George Peppard : Major Stardom – Almost. Why?

Major Stardom – Almost. Why?

Robert Horton's editorial review for Vincente Minnelli's Home from the Hill on Amazon.com states the following:

"You can see from this film that Peppard is a dead-cert to become a major movie star, which he almost did--but then didn't, for a variety of reasons."

I've always thought George Peppard should have hit the big-big time. He's red-hot in Breakfast at Tiffiny's, How the West Was Won, The Carpetbaggers and others. I can't for the life of me see how he missed.

So what happened? Do any other Peppard fans know the "variety of reasons" Horton refers to? (Sounds a bit sinister.)

Re: Major Stardom – Almost. Why?

he had too much of a difficult reputation, he had it set in terms of his studio contract and financial backing, but he was too outspoken and his films werent making enough money, dont think many of his costars (esp the women) liked him very much either then

Re: Major Stardom – Almost. Why?

I love George Peppard on the A-Team, but he seemed like a jerk in his personal life. Didn't like having women on the A-Team. When the cast was invited to the Netherlands, he was the only one who didn't go after he found out he wasn't the only one invited. He seemed like a jerk. Too bad.

Re: Major Stardom – Almost. Why?

Interesting.I own almost all of his movie contracts and hadn't noticed that. Will have to re-read and see what that entails. Missed out on getting How The West..., Carpetbaggers and Blue Max. Those would have been really interesting to see.

Re: Major Stardom – Almost. Why?

I think he was a great actor, a gorgeous, beautiful man

who knows ...

Re: Major Stardom – Almost. Why?

I agree......

Re: Major Stardom – Almost. Why?

His admitted alcoholism was a key factor that negatively affected his career.

Re: Major Stardom – Almost. Why?

The thing that was apparently unlikeable about him in person also tended to read on screen -- which is fine when you're playing a jerk, but not when you're not.

Even when he was younger, he has this gross, smirky, a-hole thing about him I found hard to ignore. No matter what the role.

Not really. He couldn't act to save his own life.

Re: Major Stardom – Almost. Why?

I was a major star.
