Re: Mr. Roberts (1955)

One of my all time favorites!

"It is I, Ensign Pulver, and I just threw your stinkin' palm tree overboard!
Now what's all this crud about no movie tonight?"

Oh the love for that palm tree, eh?

I loved this movie, but it also made me feel enraged at times.

Enraged?

Re: Mr. Roberts (1955)

The Captain's misplaced anger during certain things.

I'm not former military so I don't have the experience you do dealing with COs and what that may entail.

Some was just very sad to me, and the drama.

Re: Mr. Roberts (1955)

But that was the whole point of the movie! The by the book asshole Captain
against the good guy Mr. Roberts. A good leader is not concerned about his own promotion. He's concerned about the welfare of his men. And it was funny watching what a jerk he was.

And Mr. Roberts was more valuable to the war effort, because he was good at what he did.

And the asshole got it in the end!

Re: Mr. Roberts (1955)

I know it intellectually. Just like how I think DIs should be as tough as they used to be "back in the day" which includes all the yelling and hosing.

Even in Band of Brothers, it took an asshole to unite the men.

I get it, I do. But as a civvie it can be so difficult to watch at times.

As a veteran, it usually makes me smile.

That scene was worth waiting for!

Re: Mr. Roberts (1955)

Anything Fonda is great! We also get an entire cast of greats in this one!

Re: Mr. Roberts (1955)

I really wish that you would learn to type in the name of these movies in the Search Bar at the top where the Filmboards Logo is. If you do that and click on the movie to leave your comments, it will appear in the trending bar. That is the first thing I look at when I come here. You will also see all of the threads, old and new. Please give it a try? It really is easy.

Re: Mr. Roberts (1955)

I don't always think about it. I do it sometimes, sometimes it doesn't occur to me.

I'm not synched up to my old IMDb account, and have no interest in reading posts from years ago by posters who I cannot have a current conversation with today, here, so that's probably one reason why I don't think of it in the same way that you do.

Re: Mr. Roberts (1955)

Ok. I didn't realize that one had to be synched up to the old IMDb account.
Please accept my apology. I will not presume to tell you how to post. If you are more comfortable doing it this way, by all means, continue.

Re: Mr. Roberts (1955)

@lilith: just saw it on TCM less than 2 weeks ago. I posted this elsewhere:
Still-entertaining film (I've seen it a number of times over the span of several decades) that seems to reveal interesting little tidbits every time I watch it. Today, for example, I just realized that Betsy Palmer, the actress who plays the head nurse, would later go on to play Mrs. Voorhees (Jason's mother) in the first 2 Friday the 13th movies, in 1980 and 1981. Another thing I just noticed is that both Henry Fonda and William Powell are really way too old to realistically portray their characters (Fonda was nearly 50 at the time - way too old for a Navy lieutenant junior grade, and Powell was nearly 63 at the time - way too old for a Navy lieutenant). But the interesting thing is, their acting was so flawless that their otherwise unrealistic ages didn't really seem to be noticeable. Anyway, nice to see this venerable film yet again.

Re: Mr. Roberts (1955)

Yes, excellent points.

Perhaps that's why we were able to suspend our disbelief sufficiently, - the acting was so superb.
