Chris Rock : My man Chris bombing big time at the Oscars!

My man Chris bombing big time at the Oscars!

I never thought this would happen but Chris' opening monologue and subsequent lines are just falling flat! I think the setup for the black exclusion was good (calling out the shallowness among the black folks who were making the most noise yet highlighting the issue at hand) but Chris' execution and delivery just was painful and cringeworthy!

I'm not sure I can put my finger on it but the routine is too serious and cerebral and as much as I love Chris, he's not exactly an intellectual.

Sorry, I may be in the minority here (ironically I am a minority in this country although not black so that makes me irrelevant I suppose) ...but does anyone else feel Chris' is really struggling this time!

(by the way the routine where his kids sold girl scout cookies to the audience felt similar to the Ellen DeGeneres routine of ordering pizza and making the audience pay for it! that one seemed funny, this one seemed like a adaptation with black actors :))

Yeah I know! All the stupid social media hashtag topic pandering ruined the show this year!

Re: My man Chris bombing big time at the Oscars!

Whether he bombed or not is debatable. At least he spoke truth to power and made all those rich elitist liberal hypocrites take notice. Rock was right to say what he said, because Tinsel-town has always practiced tokenism in show business. For years in the fifties and sixties, Sidney Poitier was the major exception.

Yes, African-Americans have made huge strides since the sixties, and more of them have won Academy awards in the last twenty years than in the previous fifty years, but they aren't paid as much as their white peers and they get far less opportunities. There are countless thousands of successful Caucasian actors/actresses who have become millionaires even if they aren't household names both on the big screen and the boob tube just in the last decade or so. There are probably less than a thousand blacks who have done the same in the several generations since Poitier was the only black icon.

And minorities (both male and female) are more likely to be typecast, even if the majority of today's screen villains are angry white males. More angry white male roles mean more money and opportunities for the white actors who play those parts.

Beyoncé, Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington, Queen Latifah, Angela Bassett, and Halle Berry are the rare, grand exceptions, not the norm. Just think of the attractive, untested, deserving talent that is going to waste because Hollywood executives have to chase money and pander to the great unwashed by discovering the next Julia Roberts.
