Blu-ray Disc Releases : List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpart

List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpart

Everybody has different preferences. For me as a budding director I am looking for extra feature and content(making of, audio commentaries), even more than the look/audio. It pissed me off when I started seeing many bare back bluray releases of films whose DVD had more content. I think as the latest release whatever be the medium it should have new supplements PLUS all of the ones of the previous releases.

For example last time I checked a few years ago the Terminator bluray had less extra features than it's DVD release. I haven't checked if this has been corrected.

So can you help list any films whose bluray(or latest) release has less features than previous releases.

I don't even mind if they just package the Bluray with the older DVD with features. Example the To live and Die in LA bluray comes with the DVD which has Friedkin's commentary plus the making of doc. Mildly annoying to change discs but still better than owning and forking out separately for two disks.

So list all such cases in your knowledge

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

The Star Wars saga immediately comes to mind.

Don't get me wrong, the blu-ray set has plenty of great special features not found on the DVD set, but the DVD set has plenty of great special features not found on the blu-ray set.

The Episodes IV-VI original trilogy DVD set has the excellent Empire of Dreams documentary chronicling the rags-to-riches struggle of George Lucas and company to get the original trilogy on the screen and the success and accolades that followed.

The Episodes I-III prequel trilogy DVDs have a lot of great web documentaries on the creation of those films as well as deleted scenes.

However, the blu-ray set contains the wonderful vintage The Making of Star Wars, SP-FX-The Empire Strikes Back and Classic Creatures-Return of the Jedi documentaries as well as spoofs, a look inside Lucasfilm archives warehouse and some fascinating new interviews with all technical and creative personnel on the making of the films.

So each release of the Star Wars saga is a mixed bag. Therefore, to own all video content currently available related to Star Wars, you have to own both the DVDs of I-III, the DVD set of IV-VI and the blu-ray set of I-VI.

It's annoying to have to own two versions, to say the least, but at this point there is no other choice.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

It is indeed annoying.
To me bluray/DVD is a boon and a wonderful creation that justifies the art of cinema. To watch a movie on the big screen is one thing but to devour it in the comfort of your bedroom and then watch it's analysis and the creators opinion all the while relaxing on your bed....it is divine.

But then when you read about why they won't include all previous features in a definitive set....to simply make more money is sad.

At this stage I cannot fork out for the Star Wars bluray(which is in my amazon wish list at 80 bucks) and the DVD set. Because I love the saga but it is probably in my top 50 and to do so with Star Wars if have to do it with so many others.

What about the Alien quadrology. I love the bluray set which is filled with so many extra features but it'd piss me off if the DVD set had even one more supplement.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

For alien, the blu-ray set has more special features than the DVD edition, I believe.

- I just didn't want to be a loser anymore. -

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

Yeah the Alien set compiles all the extras from several different DVD versions. I think it might be missing some behind the scenes footage from the original Special Edition-only release of Aliens. The Alien 3 doco is also expanded from the DVD version.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

Terminator 1 and 2
Basic Instinct
Kiss of the Dragon
The Hills Have Eyes
Commando
Wild at Heart

Of course it depends which version.. sometimes one country's release will have more extras than any other version, or stuff will get reissued, for example Kingdom of Heaven and Robocop were first released on BD with no extras, but now they've been reissued with full honours.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

Yeah that's one reason I won't buy new films(not that I like that many). Tree of life I absolutely adored and the bluray would indeed be amazing but it doesn't have any supplements to speak of(the customnary trailer and a 20 min making of). In a few years we will get a full blown release with audio commentaries by the producers or Pitt. I'll wait.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

Good things come to those who wait! I too have gotten wise to the "initial bare-bones, then in a few years, the mondo deluxe special edition" studio release schedule, and have purposely held off buying certain titles because I know a more full-featured release will come later.

If that picture next to your username is you, rish, you're young, and time pokes by in what seems an eternity when you're young. When you get older, years will blur by faster. If you can afford and stand to wait, good things will come!

I'm waiting for 4 directed by Steven Spielberg films to be released individually on blu-ray that are currently only available as part of "The Steven Spielberg Collection", because I already own the other films directed by him that were sold individually, the transfers and special features are great, and I'm not buying them again:

Duel
The Sugarland Express
1941
Always

I'm sure there are new interviews with Sir Stevie in a supplement disc of the mondo box set, but that's OK, Steven; while I enjoy getting inside your head, I'll let your movies speak for themselves.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

Duel can be easily mail-ordered to anywhere in the world from JB Hi-Fi in New Zealand.. it's region free too.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

Ermagurd: Cool! I already own the Duel DVD and it has Steven Spielberg and the Small Screen, a documentary on all the episodes of TV he directed up to Duel, as well as a making-of documentary detailing Steven's process for completing the shooting of this intense, complex thriller in I believe only 12 days! Is this included in the region-free blu-ray?

Also, I'd like the choice to watch Duel in either its 4x3 TV broadcast format or its European theatrical 1.85:1 crop-matted version. Is this an option on the region-free blu-ray? The DVD is 4x3 only but it already looks pretty good. The blu-ray of course will show more of the grain and the organic quality of the 35mm film Duel was shot on, so a blu-ray upgrade is certainly desirable.

