the scene involving the two nitwit cops and the toothless old black hag. It's a real dumb and annoying scene that feels painfully out of place with the rest of the movie.

Yes, this is really me.

Craven directs these parts rather uneasily, but his rationale was they served as a respite from the unrelenting bleakness of what was being done to the two girls. And I can appreciate that. And these scenes with Ida and the two bumbling cops did do that for me.

But a '7' is a more than fair score for this movie, imo.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

Sucked. Amateur and corny. Lauded for its supposed realistic depiction of violence, but it really wasn't. Its tone is confused. The original Bergman film is better. Virgin Spring.

Re: Please rate "Last House on the Left" (1972)

I agree with "amateur and corny" and the tone is confused, yes. But I wouldn't go so far as to say the depiction of violence was unrealistic, at least the middle section seemed realistic. It certainly was intense. It seems to come from an honest place.
