Medium : Joe is one of the best TV husbands

Joe is one of the best TV husbands

I'm re-watching the series, and man, I don't think there are many husbands (TV or real) that could have the patience and understanding that he has for everything they go through. (I know they have a rough patch later on in the series, but other than that. :P)

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

I keep asking for a Joe for Christmas, but I never get one.

I understand. Thank you for telling me. -The masked bandit

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

I agree 100%!!! Love their marriage. At least now lol can't remember if it stays this way

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

Noooooo. Joe was the worst. He whined every time he had to take care of the kids or do a bit more around the house. He was awful. I'm rewatching the first season now, and I'm already annoyed by his kvetching.

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

It's been a while since I've watched the first season, but as the seasons progress he really endures and is there.

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

Have you ever been married?
Good luck, you're going to need it.

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

I agree. Joe isn't perfect. He whines too much in season one when he's asked to pick up the kids from school (why can't they take the bus like other children?) and is at times skeptical and cutting about his wife's special talent, but overall, he's a great tv husband! People go on and on about how awful he is, but how many times has Alison stuck him with kid duty at all hours or not even shown up for dinner or bedtime? He's pretty laid back, all things considered. Mostly, he's supportive and a great co-parent.

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

^^Exactly what I was getting at with this post! :) I can't imagine many spouses being able to handle her abilities (yes, I know there were times he could have been more supportive) and sticking with them.

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

I don't really like Joe that much as a character - it annoys me that even after years of Allison's visions turning out to be correct, he is always sceptical about her abilities.

Although, I do feel sorry for him being woken up every night - I'd definitely be getting my own room if I were him!

Actually, I always felt Allison and Scanlon had more of a spark and would have preferred them to be together.

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

What spark?? His inability to smile and his numb and robotic reactions and facial expressions would keep any woman at arms length. And don't you remember how rude he was to her when her secret came out and how he called her toxic??
I'm surprised he managed to get with Lyn....

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

Lyn is a Mayor's office bureaucrat/spin-doctor.She's kind of that Real-estate agent type..
Recalling, that she softened a bit from her character's early scenes...

If not everybody could take Lee, not everyone is after Lyn's type for the long haul, either..

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

He's awesome.

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

I always loved Joe. He was realistic.
He was a good guy...but a real good guy.
As close to being the perfect husband as life would allow..
In fact, the whole family aspect of the show was the most real and the best handled part of the show.

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

Ah so I'm not alone!
He was so supportive and understanding... but also enough of a man with a backbone to not just let her get away with everything and put his foot down when he had to
Jake Weber was just a fantasy in every way as Joe... the perfect balance

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

i reckon he was a pretty good husband too, he had alot to put up with being woken up by Alison & her dreams practically every night! It was really weird seeing Jake Weber as a baddy in 'the Following' though, just didn't seem convincing as he was so nice in Medium!

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

he's an evil MFer in the last season of 'Hell on Wheels" I saw, too...also has a chain cigar habit.

there was also a movie years back which was sort of close to a remake of Pretty Woman...Jake Webber played the 'villain' or equivalent of it that Jason Alexander originally played in PW..

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

Agreed. I like the series a lot, and one of the great things about it is the positive role model Joe provides. He is patient and understanding, long suffering, and loving.

Sometimes the Alison character is written as a bit self centered, or at perhaps so consumed with her visions that she is oblivious to her husband's needs. She takes things the wrong way a lot of times; kind of strange for someone who is so intuitive. I guess they have to write one of the characters a little that way or the marriage would be too perfect to be believed.
Still, I wonder how the real life Allison Dubois feels about the way her character is portrayed in this series. I am watching S5E19 right now and there is a scene in which Allison is complaining of a headache and Joe asks if she wants him to check if their doctor can work her in the next day. Allison snaps at him. (Of course we later learn that Allison has a brain tumor so that explains her behavior in this instance). Watching that scene I am reminded of all the other times Allison gets bitchy with Joe over nothing at all; Allison takes offense and plays the victim, and snaps at Joe. Honestly, if I were married to a woman who acted like that I would have to say goodbye to her.
But the writers also have Allison as a very caring and loving mother and wife. She is almost like a multiple personality patient.
I realize that writers need to create drama and inject a lot of emotion into shows in order to involve the audience. But I think they make the Allison character too bitchy, too stupid, etc. as a way to create conflict and drama.

Their daughters are constantly fighting aren't they? WOW. A friend of mine had all girls and he complained that he had lost some of his hearing due to their screams and fights. He was half joking of course, but I can testify that their scraps were ear piercingly loud.

Re: Joe is one of the best TV husbands

Nah. They tried to write him way too perfect.