Here's the full technical specs.. looks like it's just the widescreen version but that's to be expected with Blu Ray. It has the same extras as the DVD version, nothing new though.

One thing i'm not sure on is which version it is. It would seem to be the same cut as the DVD version, which added about 12 minutes of footage that wasn't in the TV version, but omits a couple of short scenes as well.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

The OOP Anchor Bay DVD of Freaked was packed with extras. Not so the Blu-ray, which has NO extras.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

Raiders of the Lost Ark (the first and I feel the best installment in the legendary Indiana Jones adventure series)

The blu-ray has all the special features of the DVD and then some, but the visual transfer of the blu-ray has this yellow-orange teal throughout and its contrast is way off. The scenes in the Ravenwood bar at night are too dark and the highlights in all the daytime scenes are way too bright, washed out, have lost all detail. Compare the threads on Belloq's white shirt during the Tanis digs and the opening titles in the South American jungle in the blu-ray versus the DVD and you'll see what I mean. The whole opening South American jungle sequence is way too bright. That jungle sequence is SUPPOSED to be DARK. Listen to the making-of documentary: Director Steven Spielberg encouraged cinematographer Douglas Sloccombe to put in all the shadows he wanted, and he did. The DVD, minus its resolution limitations, is actually closer to the look of the original theatrical release of Raiders as I remember it in cinemas.

It's a crying shame, because the transfer of Raiders was done in 4K, an expensive process, so another transfer of Raiders likely won't be done for a long time, if ever. The true version of Raiders may indeed be buried in the sand for a thousand years like the Ark of the Covenant, the object of Indy's quest, in the film! Sadly, Raiders cinematographer Douglas Sloccombe was no longer with us on this Earth to supervise what the film should look like in this 4K transfer, and director Steven Spielberg signed off on the transfer apparently rather hastily, perhaps because he was involved in another project and didn't have time to really look at it.

Raiders' original sound designer Ben Burtt's re-design of the sound mix overall is pretty impressive. He added a few new interesting sound-FX, like water dripping in the surrounds discretely and two "phew!" extra darts shooting during the opening South American temple sequence, but I think the bass is over-exaggerated and John Williams' music is over-reverbed, sounds like the London Symphony Orchestra is performing his Raiders score at a ball game.

I hope the visual problem isn't in the original film negative, and transfer restoration artists take one more Indy whip-crack at properly transferring Raiders in the future. I'll then buy Raiders yet again, as an individual release, and replace the current disc in the current box set of the Indiana Jones Adventures with its new release disc if the transfer is done properly and all the special features from the current release are there.

This is only one of the greatest action-adventure/suspense/romance/supernatural thrillers of all time and deserves a proper presentation!

I'll give the picture of the blu-ray of Raiders 3.5 out of 5 stars.
I'll give the sound of the blu-ray of Raiders 4 out of 5 stars.

Close, but X doesn't quite mark the spot.

In comparison, I'll give the DVD of Raiders overall 4 out of 5 stars, 4 not 5 because of the picture resolution limiations of DVD and the fact that the sound of the DVD is a "pseudo-5.1" mix done from the original 1981 2-channel Dolby Pro-Logic soundtrack.

The rest of the Indiana Jones adventures look and sound great on blu-ray. They were apparently made from the same earlier 1080p Lowry Digital visual transfers used for the DVDs. Sadly, I feel the rest of the MOVIES aren't as GOOD as Raiders.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

Sorry but I dislike excessive commentaries and extras when watching a movie. In fact I have movies that commentary is longer than the actual movie. When everybody including the janitor gets 30 minutes to discuss the movie it becomes excessive. Nor do I need the director telling me what they meant or wanted when filming a certain scene. I can make up my own mind. So I don't watch the extras with the exception of the trailer.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

You are serious???!!!!!??? Then why bother buying a goddamn disc. Just download or stream the film. Besides, its not like there's no way you can disable that option, or..or...not click on it in the first place.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

I definitly don't watch the directors commentary while watching the movie but the other extras I will watch if they are not excessive. It really depends on the length of the extras.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

Haha wtf, no one's forcing anyone to watch extras. The only possible way it's going to do that is if the disc is badly authored and you play it on a cheap knockoff player or a PS2.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

House of Flying Daggers. I was disappointed that the audio commentary is not on the BD, although the movie audio is much improved.

Passion is just insanity in a cashmere sweater!

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

Ghost in the Shell USA Special Edition DVD, and Terminator 2: Judgement Day Ultimate Edition DVD.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

T2: Judgement Day Ultimate Edition is my favorite DVD and the only one I still have, but I believe this blu-ray (Skynet Edition) has most of the same features (minus some documentaries I think) plus a new audio commentary by James Cameron from 2003.

Re: List all DVDs with better(more) content than their bluray counterpar

I find it so stupid when certain blu rays that had only a barebones DVD release prior will remove the only 'feature' that DVD originally had; the theatrical trailer. If they can't be bothered to upgrade more than just the film quality when converting to HD they should at the very least remain consistent instead of downgrading and actually removing extras.

The Faculty, Teaching Mrs. Tingle and Fear are all some unfortunate examples of this frustratingly bizarre occurrence.
