John McCain stopped treatments for brain cancer

Respected and hated at times on both sides of the aisle. Currently not well liked by Trump and his supporters after McCain took issue with Donald Trump's insistence that McCain's POW status meant he was a loser. When he dies, I bet everyone will put aside their pettiness and acknowledge we lost a great man. He could have been president in 2000 if not for some dirty tricks by the Bush campaign. The world would have been very different. He received the Republican nomination in 2008, but never had a shot. How do you feel about John McCain?

How so? McCain is a neocon. We still would've invaded Iraq – and probably Iran too.

Re: John McCain stopped treatments for brain cancer

It is largely seen that it was Dick Cheney's influence that got us into Iraq. I doubt McCain would have made the same decision. He wouldn't have had Rumsfeld, he wouldn't have had a Wolfowitz. Even if an invasion had occurred, much of the failures in Iraq were in the execution of the war. There were not enough troops. We did not have any plan for the aftermath. We expected to be greeted as liberators, and about a thousand other fuck-ups. These were directly related to having a dumbass like Bush as president. Without those errors, Iraq would probably look a whole lot different today, as would the whole region.

Re: John McCain stopped treatments for brain cancer

John McCain is a good man, who always did what he genuinely believed was for the best of the country, whether you agreed with his position or not. He didn't do things for personal gain.

The word hero gets thrown around too easily these days, but I'd say he's the real deal. Total respect (even though if I lived in the US I'd probably vote democrat - lesser of 2 evils).

I think choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, doomed him.

John Kerry would have made an excellent President, in 2004. Voting Bush back in after his disastrous first term was an even more bizarre choice than electing Trump. Americans are inexplicably fucking stupid.

Re: John McCain stopped treatments for brain cancer

John Kerry is another war hero that gets treated with little respect. He should have won in 2004 (and may have…), but the Bush campaign turned his military record into a liability. The swift boat shit was shameless, but many Americans fell for it. It's a disgrace what happened to him.

Palin certainly was a disastrous choice, but McCain wasn't going to win anyway. It was a desperation move.

That, and his support for the Iraq war doomed him. Americans seem to prefer anti-war and non-interventionist candidates.

In 2000, Bush promised that America would no longer be "the policeman of the world" - he lied, of course, but the rhetoric sounded good at the time and helped get him elected.

In 2008, Americans preferred Obama, who opposed the Iraq war, over both Clinton (pro-war) and McCain (pro-war).

In 2016, Americans elected Trump, who opposed the Iraq war, over Clinton, who voted to invade Iraq as a US senator and pushed for greater US involvement in Libya and Syria as secretary of state.

Re: John McCain stopped treatments for brain cancer

I don't think the Iraq war was a major factor in deciding the 2016 election between those two. There was already a large anti-Hilary sentiment that she exacerbated with her actions, and which Comey pushed over the edge. Trump didn't win so much as HC lost.
