The One Show : Pathetic attempt to create new comedy duo

Pathetic attempt to create new comedy duo

Caught a recent episode of this because I wanted to see the feature on J.J. Burnel of The Stranglers, but first had to sit through 40 minutes of the most pathetic attempt I have seen in ages to create comedy since the recent Jasper Carrott comeback special ('The One We Shouldn't Have Made', I think it was called).

Shoved together on the couch were Alan Davies and John Barrowman, looking about as out of place together as a walrus in a leotard. Minute after minute were your hosts, repeatedly hammering together the words "new double act" like a thick child completely baffled by the whole square-peg/round-hole deal.

Of this new Abbott & Costello line-up meanwhile, you could not have found two people less interested in each other if you tried, nor would any viewer, including those who don't actually have television, have expected them to be. Both were there to promote their latest projects and could not have cared less.

Ironic given that the two regulars are about as much of a double act as a block of cheese sellotaped to a kettle. Who are they going to try and sandwich together next time, Jo Brand and the corpse of Bernard Manning?

This is what happens when television is made by marketing departments. Why don't they just have Basil Brush and Sooty host - at least then, we'd only hear one of them talk. "Welcome to another edition of The ONE Show boys and girls. It's a packed show, so izzy-wizzy, let's get busy. Boom! Boom!"
